- A playthrough of Sega's 2004 puzzle game for the Nintendo GameCube, Puyo Pop Fever.
This video shows the entire story mode on the normal difficulty:

Puyo Pop Fever (Or Puyo Puyo Fever, as the game was called in Japan) was second game in the series developed by Sonic Team, preceeded only by Puyo Pop (Minna de Puyo Puyo) on the Game Boy Advance back in 2002. It was originally released as an arcade title for Sega's Naomi hardware, and its 2004 port to the Dreamcast was the final title that Sonic Team worked on for the Dreamcast. It was released on countless other platforms, as well, including the PS2, Xbox, PC, DS, and Game Boy Advance.
The game is fairly similar to the Puyo games developed by Compile themselves. It's still a "battle puzzle" game. You arrange colored blobs into groups of four or more to make them disappear, and each combination sends "nuisance" Puyo to the other player's board. Ideally, you want to drop the Puyos in such a way that you can set off a chain reaction - the more moves that you can chain together and set off in a single move, the more stuff gets flung at your opponent.
The big difference in Puyo Pop Fever, as you can probably tell from the title, is the introduction of the Fever mode. If nuisance Puyo are about to drop onto your side of the field (indicated by the grey blob icons at the top of the board), you can make any combination to cancel some of these out: this is what the game, somewhat unclearly, refers to as "offsetting." Each time you successfully offset part of an incoming attack, you'll fill in one of the circles on the side of your game board. If you fill all of the circles, you enter Fever mode. Fever mode gives you huge preset arrangements that can usually be cleared in one or two moves - if clear several of these in succession, your opponent is going to have a hard time coming back from the onslaught sent their way.
The Fever mechanic changes the dynamic of the game quite a bit, as it allows you to turn the tables at any moment. It also rewards slower, more methodical play. If you're constantly sending over tiny combinations, the opponent will counter them all easily and hit Fever mode without much problem. The strategy, especially in the more challenging battles, then becomes one of balancing massive combos with the opportunities you're providing. Each of the CPU opponents have different strategies, so you have to be extremely careful with how you approach each.
Make no mistake - as easy as the game goes on you in the lower stages, it is a Puyo Puyo game, and as such, it is bloodthirsty. The difficulty level eventually ends up approaching controller-breaking levels near the end - even on the normal difficulty level! But still, if you know and love Puyo games, you're already familiar with this. Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine was a good warm-up, but without some mean Puyo chops, you won't see the ending here. Even if you aren't very good at it, though, Puyo Pop Fever is an extremely fun multiplayer game.
The presentation is probably going to be hit-or-miss depending on your preferences. Personally, I thought the new hyper-cheery anime cutscenes were ugly and the voice acting irritated me to no end, but they are well produced and the new characters are usually pretty funny. In game, it looks really nice. The boards are all done in 3D and feature a few flashy effects when you pull off a big move, and the pieces always stand out, even when everything behind them dissolves into sheer chaos. The music is alright - I didn't like the intro theme at all, but that tune that plays during the first few stages of each course is a true ear worm. It's cheery, almost to a fault, and it's absurdly catchy. Overall, if a video game could be a Fanta soda with Pixy Stix, unicorns, and ADHD mixed in, Puyo Pop Fever would be that game. It's obnoxious, but it does its best to be endearing. Whether or not it succeeded is completely a matter of personal opinion.
Sega did a fantastic job with Puyo Pop Fever - much better than their first shot at the series on the GBA, for sure. And whether or not you appreciate the Anime-on-crack aesthetic, there is more than enough hardcore puzzle gaming here to keep any genre fiend addicted for quite awhile.

Even if you don't appreciate Sega's hyperactive anime face-lift, there's no denying what an addictive (and occasionally rage-inducing) puzzle game it is. Compile might be gone, but Sega did them a solid with their treatment of the franchise.
Can I just say how much I *LOVE* this game!? This is unquestionably one of my favorite puzzle games of all-time. From the cheesy English Voiceovers, the *MUSIC* , the art style, and the *BALANCED DIFFICULTY!* (Take *THAT* Puyo Puyo on Genesis!). Sega, You really outdone yourselves when developing these games after Compile's bankruptcy! Kind of a shame that Europeans got every console release of this game (& the GBA release) and America didn't.😞
POSITIVES
• *Great Graphics* (From Start to Finish, you're blasted with tons of colors that don't burn your retinas.)
• *Great Music* (If there's one thing that Sega's got at, it is composing great tunes in their games. Every song is so catchy and upbeat! Just listen to *THIS!!!* 55:47 )
• *Nice Art Style* (As an anime geek, I really dig the art style this game has. So full of life and well animated!)
• *Nice Voiceovers* (... For the most part. More on that later.)
• *Balanced Difficulty* (The CPUS aren't *NEARLY* as frustrating to beat anymore!)
NEGATIVES
• *Raffine's English Voiceovers* (Good god, she's so obnoxious sounding! I get what they were going for, but *boy* does it wear thin on me!)
• *Camera Swooping Effects* (The camera moves around a lot during Puyo Chains. It's disorienting. The GBA, DS, & PSP versions don't have this (Thank god!)
Final Rating: 9/10
I *urge* you to get your hands on this!
Portable or Console, treat yourselves to some Puyo Puyo Fever!
The Sonic Team Puyo artstyle started pretty rough imo but they definitely perfected it in Puyo 20th Anniversary. It took them 7 years but better late than never.
Now THIS is fun.
You mean by making only very few titles available worldwide? Puyo Puyo Tetris being one of the only ones? I don't consider that good treatment at all especially since we got some of the most lackluster entries in the series.
The English version's voice acting is pretty bad, that's the only complaint I have for this game.
I just remembered this game randomly and got hit with a wave of nostalgia. loved this game as a kid
Yeah, and when I played it after I got it from GameStop, its gameplay was similar to Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (which is a game that is the North American version of the original Puyo Puyo)😲
the art style is *SO* cute!
Sashimi Arceus Agreed. It’s so cheery.
dude this game SO NOSTALGIC!!!!! i remember playing this a bunch at my old home! the music and voice acting are especially nostalgic!
...Man..It's way too cute!! The presentation just screams early 2000's anime, but I gotta credit to that AWESOME upbeat, catchy soundtrack!! Many Puzzler games arguably have some of the most catchiest soundtracks!! One could argue the early 2000's was a horrible time to be alive, right?? XD
why
Ah one of the only Puyo games we got in the states "that actually used the Puyo name". Sad we didn't get another one here until they decided to work Tetris into the mix.
Larry Laffer even Then, that was a puyo puyo game, and better than fever in every way.
@@jballs5434 PPF? That's not a good idea.
Puyo Puyo Champions tho?
*_Puyo Pop Fever_* is where the series starts becoming even more wacky than the original Puyo Puyo games. It's just as fun (and frustrating) as those games.
Dorian Scott the VA is much better in later games. This game make them sound like actors that don't give 2 craps.
But... psp
@@ccateni28 I agree. Raffine in this game sounds so annoying! I'll take Japanese Raffine, any day!
This game is not anime
@@Dorian_Scott She sounds better in Puyo Puyo Tetris, IMO
This dubbing feels like a 4Kids anime, except when Raffina drops the D bomb
its actually kinda sad that us westerners didn’t get a localized puyo game until like 2018 bc this game sold poorly in the states
damn?
??? didn't expect that lol
the English voice acting is good, and it had mostly unknown VAs working on it too. It's just something I've never heard before

Salde can be weird, huh?
Bro this game be using bad language 😭
50:34 - Mz. Accord attacks in music references:
Largo, Giocoso, Andante, Allegro, Suavey, Presto, Da Capo, Fermata, Rondo!
As the combos get bigger, the music tempo style get faster.
- Largo(very slow tempo music) - Adante(still slow but faster than Largo)
- Allegro(lively brisk paced music) - Presto(quick tempo fast pace)
- Suavey(Gracefully bridging different paces of music)
- Rondo (bringing together music scores into one good sounding form)
(Accord - Sounds that go together to form a musical composition)
Accord: It's another magical morning.
Me: Say what you want, it's MONDAY.

We've gotta get that damn E rating somehow! 😉
Goodnight, everybody! 😘
Wut?
The first fever is alright but its kinda there for the most part. I do prefer the sequel for having more modes and generally having much more to do aftering completting the story mode. Not to mention a much better art style.
The art style in Fever 1 is ok, but it's generally unrefined in comparison to the improvements that Fever 2 made and completely reworked in 20th anniversary and beyond.
The localization is definitely 2000s at it's core. "Howdy-doo, I'm Ar-Lee."
Overall, it's interesting to look back on for the first time Sega and Sonic Team rebooted the series for the modern era. The puyos being 3d and having a camera effect which is exclusive to the console versions except the Dreamcast version. The different art style in comparison to the rest of Sega's Puyo games. The appearances of Arle and Carbuncle and how generally they're unimportant to the game's plot, and the fact that Popoi is just evil for some reason.
It's a very strange game but it's interesting to look back on.
The sequel is definitely better if you want the classic fever experience. It's a shame that we didn't get any of the future games until Puyo Puyo Tetris came out. But this was a decent introduction to the Puyo series that didn't really take off outside of Japan much due to Sega's lackluster efforts to advertise Fever.
I really want to play Puyo Puyo Fever 2. I really wish it had gotten a worldwide release...
Both games have similar art direction. *VERY* similar, but worse looking. I also think that the second game is a *slight* improvement over the first one. It's still a good sequel, but other than the added content, its core gameplay is pretty much the same.
Now, I will say that the English voiceovers in the first one aren't very good
( *_"Howdy do, I'm Ar-lee!"_* [😒 ugh... ] )
( *_"Good luck dancing without any LEGS"_* [😒 *ugh* ... ] )
( *_"Exactly! Precisely! Frim! Don't You Know! WHAT A BREEZE!"_* [😒 *UGGH, Now they are stuck in my head!* ] )
( *_"Hey! Which way are you looking!? I bet you don't even know why you crossed the road!"_* [😒 *Okay, that's as far as I can go with this!* ] )
( Anything from _Popoi_ [😣 Unintelligible Screaming] )
But it's the _"so bad, it's good"_ variety of terrible voiceovers. You can enjoy them, despite them not being the greatest... For the most part.
At least the art direction, music, and fun gameplay are enough keep you engaged.
Overall, *both* are fine if you want to have the fun experience these games have.
dont get fever 2 if u are afraid of weird damage sprites but if u want the best fever music get it
Accord: To get to fever mode, you must offset each other
People who got introduced to puyo in fever due to it being one of very few localized releases: oh OK... Wait what?

Go to 10:28 10:44 and 23:55 for all of Amitie’s “Get real” dialogue
Plot twist: Amitie is Ryuji Sakamoto's sister
I love her😅
you forgot 14:46
Get really real! I already seen the "Get real" dialogues
18:55 ARLEE.
HOW DO YOU #\'( THIS UP!?!?!?
It's how Dark Prince pronounces her name.
How do you get so angry over a nitpick?
Am i the only one who literaly had this on a mp3 player?
This game was on everything back on the day
Get really real! Now you've pissed me off!
B.t.w. the V.A. and cutscenes may suck, but ether play the Japanese version or the later games like 15th and 20th anniversary along with 7 and if you only want English, puyo puyo tetris. They improve the game by a ton and have better V.A. and cutscenes. Trust me, I know as a puyo puyo fan.
You must REALLY hate this game do you?
@@impelledcinnamon5736 for real. I love these cheesy little cutscenes!
🤓
Ahh so this is where that hat came from for sonic Forces extra mode, very cute game

Fun, that's what.
Popoi's theme fucking slaps
I love the fever art style so much, so bad that fever 2 wasn't localized
Amitie’s Puyo Cap makes her look like a Mario Mushroom.
my childhood holyyyyy
Best game ever
I'm sure I'll offend someone by saying this but this reminds me of dr mario
Dr mario but with gravity lol
@@malikmalikmalikmalikma And horizontal pops
It looks even more similar in the old rules because you only get 2 puyos per turn
Dr. Mario, but with a character select screen. ( And gravity of course! )
Well taisen3 (Arles Theme) is forever stuck in my head (thanks vs mode) but I did use it in Puyovs2 myself. It's catchy!

This reminds me of Battle Balls (Senkyu in Japan).
Gives me “Super Milk Chan” vibes… but this one’s actually good.

Why does the Game Boy Advance version not have voice acting in cutscenes? Now I'm gonna have to spend actual money on this game instead of emulating it.
The cartridge didn't have room for the voices. You could emulate the GameCube, PS2, DS, or PSP version. They all have voices.
you don't even need to emulate, there's a pc port

Kinda has that *Panty and Stocking* beat to it. I dunno, maybe the bright colors. I still prefer the 16-bit Puyo Puyos, sorry.
Ugh. I agree, these characters are dumb and annoying. Make no bones about it (little blobs don't have bones, ha ha), this is Japan in its 2000's tastes and stages. Still better than the fanservice-laden shit we get today, though.
The Real Sean W. Stewart, I Saw That Series, Pretty Good Time!
I Kinda Prefer The Treatment That *Sega* Gave to The *Puyo Puyo* Series.
The 16-Bit Games DO Look Good Too, But, *Sega* Gave This Series a Much Needed Makeover.
I Prefer The Anime Art Direction HERE Than The Old Games, (Amitie Is So Cute!!!😍).
