I put together a Warmoth tele, one of the best guitars I've ever played in 30 years! All rosewood neck, compound radius, big ass stainless steel frets...hnng
The shim was probably there because often when mating warmoth parts to each other the 22 fret extension will hit the pickguard (epecialy 3 or 4 ply guards) just enough to not allow it to be screwed down and make complete contact with the neck pocket. There should be a gap (piece of paper should slide underneath the 22 fret extension when the neck is screwed on) otherwise you risk incomplete contact and a rising tongue on the fretboard.
This guy gets it^^^ Someone might have accidentally got the 720 mod on the neck pocket too. I don't think Dave has ever ordered and built a warmoth guitar before. When you buy individual parts like a neck and body, Warmoth doesn't just assume they're together. I found that out the herd way...
The cool thing about Warmoth's side-adjustment for the truss rod is that you no longer have to keep taking the neck off the guitar to make truss-rod adjustments, like you do with those old-style Fender necks, you simply adjust it from the side while the neck is still attached to the body, best of all, you still have the old Fender neck look at the headstock end of the neck.
full contact shims are excessive for most minor adjustments, but I think one of the reasons they have been advocated for has been because of how people over-shim with a heel shim, then they overtighten the bolts. This definitely leads to ski jump and warps in a neck especially when it is not in a humidity controlled environment(which it almost never is). Assuming you only need to pitch .25-1 degree or so, and assuming you don't overtighten the bolts, a heel shim is usually fine. I agree with you there
Thanks David. You always make me thirsty. We are Guitar People. ✌🍺🍻. Working on the Night Shift. Reminds me of Foghat "Night Shift". Good song, definitely worth a listen ✌

I completely agree. Dave is odd on his opinion here. Setting pickup heights are also NOT done with a spacer. But I love his sense of humor and watching him do his thing. We just have to look the other way on his oddities.
Isn't a 25 degree shim kinda a little on the excessive side of things? None of my guitars have anything that thick. Normally a strip off of an old business card is enough and sometimes too much
As you hinted, Dave, the previous tech probably put in the shim in an attempt to raise the bridge, thus lowering those shite-tastic, hand-ripping adjustment screws. God, how I hate those little bassas!
Yeah, but the correct answer to that problem is shorter screws. New ones can be bought or stock ones shortened. A shim (in my opinion) is only required when the saddles either won't go low enough or won't go high enough. And the full pocket shim is a wallet lightener more than it solves any technical problem.
@@DrKevGuitar I agree, though I've never seen shorter screws on sale. Must check it out. As for home-shortening, I get the feeling they would never have the same end-shape. I use home-made business cards as tilt-shims, if really necessary.
