    Welcome to America! Rules, rules, more rules.

    Yes in small towns there can be no fireworks, but very unusual to have none. I remember bartending in Frankfurt, Germany on New Years. We went to the top of the Marriott and the whole city was lit with fireworks, so cool, so I know what you are missing for NYE.

    I love that you guys got to ride the Hawthorne-Gainesville Trail! I lived in Gainesville for 5 years and would ride the trail several times a week.

    When I first arrived in Australia from England many years ago it took some adjusting from the old world to the new, it looks the same for you.
    And, Southern hemisphere it's hot at Christmas, I do enjoy a swim.

    Wow, what an epic hotshowers hosts, Cathrina and Roger you had! The nicest people you could find on your path. I'm also amazed: near new years eve and cycling in just merino shirts🤯

    Oh my, the 00:00 moment must have been a bit of a disappointment, no fireworks, bars closed, quite a difference from Germany / Europe where the streets would be crowded / busy and a lot of fireworks would be going off... A bit of a surprise to be honest 😉

    You are using the Specialised Pathfinder Pro tyres. They are top rated for gravel racing and highly sought. I think it's just bad luck you got a cut like that.

    • @louisaandtobi
      @louisaandtobi  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We got the Pathfinder Sport, not “Pro”.. maybe it makes a difference. But yea, maybe it was just a bad batch or something, but still very disappointing. ☹️

    Where you guys are from and where you're heading? And how long you're planning to be on a road. I'm originally from Europe but lived here in Florida last 20+ years and biked all over Florida 6K+ miles. Good to see familiar places where I've biked too. Wish you all the best to your travels!👍

      Thanks!
      We are from Germany (Cologne & Dortmund) and embarked on a bicycle tour around the world at the end of June 2021. We arrived in Miami in December and are currently cycling towards Los Angeles. After that we will go further south, to explore Central and South America.
      In total we plan to be on the road for about two years, but we don’t have an exact end date.

      @@louisaandtobi Good to hear. I'm originally from Estonia, it's close, haha. I'm doing the same thing what you guys doing, bike touring. But I do short 3-6 day trips every couple of weeks. Last two years I've done that way 7K+ miles.
      Be safe and wishing you all the best on your grand adventure! 👍🙂

    In America , a lot of rules are more or less suggestions. You can stealth camp for a night at a lot of places quietly and covertly and no one will bother you as long as your up and out early the next morning . It takes a while to learn what is cool to do and what will get you in trouble ----- BUT as foreigners from overseas even if you camp in the wrong place most authorities (policeman) will give you a pass as long as your up and out the next morning.

    I have to say - that’s not normal for a US town for New Years! I can’t believe there weren’t fireworks. Even if there’s a noise ordinance, the town usually does them or someone is still almost always setting them off illegally. Sorry your holidays weren’t filled with more cheer!

    Ah, so sad that you were in Florida for Christmas! “Kind of cool, kinda sad, kinda funny. Definitely a new level of shitty. “
    You nailed it, that’s Florida! Haha. There are much better places to ride in the north and west of the US. Hopefully you got to ride some sweet spots in the south west. I am watching your videos in order.

    For Christmas, a great tradition in the states is to go for Chinese. Jews started the tradition and most Chinese restaurants are open then. Very fun for Christmas.

    Sag bitte "Tire". Nur manche Deutsche sagen "Mantel", wobei es aber ein Reifen ist. Mit dem ganzen Glas und Drähten (Reifen werden gefahren, bis sie auseinander fallen) und Nägeln und Schrauben (von all den Pickup Trucks) auf den Straßen werdet ihr noch viel Freude haben.
    Aber dafür kann man auf den Straßen brauchbare Dinge finden, die so von den Pickups fallen. The road provides. Ein Freund von mir hat mal ein nagelneues $5000 Ebike (noch im Karton) verloren. Leider ist der LKW hinter ihm drüber gefahren, somit hat er nicht mal angehalten 🤣

    • @louisaandtobi
      @louisaandtobi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have 28 inch, 36 spoke rims. Tobi has 47-622 tyres and Louisa 40-622.

      @@louisaandtobi That is not a common size for bicycle touring usually it 26" or size 700.

    • @louisaandtobi
      @louisaandtobi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      700c is the same as 622 (28 inch in Germany).

    I'm sorry you had such an uneventful time on New Years Eve, but as you found out first hand - "Nothing is happening" in NW Florida. I grew up on the "Redneck Riviera" before communities like Seaside and 30A existed. Destin was just a small fishing village and places like Fort Walton Beach and Pensacola were just wide spots in the road. The white sand beaches are beautiful, but at night - well, everyone goes to bed by 10pm and nightlife is basically non-existent. Alabama and Mississippi are even worse, but you'll find some familiar civilization when you arrive in New Orleans. If you need camping accommodations when you reach beautiful Colorado (Denver) reach out to me and if I can't host you in my home I can direct you to a decent camp spot nearby.

    • @louisaandtobi
      @louisaandtobi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yea, that was a bit disappointing! But you are right, we arrived in New Orleans a few days later and really liked it there.
      Thank you for the offer, but in the meantime we already left the US and are in Mexico now. We only cycled through Colorado for about 10 miles. Would’ve loved to stay with you!

    In bear country it is really important to bear bag your food, or use a bear canister, or possibly an Ursa Bag. The PCT bear bagging method is the most reliable bear bagging method. If a bear gets into human food that bear will usually become a “problem bear” and have to be shot. Also there are a lot of other animals that will destroy your food containers and make a big mess.
