    Come on Bryan, just listen to the Odyssey to the West already ;)
    Just came from the Pink Floyd video and had the left and right panning comment- really love the different melodies playing in each ear with the “main” one playing underneath both.
    These guys are brilliant. That’s all I gotta say. Stoked for new stuff whenever they release it.

    The crazy part about this new single is that its a live performance recording from the Techfest at home 2020 event. Ill be flying from the US to see them live next year in the UK. they are my favorite band of all time so seeing you react to them again is fantastic.

      You'll love TechFest mate, I've been a few times and watched Slice the Cake too. Met some great people there and they'll definitely make you feel welcome, it's only a small fest but that's the beauty of it feels like one big family. Hope you have a great time 🤘

    Fun fact they broke up after odyssey to the west and homecoming is there first track being back is supposed to be a continuation from odyssey to west.

    After the last Slice the Cake tracks I downloaded their discography. Haven't gotten to them yet, but they're high on my priority list. I really enjoyed this as well, which is becoming my typical reaction to StK. This does a great job at combining their beauty/brutality elements and the track develops in a lot of interesting directions. I especially love how the first aggressive section transitions into that quasi-jazz soft section with the two guitars playing a mix of contrapuntal leads and leads with some nice chordal comping, with the drumming morphing into a cool, syncopated style. Good job transitioning back into the harshness too with such nice melodic work underlying it all. Just another rock solid track.

    I have been obsessed with this song since I first heard it a bit back. Pretty close to a perfect musical style for my tastes! Also, I would definitely agree with the "blackened" comment. I found this one to have a much more black metal leaning sound rather than the more "deathy" sounds of their previous stuff.

  • @Panda_SMM
    @Panda_SMM 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    beauty within the brutality. exactly why I love progressive metal music. the contrast with that is something I've always found in different mediums, that I always just love.

      @@CriticalReactions I would absolutely go nuts if you did Odyssey as an album reaction. Regardless of whether or not you do it on camera, you have to listen to the album in full. It's is an incredible journey. It's very heavy and very brutal pretty much the entire way through but it's phenomenal.

  • @ambassadortourettes753

    This band is what I thought The Contortionist would have evolved into until they dropped off the heavier aspects... This band definitely has that great mix of styles whilst retaining that brutality that is needed in my opinion 👌

    Sorry if this is weird, but I was doing some Slice the Cake binging and just thought I would inform you that the composer for STC has passed. He created some great fuckin music. Listening to his stuff in his honor. You really ought to give Odyssey to the West a listen if you haven't.

    • @CriticalReactions

      Dude, that sucks! Thanks for letting me know since I hadn't heard about that. Looks like he passed from cancer back in May. I feel weird doing this but since you brought it up I have a full 5 hour video dedicated to analyzing the Odyssey to the West album. I might end up checking out the recently released remaster in honor of him too. th-cam.com/video/HaJH_kScOwM/w-d-xo.html

    "Brutality" might be a more fitting word for this - when "agression" doesn't really work(?)
    Anyways, this is just a great mash-up of brutality and beautiful melodic lines. I do find beauty in many a straight up brutal song with something sensitive and/or melancholic in the tonality (doesn't have to be "melody" for me). But this way of intertwining brutal and chaotic textures with the beautiful, more harmonious elements is just so refreshingly satisfying! Totally enjoyed it - ready and willing to slice me some more pieces of this enthralling cake!

    • @CriticalReactions
      @CriticalReactions  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! Brutality. I've used it in the past but it was simply slipping my mind. Love that final metaphor :)

       @Critical Reactions the word harshness came to my mind when you said you were unsure of the word. i don't really associate black metal with brutality

    • @progperljungman8218
      @progperljungman8218 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@justaguy2567 I do agree for some kinds of bm. I don't really percieve this as bm though. Just some bm techniques in the mix - not coming off as bm to me. Brutality is not the vital ingredient in bm - I'd rather say it's "desperate gloom" or something. Harshness is a better word than brutality to describe much from the bm-scene though.
