Absolutely agree. Covers of iconic songs are a hard sell with me. Disturbed managed to make it their own without ruining it but the best thing about it is it is introducing people to the original and to Simon and Garfunkel.
The Disturbed version is creepy and scary. I wouldn't let me worst enemy hear it. I really feel sorry for people that liked Disturbed. I guess I was raised in a different environment with morals and respect.
Simon and Garfunkel's version, which is so soft, allows you to pay attention to the lyrics, which represent some of the best poetry to come out of the Sixties. And notice that all those beautiful harmonies are coming out of two voices and a single acoustic guitar.
It always makes me laugh when the crowd roars at "10,000 maybe more". They don't seem to realize that the next lines are not very complimentary to them.
This Record was my first that I purchased as a youth...my grandmother who raised me gladly gave me the money to purchase it. Believe me, we really did not have the extra resources but she also loved this Iconic Group. Thanks for posting this and sharing your comments and support of a Timeless Song from the 60’s. Stay Safe and Positive. Happy Holidays 2020’.
Thank you for such a sincere reaction and review. Simon and Garfunkel are in a class by themselves. So many of Paul Simon's songs have been covered by other artists. That in itself is a testament to the caliber of songwriting.
When I was very young, I learned to work the record player. My Mom had a huge collection of 1960s albums & she let me play them. This became my favorite song back then & has been ever since. I love the Disturbed version, but this one remains my favorite.
AHA! I found your video...so glad you saw the original! Just so you know~that was a FREE CONCERT! Also OVER a million ppl showed up from everywhere to Central Park. You'll notice how quiet and reverent the crowd was when they wrre singing. The only time you heard any interaction was sone clapping in time and then some shouting and cheering out when they sang about "10,000 ppl, maybe more" YUP...A LOT MORE! I live on Long Island NY and concerts in Central Park are truly the best! A huge crowd always goes there amd theres NEVER any static cuz they're FREE. Or sometimes I F they start off as pay...after awhile they just give up and make them free after they just can't control the amount of ppl coming in cuz ppl start jumping the fences. Ppl know the concerts usually end up being free so nobody starts any nonsense or none of these artists will ever play there AGAIN. Its not like they didn't JUST play at Madison Square Garden. Most tkmes theg play free concerts the same week FOR THE PPL whi couldn't afford tickets or got locked outta tickets cuz they sold out. A Central Park concert IS a real gift back to us NYers and the others who flock in here. Decades ago I worked the Garth Brooks concert which eventually became FREE and then Billy Joel who lives out on Long Island came out ti NYC and joined the concert. So yeah it became a free double bill that night! WOOHOO! 😉❤😎🤘
Another great reaction. Disturbed version is Great, this live version by Simon & Garfunkel is better and if you take the time to listen to the Original released recorded version, it is by far the BEST.
Their harmonies are terrific. Paul Simon’s songwriting is sheer poetry. The studio version has much more background instrumentation which enhances the lyrics, but it also works with just their voices. I’d recommend any of Billy Joel’s songs. He is a genius and I recommend “The River of Dreams “
Great reaction! Simon has written many hits as S&G and solo. Check out the Boxer. Also...get some headphones! You are missing at least half of the music without them.
Why do people who do 'reactions' tend to favor listening to the 'live' version of songs that were, like this one, hits based on studio releases and not on live recording of that song? Often times, as here, the live versions are A) not representative of the song at it's best, and B) not as good as the studio versions. Sure, some songs are released as live versions--Edge of the Universe by the Bee Gees springs to mind--and are better than the studio version, but that is a rare instance. I would suggest listening to the studio version of this song to fully judge it.
I'm glad you like Simon & Garfunkel. I'm not sure, from what I've heard you say, that you realize that this duo are the original performers of "The Sounds of Silence", "Bridge over Troubled Water," etc. Paul Simon is the lyricist and many of the early versions of his songs just feature vocals and a solo acoustic guitar. They were part of the 'folk rock' genre of the time, along with Peter, Paul and Mary. SImon & Garfunkel were a BIG DEAL in the 1960s, with songs expressing not just the usual new or lost love, but the alienation felt by young people in the 1960s: the Vietnam War (scenes from the war in the evening and late-night news), civil rights demonstrations and race riots, assassinations (John and Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., etc.), the rise of feminism, abortion rights, the perceived hypocrisy of the 'greatest generation' who fought WWII supposedly for freedom when there was segregation of jobs and education by race and gender, etc. etc. etc.
Please check out Joni Mitchell. She is another song writer that captures emotion and stops you in your tracks. Please check out songs - Woodstock, Help me, urge for going, both sides now (original version), River, California...too many to list.
New sub. I enjoyed your thoughtful and intelligent reaction. Chris Cornell's cover of "BillieJean" far surpasses the original by MJ. Love from Toronto 💕
Exactly, it's just a great piece of music. Cover versions are sometimes better, like sequels to original movies are sometimes better. But the original usually takes the cake.
This was not quite their best. Sound of Silence is the theme song of the Classic Movie The Graduate. It was a gem in 1967, and you will love it now. It also has the debut of Are You Going to Scarborough Faire?
You should check out Pentatonix version of this song. They are an a capella group that makes so much music with just their voices, you will forget there are no instruments. New sub here.
This was a song from the sixties telling the story of a wealthy materialistic society turning away from spiritual values, while the underclass suffers as a result. The "neon God" is materialism.
Have you reacted to Hearts cover of Led zeppelin's ' stairway to heaven ' it may change your thoughts on best cover song ever enjoy your reactions n keep up the great song selections!
Please don't use live video versions of these great songs. The original studio versions are the masterpieces, the reason people still love and listen to them. This is nice and all, but still only a pale shadow of the original.
Oh! I absolutely disagree. This stripped down version is so beautiful and emotionally pure. It's my favorite version. Not saying that all the live versions are better but to me this one is.
Two voices. One guitar. Sometimes less is most definitely more. I like the Disturbed version but, for me, this is absolutely perfect.

I'm so glad you got to the real version.. it's so soft and simple. But truly not simple at all..they give this song life.. they sing to your soul.
you should listen to the studio version. they were in perfect synch. the soundtrack to the graduate is also a good taste of simon and garfunkel.
It is a prophetic warning from the 1960’s.
It always makes me laugh when the crowd roars at "10,000 maybe more". They don't seem to realize that the next lines are not very complimentary to them.

There’s always something special about songwriters singing their own songs.
Thank you for such a sincere reaction and review. Simon and Garfunkel are in a class by themselves. So many of Paul Simon's songs have been covered by other artists. That in itself is a testament to the caliber of songwriting.
Sometimes there's now substitute for the original ... keep listening to all good music. Welcome to the Simon & Garfunkel fan club ... keep it going.
modern people don't remember the sixties but s&g bridge over troubled water was at the top of the charts worldwide!! Too bad they couldn't get along

What’s truly amazing is they hadn’t performed together in a long time and yet they still sounded fantastic!
Total beautiful!!!

Good..very good..you're reaction to art..music..very good. You got a new subscriber. Keep it up.
The studio version is amazing, you should hear it next.
Bless your heart

Vozes maravilhosas. Hoje aa músicas não tem letra, poesia. Triste 😢

Listen to The Boxer and America
Listen to John Farnham YOU ARE THE VOICE , when something is wrong with my baby 💝💖
Hey what happened you haven’t posted in two weeks?
Hey! I was away and had to tech detox. Back now though and will start again tomorrow :)
Disturbed ‘s version blew me away with the power. However, S and G version is almost a prayer.

head phones, dude.
The Disturbed cover is really good but...
Simon & Garfunkel - The Boxer
Disturbed couldn't sing in the right key for this song. It was average at best.
Disturbed was the only cover of a Simon and Garfunkel song that I thought was better than the original.
