I live in Capitan, my ancestors are spread throughout Lincoln County. Billy fathered a daughter with a distant cousin of mine in Picacho, NM, my family has one of his saddles, holster, rifle scabbard, bed roll, hat, arrow heads he collected and many more items that belonged to him from that era. We are all getting long in the tooth and thinking about donating items to a museum.

That's quite a collection of American history and heritage, special no doubt and unique in that it's a group of personal items that likely would have seen a lot of use.
A museum would be able to care for them well. If you'd ever be interested in sharing some photos of them with us, we'd love to be able to look at the leather craft styles and materials used.
It could be exciting to try and trace the items to local leather crafters and saddlemakers of the time, and add a bit to the heritage.
Even if not, it's exciting to hear those items exist! And that you get to enjoy them. Thanks for sharing.

@@internationalleatherclub at one time we all took an oath to never share anything with anybody. We believe everybody has skeletons in their closet and we should just let sleeping dogs lie. The thing is those of us who really know don’t have long left on earth. The younger generation of our family doesn’t care and would only be in it for any money they could make off of Billy and then there would be a legal battle over any proceeds. My mother inherited some photos of Billy and others and her living brothers have other items also. There is so much to this story that people don’t realize and never will know. I’ve said too much already. Thank you.

@@_DB.COOPER I understand and can appreciate the family element to it all, especially given the popularity of Billy.

Thank you for the recommendation - that looks ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I hadn't heard of it, and am now very excited 😃 I'll keep an eye on eBay and see if I can get one, looks like an investment, both in cost, though ultimately in great knowledge.

I read in an English news paper, back in the 1980s At a auction house in Lewis Sussex, for sale, Two revolvers (and I think holsters) once belonging to Jesse James. I remember thinking at the time, I wonder how the hell, did they end up in Sussex England?!

    • @internationalleatherclub
      @internationalleatherclub  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

It's incredible where some things can end up! Like that is an interesting piece of history and a story all its own.
I believe some copies of the Declaration of Independence printed broadsides ended up in England and Europe, it must have been quite a journey!

I once new a man back in the 1960s who had an antique shop and in the window a telescope once belonging to Lord Nelson, as soon as he sold it , he would replace it with another one from out the back of his shop (true story, fake telescope)

    • @internationalleatherclub

Some antiques dealers, especially before the internet, were a little less than upfront!
      😃
It's great there's more access to research tools today, to help build provenance, and even moreso, help others authenticate it.
I wonder roughly what % of significant historical items are just carefully-storied replicas.

Maybe, there's a lot of caves around here that Jesse and Frank along with their gang used for hideouts, Jesse's old house on Troost still stands and so does a bank they robbed over in Liberty, they shot and killed a college kid who was just crossing the street right there by William Jewel.

@@jasonashley4579 I recall reading some things about ties to Meramec caverns, and can only imagine the stashes they had and might still have undiscovered.
The Liberty robbery also an indicator how serious they took things. It's interesting how history gives us a look into what happened, while also opening the door to explore so much more around it.
Especially the timeless draw of buried treasure. There has to be some out there
