    Excellent to hear someone react to Symphony X. I got into them when I was waiting for some more Rush to come out and needed something to fill the void. They offered really great musicianship and interesting lyrics as well. Another really great band in this ilk is Spocks beard. I was into them as well at the same time as Symphony X.

    So little reaction to Symphony X - thanks so much. My introduction to their music was "The Odyssey", and like you, I listened to them ceaselessly for years. There was so little prog metal to enjoy. I too, have since discovered other incredible bands in this genre - try these on for size:
    For it's similar storytelling to "The Odyssey", here is Norway's Circus Maximus -' "Glory of the Empire" : th-cam.com/video/PgJvBfQh_cE/w-d-xo.html
    From semi-rural Pennsylvania, come "Shadow Gallery: "Cliffhanger 1 and 2": th-cam.com/video/N1Zhcwrs1Y4/w-d-xo.html
    From Britain..."Threshold" - "Mission Profile": th-cam.com/video/GaxkZdAEUXU/w-d-xo.html
    Finally, from way back, an epic prog track from "Uriah Heep" - their opus "Salisbury": th-cam.com/video/zau-okpFssg/w-d-xo.html

    Technically and musically... flawless.
    As a fan of Rush who was on the band wagon when it was just a push cart I am not just an old fogy with flowers in my ponytail.
    I used to work a pub at university where the bands were either Punk or Metal (loud?.... musical CPR) and had my fill of the genres (and real bloody idiots). Interesting to hear (actually hear) something that isn't a guy attempting to scream louder than a Rickenbacker though a wall of Marshalls. Still find the level of intensity exhausting, but it may be that at 65, I am a bit old for some "head banging" ....
    Play on young lovers....

    • @NicknLex

      I totally get it. Even for me now that I have been exposed to more 70's prog and more and more classical rock I don't know if I could still listen to an entire album of this kind of intensity myself. Used to listen to Iron maiden and Metallica all day and I can't do it anymore. Thanks for your comment.

    I had wanted to react to the previous Symphony X, but I somehow forgot ... how could this happen. But I remember, what's always on my mind: on the throne of Progressive metal guitarists I have John Petrucci sitting in the middle, at his sides Mikael Romeo and Jim Matheos of Fates Warning, 3 masters ! My personal problem with Symphony X is, that one of their big + (plus) is also a big - (minus) : the strong voice of Russell Allen - he starts singing and you are totally impressed, but if he goes on with full power, I can stand it for max 40 - 50 minutes ( the original LP length), after that it's getting too much for me ... he should have more variety .. but maybe I heard the "wrong" albums of Symphony X. So I'm willing to learn, tell me, if there are CDs, that I should give a try. Other than that, the music is beyond doubt, great progressive metal, great thrashing and everything ... And thank you for giving my advice to your subscribers, whenever you start feeling not well because of the volume at concerts, you better use earplugs, I tried to avoid them as long as possible, but a lack of fun of pure sound is better than lifelong tinnitus, fortunately I stopped at the right time. Ask people who got it, what a pain in the a** it is, it's a loss of life quality .... sorry for preaching, I only want the best for you all :-)

    • @mvunit3
      @mvunit3 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Amen! Jim Matheos (and his often side man "Frank Aresti") is a VERY underrated Guitarist. Hopefully very soon, N&L will get into different era's (and bands) of their music :).

    Who's better than Sir Allen?

  • @mvunit3
    @mvunit3 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    _“Incorrect. I am not an AI. My code name is Project 2501. I am a living, thinking entity that was created in the sea of information.”_
    I'm a sucker for any band/album where the subject is about Technology gone wrong and Robots (Terminator, Matrix, Ai, Ghost in the Shell etc.), which I've collected in 2 Themed Playlists over the years. And of course, a few tracks from this excellent album are featured.
    Though I can remember when this and the previous album were under a bit of scrutiny because there were long time fans that wanted "Sir" Russel Allen to return to his more _melodic_ singing, which he does well. Its funny that his rougher voice was still quite "melodic", where as there are countless vocalists that scream, wale, or do guttural/death metal vocals (yet are in key with the music) comparatively. I like it all, but I understand with Allen because it was so distinctive, but the music gets heavier, so it needed a voice to go with it (I guess the argument about the music getting heavier was also contentious).
    I need to go back to listening to this album as a whole, its been awhile to hear it. Also I need to get more into the earlier albums _before_ "V" (which you guys had reacted to a track). Those albums are very proggy and have a medieval quality about them (the choir-like harmonies of Allen's voice) because of the subject matter.
    Haha another Holdsworth "shot"! Love the artwork of this album as well . . .
    SYMPHONY X founder & lead guitarist Michael Romeo has the following to say about Flanagan’s art:
    "We worked with Warren on the last CD, Paradise Lost, and have a good relationship with him. When I talk to Warren about artwork ideas, a lot of times we end up making comparisons to films and movies. With the new CD, Iconoclast, the music and lyrics have a darker mechanical/technological theme, and I remember us talking about scenes from films like The Matrix and Terminator. From there, we sent him some song titles and lyrics (songs like 'Dehumanized,' 'Bastards Of The Machine,' 'Electric Messiah') and just let Warren run with the ball. He has a great imagination and style, and he totally gets what we are trying to convey with the music."
    All the things I love of high concept art meeting the music as a representation of what's "inside" (like a Book cover). Be sure to see the "2" covers (1 for the regular edition, and the other the Special Edition).
    This is another great track from them, very hooky chorus and pre-chorus, and those great Allen lines where he can emote. Very groovy track (like you Nick, its been awhile to hear this). For Lexi, the "pinch harmonics" are those guitar "squeals" between the heavy riffs at that section that Nick pointed out (the subtle touching of the string to make a "harmonic" twang, between the thumb and pick. Marty Friedman does it alot, as well as Zakk Wylde, and John Sykes/Blue Murder, and many others). Traditional Death Metal players do that often as well.
    You have "Allen/Lande" to checkout (Jorn Lande of Ark), Adrenaline Mob (Allen and Portnoy's Metal band), Ayreon with guest Allan and Michael Romeo, Arjen Lucassen's other _Sci-Fi_ band "Star One", Allen's solo album "Atomic Soul", 3 solo albums by Romeo, Allen with "Avantasia" and guesting in many other projects.
    That was great! Cool to see Lexi getting into the bands we enjoy. Though keep in mind SX is a Prog Metal/U.S. Powermetal band (sometimes seen as a "Symphonic Metal" band), "Metal" is usually associated with Heavy Metal between 1979 thru 1985 (and modern bands of that "style"), and then the "subgenres" started to be born and has grown much from there.
    - Nice surprise to end the night! \m/
    Oh! P.S. . . . I have not figured out Lexi's quote (scratching the goatee of knowledge)! :p
    "Hold me, Machine Messiah
    And show me
    The strength of your singular . . . . eye".
