  • Will the Line 6 Helix HX Effects make snobs like me get over myself and get into some digital multi-effects? If you usually consider yourself to be a 'traditionalist' like me, but you're looking for more convenience, something like the HX still might seem enticing. So I'm going to find out for myself, and for you, if people like us can get into a unit like this.
    This video is not sponsored, all the gear was bought by myself with my own money, so all opinions expressed are mine and mine only.
    I got this HX Effects as a B-stock from Music Store Cologne for a good price, check it out yourself if you'd like to find one without breaking the bank!

    I love my HX FX. I've gigged it pretty solidly for around 4 years, and its never let me down. It takes care of all my delays, verbs, phasers, choruses, etc. And it can integrate with you own pedals, really easily. It's also, really easy to use and learn.

      I have to admit I was surprised how easy it was. The only issue I have is that the FX loop doesn't take drive or fuzz well and I think the tuner is a bit finicky. Besides that I've happily used it on acoustic and electric shows since I shot this video. It has also become the main pedalboard for my channel, at least for most videos.

    Awesome video and awesome channel! Been following since the Dr. Z video; may have bought a Maz 38 after that. Kind of wanted to get into the HX Effects seems solid based off the video and this is helpful because you and I run a very similar board and go for similar tones. Hard to tell if it’ll have the same feel but I think a fuzz and OD in front like you have would help that a lot! Thanks you the solid content!

      Thanks for watching and for your comment! I started making a lot of these videos as I was missing what I was looking for myself, hoping it would help others find themselves in the same boat as well. Glad to hear that's the case and that these videos prove to be useful to others 🙂
      I've shot this video about two months back and kept this HX Effects. Putting overdrive or fuzz in the loop didn't really work for me, the feel and everything changed way too much, in some cases even useless. Putting them in front is no problem though. But besides that, this thing is really handy. I've made different presets: a backup for my main pedalboard but also my bass pedalboard, and one for acoustic shows. I have used it live the most for the latter so far, and that has worked out great.

    Cool video. Like your raw playing, a bit like myself. Just got an hxfx and i think it’s great. I also run a tumnus and mini carbon copy in a loop to kick on for solos.
    I noticed your phaser sounded better analog, no surprise. I might run my phase 95 mini in the loop as well.
    Try the seeker! Very cool filter effect, ala john frusciante “throw away your television “

      Thanks, I'll check that out! I recently found a drive and fuzz to run in front of the Helix, which I'll post videos about soon. But running drives or fuzzes in the effects loop really didn't work for me. You didn't have any troubles with the loop?

      @@StevenAnthonyGuitar I did when I had the loops in the wrong order... but once I realized that, it was great. The thing is pretty top quality, so a decent chance that any issues are "user error". Check global settings and that the loops are instrument level (not line level). And go to signal chain and get comfortable there, so you have things in the optimal order... it's so easy once you learn it, a huge benefit over individual cabled-in pedals - just move things wherever you want.

      @@BadMofoMusicCritic yeah I've tried everything, even with the help of their customer service. Fuzzes and overdrive in the loop either squeeled, got totally compressed or sounded different, which I think has to do with the buffer. Various results with different pedals ofcourse, but if your setup works that's awesome.

    Digital is just so good now-a-days, it can be hard to tell the difference between analog and digital effects. Even more so in a band/recording setting, when its in a mix. Those little nuances are just not there anymore and no one would be the wiser. I have a digital effects board and an "analog" board - which depends on the venue etc. What I like more about individual pedals are the designs and the hands on feel of adjusting them. Both most are achievable on a digital multi fx.

      I agree. With amps I still hear and feel a difference but with pedals you can get great sounds with both analog and digital. I mean, companies like Strymon and now Universal Audio make such great recreations of old gear, and so do many others.

    I love my sv20h, we have a classic rock project and I’m looking for a solution for delays and reverbs, for live shows it would be awesome to have presets. I am thinking about buying the Strymon volante, in your experience with the same kind of amps and guitars, should I go Strymon or Hx fx/stomp?

    • @StevenAnthonyGuitar
      @StevenAnthonyGuitar  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I love the Strymon stuff, so if you're only looking for delays and reverbs, the ones in the Strymon might sound better. But I'm happy with the HX, because it's really easy to work with and I have presets for different bands. I only have an overdrive and fuzz on the board, I can do the rest with the HX. I'd say they're two different things with other purposes, but both do a good job at what they're made for.

    sounds like there is some latency when you switched on the fx at 07:28?

    • @StevenAnthonyGuitar
      @StevenAnthonyGuitar  ปีที่แล้ว

      Haven't noticed that myself, would have to check that. Might be in the editing: two cameras and a different audio source. There can always be a few frames marigin.

    I was very curious on this comparison, but it resulted not being fair. The guitar being out of tune midways into the video is an issue for sound perception. Great video otherwise. Cheers

      Yeah I cannot help it, those wraparound bridges can make it hard on you. Cutting it out would take away the spontanious nature of this experiment. I thought the HX did really well, and I still have it.
