    When they opened with Echoes in Philly in 1987 I actually teared up. I had seen them in 1977 but all they played was all of Animals and all of Wish You Were Here with a Dark Side encore. Nothing older. This is my favorite concert film of all time too!

    As I read somewhere, the reason why only Nick Mason is shown on One of these Days is because the other recording tapes were lost.

      @2v_5r I used to think that the the song was called Wots Uh the Devil. Everyone used to tell me Pink Floyd were Hardcore Satanists. I couldn't find many of their albums in record stores, I've only had heard the Wots song once, never seen the actual album at that point. This was before someone could research the complete archive of recorded music on the internet so I sometimes would have friends give me mixed tapes and just go by what they told me about the songs. Even now if you get 1 incorrect word when trying to search for a particular song the web is stupefied. It's much easier than it was trying to use the primitive record store computers though

    I’m so glad you covered this film in your series. I hadn’t listened to it for a long while but threw it on a month or so ago while…. Let’s just say I experienced it with a different mindset and was just blown away….I mean texting some of my musician friends and begging them to give it another listen…I even promised to provide some fun guys. I’ve heard so often from people that Floyd was a studio band and didn’t have the greatest live “chops”….needing to bring in other backup musicians to perform their music live….. I beg to differ…. I agree that these are the definitive versions of these pieces. One thing you got wrong though…there was an audience….a couple of teens snuck into the amphitheater and got to see some of this show…imagine having that experience. It is extremely difficult to find the music on streaming services and all I’ve found is Echoes on Apple Music…it needs to be put out in it’s entirety for nerds like myself. Ok. Now I’m going to watch the rest of your review. Mine is that this is a masterpiece of music and one of my favorite releases by the band. Cheers!!

    I think this concert is what convinced me to finally give Pink Floyd a chance. It's definitely on the list of my favorite performances now. Also, another person pointed it out, but the reason they only have shots of Nick in some parts is because they lost the footage of the other guys.

    • @JTCurtisMusic
      @JTCurtisMusic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, here's where I have to pull back on this a bit - I don't think they actually had footage of the other guys - though I wasn't there so I can't be sure. To the best of my research, it's a four camera shoot and three cameras are on Nick, and there seems to be a forth one behind the console. So where would these other shots have come from unless they moved them around for different takes? There was some communication error and each cameraman focused on Nick thinking the others were getting the other band members - or they just thought this would be a far out way to film him.

    • @biancachristie
      @biancachristie ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JTCurtisMusic There was some lost film. I need to find the source for this, but there's a reason so many of us seem to know about it. Also, the Director's Cut fixes some of the problems with all that focusing on nick, nick, and nick (much as we love him), and also gets the pitch problems sorted out. Just search for the it on YT because someone always uploads it if the copyright people take it down. Gotta love the PF Army

    I had 'Live At Pompeii' on VHS in the '80s.
    I lost it long ago and replaced it with the DVD.
    The original concert film is incredible, but the "reworking" by the director with all the CGI planets and space shit totally destroy the whole concept of filming in Pompeii in the first place!!!

    I think the ideal version of the film is the original cut, but without "Mademoiselle Nobs". To me, that captures a vibe that the added videos, from the CGI to the Dark Side footage, detract from. I don't mind the dated effects and the band performing in front of rear-projection. They feel honest.
    However, I do like the Dark Side footage, and I edited it together (along with "Mademoiselle Nobs") to be its own thing.

  • @floydianepic3259
    @floydianepic3259 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Great Reaction Champ. Saucerful my favourite from this one. And definitely the definitive version. I don't actually mind the directors cut. Yeap CGI is dated. But there is some great footage of let's say modern day volcanic catastrophes that come across really well and add visual emotion to the music. I like the intro and outros which were meant to represent aliens coming to earth after hearing this music to find out what was going on then leaving once the show was done. Well that's what I heard anyway. 🙃 Yes kind of corny but is that a bad thing.
    Now time for that little hidden gem called Obscured by Clouds. Only overlooked by many because it is a Soundtrack. What a shame.

    Glad you did this cos it did get released as an album of sorts.
    I actually went to Pompeii with my parents in my early teens and up Vesuvius for a day trip back in 1980 but back then all I knew of Floyd was the hit single 'Another Brick in the Wall'. I was a punk and a Sex Pistols and PiL fan but to this day I'm convinced but unsure I saw a plaque somewhere that said Pink Floyd played here in 1972? And it named the band members which meant nothing to me. Then around 1982-83 as everyone around me started smoking pot Pink Floyd was the band that everyone listened to. All my mates watched The Wall movie & DSOTM etc.
    Then one day a gang of us went to a mates house and he was watching 'Live in Pompeii' on his own.
    I remember one guy asking him what's it like? And he replied it's crap.
    While everyone was talking I couldn't take my eyes off it and the music clicked with me instantly.
    Out of every guy in that room I was the only one who thought it was brilliant. Experimental.
    Since then I've got an original old VHS and the dvd with added features.
    I agree Echoes works better on Pompeii ( my mate hates what he calls the jazzy lead guitar section. jazz??) That's the highlight of the song.
    Careful with that axe is amazing.
    It's all great .
    My favourite live gig.
    I see fans of later Pink Floyd music as closet Dire Straits fans.
    I much prefer the Early Years box set from 67- 72.

    I would be hard pressed to choose between this version of Echoes and the final live performance that David & Rick did in 2006 before Rick passed away. Pompeii was amazing, but there is something so beautiful & bittersweet in the 2006 performance--especially at the end, as the two musicians seem to carry on an intimate conversation, between two old friends, spoken only by the notes of the instruments played. It's hard not to tear up.

    Love this film. My fave version is the one I had on VHS way back when. No CGI or black and white interview segments. It was the Pompeii footage and Dark Side sessions only. The flow of that cut was pitch perfect and it was actually a little jarring watching the Director's Cut for the first time. I enjoy the Pompeii performance-only version such as it is, but still feel like I'm missing that little extra magic from the Dark Side footage. It's a shame that particular version isn't included on the disc. I'd have liked a bump up to 5.1, as well, but the 2 channel stereo track still packs a wallop.

    By far my favorite 'documented history' of Pink Floyd, before the egos and bitterness destroyed the band (by two of the members). They all look like they get along, famously, and it warms my heart, knowing they were once that way - a cohesive unit. That is when their music was best - where they each played their respective parts which, alone are craftsmanship that is something to behold, but together? Pure magic!
    Careful With That Axe, Eugene is my favorite piece, showing the band as in-sync as ever, especially Roger on the bass (indeed, throughout each piece), particularly where we have reports that Dave played bass on many later tracks because they were too hard for Roger to play (?????). This shows that Roger is a master of the bass, as are all four masters of their own instruments.
    A great, great band, that, much like Vesuvius erupted, made their mark on the entire world, and left behind a wake of music that covers us all, still; but ended, all too soon. Could you imagine what they all could have accomplished had the rest of the band not allowed Roger's ego to run over them?
    Still my favorite band of all time...
    I am enjoying all your videos, keep up the great work!

    If not for "Echoes," this live concert for no one might have been a career disaster. Not that the other performances weren't good, it's just that Adrian Maben's vision is fulfilled with that song performed before an audience of ghosts. It's almost as if Floyd is reaching back in time and ancient Pompeii is reaching forward.

    Puzzling as to why there isn’t more professional live footage from 1972 to The Wall (and The Wall concert footage isn’t great-no Richard Wright and the band is falling apart)
    Good early live performances on the 1970 San Fran KQED and the French church performance of Cymbeline is fantastic.

    Haven't read all of the comments but they weren't actually in the studio making DSOTM. It was already finished and the director just encouraged them to act as they they were still working on it. Quite the let-down after all these years.

      I'm not entirely sure that's true. I think certainly a good chunk of the album was done, but they might have still been putting the finishing touches on a few tracks, like Dave's guitar on Brain Damage. I haven't gotten complete confirmation about this yet though. If you have a source, do share.

    I have the songs in 5.1 from the early years, but hope someday that they released the movie on Blu-ray or 4K with the original Quadraphonic soundtrack. It’s one of my favorite concert movies also..

    RW has maybe the most blood curdling scream in humanity, Echoes is maybe now of the greatest songs ever written. I've been watching this since 1985 when our local movie rental shop had it on VHS.

    I really think that those who discovered Pink Floyd from Animals or later and rubbish their earlier work, really need to sit down and watch Live at Pompeii while checking out what else was out there in 1971 and 1972.
    At their very peak they were well ahead from the rest, and you realise that they didn’t just ride the wave of the hi fi revolution back then, they made the waves! I would also would hope this film would show them that Pink Floyd are a lot more than just Roger Waters.

    The director's cut is dreadful. As soon as I saw those CGI effects of Pompeii being buried under the lava I thought, directors should be forbidden to tinker with a film. I bought the Obfuscation box set with the misunderstanding that the concert film would be included on the blu-ray disc. It turned out that it was only the musical performances. I had sold my DVD copy many years prior and was hoping to own the film again. At least it had the soundtrack, which sounds amazing. The studio footage, regardless of its historical importance as a document to the recording of Dark Side of the Moon, it ruins the overall dreamlike quality. Thankfully I burned a copy of the VHS I owned onto DVD. Not the best quality but it lacks the unnecessary footage.

      @@JTCurtisMusic So old and it still works turntables are the best,and I have a question I have a turntable without counterweight and it matters a lot if you have it? I have heard it will scratch the record and does not sound as good as the counterweight.I listen to the live at the roundhouse album from Nick Mason saucerful of secrets and sounds very good with some little buzzing but not annoying.

    Se sabe que P.U.L.S.E y Delicate Sound of Thunder son los mejores recitales de Floyd, por su sonido y en especial por la belleza de la cinematografia, excelentes tomas, calidad de imagen y post produccion.. pero jamas dejare de decir que Live at Pompeii (en mi opinion) es el mejor registro en vivo de una banda de rock en toda la historia.. es una maravilla de la naturaleza.. el sonido, la imagen, la filmacion, ese anfiteatro vacio y lleno de misticismo, ademas las versiones de las canciones superaron por millas a las versiones originales. suena tan especial este concierto que admirar la belleza del sonido analogico/cuadrofonico y la realizacion de las secuencias en los videos lo hacen un documento historico para todas las generaciones posteriores.. LIVE AT POMPEII ES UN REGALO CELESTIAL...
