This is one of the easiest techniques to hem a shirt in a very quick amount of time. Great for any small hems.

I don’t make or alter clothing (yet - never say never) but, “Yes please!” on future tutorials on alterations. You are an amazingly talented sewist and give us the best tutorials! Your processes are logical and doable and you ate my “go to” for many types of bags and gift projects. Great video, as usual! :) I love the stitch-before-you-cut technique that you showed us, Christine! It removes the fear :O of ruining some else's clothing. And yes, I would like to see some more alteration videos. Maybe some showing how you would repair a tear, etc., too (if you do any of that type of work for customers.)

Your video will of just shown alot of novice sewers how simple and easy it is to alter hems on clothing. Perhaps you could do one on how to sew a buttonhole and sew on a button. thanks Christine always Great! 😊

This tutorial is splendid! My son is short-statured and struggles terribly with getting dress shirts to fit. This is a great technique for hemming! It would be lovely if you could add tutorials on adding darts to take in the back of mens' dress shirts, as well as a tutorial on shortening sleeves that have cuffs. Thank you.

Great video showing how to do a stay stitch first, i would never have thought of doing that and it looks so professional. I would love to see more alteration videos please. Maybe shortening t shirts as i cant ever seem to sew the hems without stretching them 😊

Thanks so much for this video, I just wish you had posted it before I cut into one of my shirts and ruined the curved edges 😅😢. At least now I know how to do it for next time. It was a really good way to have the perfect finish. Love your videos, I watch them all and try every one of the things you show us. I too would love to see me alteration videos, in particular, inserting elastic into the sides seams of purchased trouser waistbands to pull them in as I loose weight. Alteration videos would be great. I am always taking up hems. I am beginner to turn away large skirt hems. Staying with pant hems. Repairing torn jeans between the legs or zipper replacement or repair replacement. Twill pants ripped vertically by the belt loops in the back of the pants.

Thanks to you I just did a bang up job shortening four of the hubs shirts, and you can’t tell my alterations from the original stitching. Yes, more alteration videos, please. I’d also love a video on a large carpet bag so I can use up some gifted upholstery fabric. Really big, like they used to carry on the canal boats. Please and thank you.

Hello Christine, very nice and educational video. Can you show us please, how to make the curved front and sides on a blouse from scratch? I am aware that if the upward curve is too steep it will be troublesome to manouvre.

Thank you Christine this was a very good reminder of things I should know, but forget to do, like stay stitching before cutting. I subscribed so I don’t miss more of your alteration videos. Now, what with osteoporosis and losing about 2” between my neck and waist, everything is too long, even Petite tops. My problem is, shortening a top, say 2” all around, can leave a shirt flared out at the sides because I’m not as wide there as further down my hips. So I take my longer combo French / hip curved ruler and draw a new curve without changjng the shirt’s hem length at the sides. However, the hem at that location has to be opened up in order to blend with the newly drawn curve. I found your video because I’ve been searching for what the correct length is for a woman’s shirt, anyway. All this takes me way more than 20 minutes, the reason why I will not sew for other people😅. Any suggestions are welcome.
Thanks Molly. The other thing you could do is add a dart in front and back. That way you don't need to redo the hem. If it has a dart already, you could increase it😀

Hi Christine - I have a few shirts that need shortening and this video is just what I was looking for. Long time follower of your videos on your home management and sewing projects. Please make more of these videos on alterations. However, I have a question: How do you measure a shirt that has an extra long back (compared to the front) to shorten both the front and back equally? I think the extra long backs look so silly! Thank you and long may you thrive 🙏🙏
Thank you Susan. Hemming the back and front are really personal choice. Often the front is shorter than the back, and if it suits, you can take the same amount off all the way around, but if you still need a shorter back, draw the desired line in with chalk or erasable pen on the back starting from the side seams, then cut accordingly.
I plan to do more alterations videos, but most of what I do are plain pants hems.😀

I’m so glad you’ve done this video. I was going to ask if you could show how to take off 6” from a maxi dress as it’s too long for me. When I sit down the dress sits in the floor so when I go to get up I tread on the skirt and nearly fall over! I’ve measured 6” up from the bottom and marked it with a erasable pen then pinned the original hem up so I can see what it looks like. The skirt is a full circular one and the dress was expensive so I’m very nervous about cutting off the surplus fabric. Sadly I don’t have an overlocker either. Can you advise please?
If it's a woven/cotton maxi dress, the hem should be narrow just as on the shirts I've done in this video, so I'd use the same technique.😀

I converted a curved shirt to a straight shirt just last week for a customer. Both work fine, it really depends on the outcome you'd like for yourself😁

thank you! I need to shorten my 4 year old toddler granddaughters knit sleeves - i have a coverstitch and serger? just a beginner - which to use is best?
I'd go with the coverstitch machine, but practice on other fabric first, and watch some tutorials if you can find them. I will do one, but haven't had the time yet😁
