    Sounds like, with the no sleep thing, Thri-Kreen would get along with Warforged quite well.
    T.K.:”The soft ones are doing that “sleep” thing again.”
    W.f.:”Time to do some equipment maintenance then.”

    I'm playing a thri-kreen in a dark sun game! Any time he refers to a party member he calls them food. He also considered healing to be a form of food preservative and openly says so. He doesn't want to eat the party but maintains that they are all edible lol

    Actually, as far as insects being able to camouflage themselves, some insects like certain walking sticks or beetles are able to change their color to blend into their environment without them having to attach things from the environment to their bodies.

    As a long-time fan of the thri-kreen, I was pretty irritated when 5e decided to completely remove their ability to speak. Their language and mannerisms when speaking were some of the most interesting things about thri-kreen back in the old Dark Sun book they released, Thri-Kreen of Athas. It just doesn't make much sense to have removed their ability to speak, anyway, when you look at the finer details they ignored entirely when making that decision. If this is now retconned to be a race that no longer communicates verbally, why would their weapons still have names? Especially names that are distinctly exotic and nonhuman, as opposed to renaming them to something given by other humanoids that frequently encounter them? Who calls them the thri-kreen if they cannot name themselves? I mean, sure, one could simply continue using them as they were in older editions and just use the new stats, but that doesn't change the fact that their treatment moving into the new edition was honestly kind of lazy and does them a disservice by just throwing away large swaths of what makes them so fascinating.

      Thank you! I saw that somewhere about them not being able to speak, and I was like it wasn’t always like this was it? Glad to know my memory was right. They should be able to talk.

    Just started playing a Thri-Kreen monk in 3.5. This video has been tremendously helpful. There's so little information on them in the 3.5 books, and I felt like there just had to be more. Dark Sun is such a cool setting I know so little about. It's hard to track down any books from it these days. At least not without spending an arm and a leg.
    Gonna incorporate a lot of this info into my rp. Great stuff! Thank you for the video.

    I've played a couple of OP Thri-Kreen characters!
    Tkcha - a 12th level Monk from the 1st edition AD&D Oriental adventures.
    13 hand to hand attacks every 2 rounds and 2 extra dice damage per attack
    Preen - 15th level gunpowder obsessed Thief from the 2nd edition AD&D Spelljammer realm.
    She liked to surprise opponents by shooting 4 star-wheel pistols into their back from point blank.

    • @nvfury13
      @nvfury13 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      nucleardubs I had a few notable Thri-Kreen:
      Kle’klkik, a Wizard that used almost exclusively insect/arachnid based spells, many of which he researched himself, though he had no problem wielding multiple wands of other types of spells.
      Chrechre, a Fighter with an obsession with crystal weapons and items (“They shine such pretty stories!” nobody ever got what he meant...other than an odd drug addicted Thri-Kreen that became his “Butler” to care for his crystal collection), his prized possession was a mysterious crystal pyramid that flashed with internal lights...that nobody ever discovered the secret I had for it.
      Rrrk’tk, a Thri-Kreen Bard that used a pair of strange instruments I made up for Thri-Kreen in that world, called “bug fiddles” (because nobody but insectal races could pronounce the name) they were actually living things, specially bred cricket-like creatures that would continue making a tune once you’d spent some time moving their odd “song legs” (an extra set of limbs extending from just behind their heads) across their multiple wings in a particular tune.

    I had a Thri-keen character called Kal'thrik that had a bad habit of hunting and then eating the druid's or ranger's animal companion in his group.. THough at one point the same Thri-keen had lost his secondary arms, and thru working in a steam-punk world obtained a pair of clockwork mantis-like scythe arms he could use, and oh yeah he quite enjoy researching an studying the habit of the group to spend hours sleeping. Commonly he would leave behind a manual/diary of all of his experiences that would be given to clutches of Thri-keen seeking his reincarnation, but later he began to wonder if what he an his people were doing was a bit of a self fulfilling prophecy.

    After they hatch Thri-Kreen leave their young to fend for themselves in the wilderness. They band together like those kids in _Beyond Thunderdome_ and only about 1/10 make it to adulthood. That's one of the reasons they form such close bonds with their surviving clutch mates.
    It's sad, but also metal as fuck. They don't give two squirts about your character's tragic childhood. It just sounds like a regular upbringing to them. Get over it already!

    In my game, ankhegs are larval thri-kreen. However, they only pupate under the right conditions - a warm and dry environment. Otherwise they remain ankhegs, and can even breed as such. Makes for interesting stories related to climate change...

      ...

    crab spiders have the ability to change the colour of their carapaces between white and yellow to match the colour of the flower they're hiding on, so in a fantasy setting where there's creatures that breathe fire, it seems pretty feasible that chameleon carapace could involve the thri kreen in question's exoskeleton changing its colour and texture.

    No sleep is weird. Insects sleep.
    by most accounts, the answer is yes, insects do sleep. Insects clearly rest at times and are aroused only by strong stimuli: the heat of day, the darkness of night, or perhaps a sudden attack by a predator. This state of deep rest is called torpor and is the closest behavior to true sleep that bugs exhibit.

    I'm an ancient gamer. Thri-Kreen existed in AD&D games before the Dark Sun world existed. They were just called "Mantis Warriors" and were nowhere near being a playable race, they were just intelligent monsters. I could be wrong. My party had an allied Mantis Warrior monster. I was a player, the Mantis Warrior was an NPC party member, I was 14, so it was 1986. Did Dark Sun exist in 1986? It was AD&D, original edition.

      absolutely! They have no restrictions one what class they can be as player characters, and as Thri Kreen are very much focused on bonds of service and loyalty, they make excellent Warlocks. I would say any Thri Kreen that is all alone, having lost it's clan/family/clutch and finds a means to bond with a greater power, will do so, as much out of it's desire to belong, as well as the lure of personal power.

      +AJ Pickett (The Mighty Gluestick) is there a way to tame and use one as a companion creature?

    • @AJPickett
      @AJPickett  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That is a tricky question, by the lore, the current Displacer beasts are those which grew to become too intelligent and bloodthirsty to be controlled by the Unseelie Court, however, they are not particularly resistant to any kind of magic, and any spell effect that would bind an animal as a companion, servant or pet, also works on a Displacer Beast. They have a Lawful Evil alignment, which means they tend to abide by pacts and rules, for example, if they get a steady supply of victims to 'play' with, they will understand that they are obligated to provide a service in exchange, and can be relied on to not bite the hand that feeds them, as long as that agreement is strictly adhered to, and very much in their favor. They are not particularly complex thinkers, and seethe with predatory instinct, so, if anything 'sets them off' they will react and strike to kill, even if under the influence of a charming enchantment, if you shriek and run from a Displacer Beast, even if it considers you a friend.. it will chase and savage you, it just can't help it, that behavior is hard wired into them. To someone who doesn't mind that their 'pet' is prone to tearing faces off on a regular basis, then sure, it is a great option and certainly adds a ton of villainous street cred.. you do not mess with someone with a Displacer Beast companion! However, they are going to leave a trail of bodies in their wake, and sooner or later, that Beast is probably going to turn on them.. just like those videos of people with pet big cats and bears, you just know that things are going to end badly one day. One important thing with the whole pet/master dynamic.. you can not blackmail, torture, threaten or intimidate a Displacer Beast into service.. it WILL turn on you and fight to the death. They serve only their own interests and instincts, so, learn what motivates them, and offer a mutually beneficial arrangement. (and good luck)

    • @gnolly8222
      @gnolly8222 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +AJ Pickett (The Mighty Gluestick) thanks my friend , I was just imagining a quest involving the purifying of the 'Were' curse and adding the blood of a Displacer Beast to make a were-displacer, a were with the power to changer form as well as displace itself. Very tricky in crowds as the were has the power available to it in any form, would be really fun to fight.

    Why are you showing so many images of Killiks from Star Wars?

      -5 yard penalty for disingenuous question with obvious answer, just to self aggrandise your knowledge of another fantasy franchise, hand over the ball and +10 points to Ravenclaw house.

    Such a loud intro, with such a low mumble of a video. Its been like this for all the videos Ive watched from you so far, so its always fun to have to adjust the volume during each and every video.

    Honestly because everything in the dark sun setting is so infused with psionics I bet they actually do reincarnate when one of them dies I bet their Consciousness their soul their energy whatever you want to call it transfers to a new body Dark Sun is a sealed world after all that Soul has to go somewhere so it would actually make sense holy should I just had a brilliant idea the Paragon template from 3rd Edition applied to one of these with 10 or 15 levels of psionics and 5 to 10 of psychic Warrior with the argument being that they are like a demigod or a power the reason being is that they didn't forget their past lives and every time they die they get reincarnated with more knowledge more power

      At one time the souls of Dark Sun folks went to a place called “the Grey” where they just sort of suffered without any memory of who they were in life. The exception being the dwarves who failed in their purpose and became monsters.
      That said some sort of reincarnation “tech” does seem like something folks on Athas might be looking into if possible. It raises issues about making it possibly easy to “undefile” the land if you are making a way to channel these life energies around.
