OK OK I admit it!!! I fell in love with Nena when this song was released in 1983. I was 16 years old. I would sit around watching MTV just waiting for them to play the video. Eventually, I recorded it on VHS and watched it over and over and over. Great song! Great video! Beautiful girl!

Это прямо мистика - у Нины была футболка с её фото на котором она похожа на Цоя (это и обложка одного из первых её альбомов) и песня под названием Кино. А немного позднее появился на эстраде и сам Цой и группа Кино. Вот как тут не верить в высшие силы... ))

Nena is an amazing band - a rarity in the world of music for a live performance and clips to be cooler than a studio recording.
As an American in the USAF stationed at Bitburg AB from 80-83, during the tensions and buildup of NATO vs Warsaw Pact, and the immediate expectation of hostilities between the West and USSR. This song held a very significant meaning in that day, and these forty some years later it is still as relevant to me.
Many friends and family, times and experiences just a second away, and a lifetime away, all at once. In slow motion and then here and gone in an instant.
May Nena (Gabriele) have a long and fulfilling life of her own delight.

Autotune was “invented” in 1998
The sound was highly engineered in the studio. This "live" performance was a lip sync to the studio recording. They were not playing here.

You should have been there in the 60's! That was when we had it all! Although, I will give the 80s a strong second place. Maybe even a tie. Both were fantastic times. Today..... it's all gone down the drain.
This is the one song I personally know of that sounded just as good in both languages even when it 1st came out, I'm only speaking from the perspective of someone who only speaks English. I always thought that was so amazing.

I remember this being on the radio here in Australia. Well the radio stations all played the english version "99 Red Balloons" while us kids all bought the German version to blast out on our hifi's on the weekends.

I was a young soldier stationed in northern Germany 85 to 87 I remember the song still being popular then, I have always preferred the German version, this song really framed he 80s back then, like today very uncertain times. We were in the middle of the Cold War with Russia.
YEP, I was stationed in South Korea for all of 1985 in the Army Infantry. I bought a tape that teaches English to German just to learn what the lyrics were in English.

cant beleive i was on my pre-teen when i first heard this and loved it, im in my late 50s now and still cant forget the joys this song gave me back then and up to now,
It is amazing how indifferent the German public met this brilliant song. I was a teenager in the USSR at those times, and even we - Soviet pioneers - were delighted with Nena. (It was later that our younger sisters became Modern Talking fans.)

@@JustPlainSteve5372 I'm pretty sure the band was playback but the vocals were live. If you listen closely at the end there are plosives on the mic that wouldn't have made it to tape in the studio version

It is amazing how enchanting Nena was and still is.. Doesn't matter what age, everybody loves her voice and all the men fall in love with her. I certainly did, 20 years ago, when i was 20 myself. That was already almost 20! years after they stormed the charts with this and other great songs. And now, another 20 years later, i listen to her singing again and realise i am still in love... ❤
I'm actually quite shocked researching this song as it was a fave when I was a teenager. Someone here wrote that this performance was March of 1983. That was the month the song was released. It seems like the audience isn't going crazy so likely they had just heard it for the first time. The reason I am so surprised is that the German version reached #2 a year later in March 1984 on Billboard in America! 😳 I always thought of it as a cult hit but not so widespread and also the fact that it didn't chart in the USA in English! (I'm a nerd about this kind of thing 🤓.) I remember hearing the American version on the radio too.
It's always intrigued me that the German version was a no 2 hit in the US while here in the UK it was the English version that got to number 1.

I listened to the English version and although they are different in meaning than the German--so what? There was that song "Der Komissar" in both German and English around the same time as well. Strange trend...🤣

Там Нена так всех к концу завела что и зал и сама группа прыгают от радости и именно то что называется ловят кайф от музыки.
Это настоящий панк-рок а самом чистом виде. Учитывая то что Нена поёт на немецком и концерты всегда проводятся сложнее чем работа в студии это вообще нечто фантастическое.)))

First time I heard this song while I was station in England 1982. I fell in love with it, heard it in English, then later in German. I like the German version I don' t understand it. still love the way it sounds. Nena has a lovely voice when she sing. Listen to her other music. don't understand it. it fun to listen to it.

This looks like the West German equivalent of the Ed Sullivan Show--a general audience with a broad range of ages in the audience, from youngsters to grandma. No wonder they had no idea what an amazing gem was performing before them. Nena just slays it in a live performance. She's completely at ease, no fear, having fun with an upbeat tune with dark lyrics. The entire band is incredibly hip. Doesn't get much more German and 1980's than that.

I was fifteen at the time, and watched it at home on Funen in Denmark, where, in addition to the one Danish channel Danmarks Radio, we could watch German television. Also saw Dali Dali and other shows from West Germany. Wow thanks 🙏 for showing that.

I went into basic train in November of 1983 Ft Leonard Wood Missouri… by late February 84 during the end of AIT the Drill Sargents were allowing MTV on the weekends. Nina’s 99 red balloon was played regularly. Then I went to Germany in March. Man she was the rage. Very memorable.

Basic Training Ft Leonard Wood December 1985-March 1986. Cold as f**k, bivouac was 15°, no music or anything else for three months. Was so glad when it was over.

Gabriele Susanne Kerner acquired her nickname “Nena” while on a vacation to Mallorca, Spain, with her parents. Nena is a Spanish word meaning "girl". In 1977, she left high school before graduation, and in the three following years she was trained as a goldsmith.
I was in the Army and stationed at the rock when she came out with this, Went to one of her shows and she signed a picture for me, LOL I had a major crush on her back in the day.
