Revisiting the Carolina Panthers 2024 Draft Night Trades: Was selecting Xavier Legette a mistake?

- The Carolina Panthers entered Day 1 of the 2024 NFL Draft without a first-round pick due to trading up for the number one pick the previous year. However, Panthers GM Dan Morgan managed to secure a selection that night by calling the Buffalo Bills and trading up to take South Carolina WR Xavier Legette in the first round. While Legette potentially represents the Panthers' future WR1, his rookie year, although promising, did not measure up to the other rookie WRs taken in the first round or a few selected immediately after him. Did Morgan make a mistake in taking Legette?
The Panthers continued their quest for offensive weapons on Day 2 of the NFL Draft, trading back in the second round before later trading up to select Texas RB Jonathon Brooks. The Panthers chose Brooks knowing he was coming off a torn ACL. Unfortunately for Brooks and the Panthers, he wouldn't debut until Week 12 and then would re-tear the ACL in his right knee three weeks later, ending his season and raising questions about his long-term future with the organization. Was drafting Brooks also a misstep by Morgan?
The Panthers weren't finished moving around the draft board on that Friday evening in Detroit, as Carolina later traded back with the New York Jets to select Kentucky linebacker Trevin Wallace, who has positioned himself to start in 2025. The trade also yielded a fifth-round pick, which became Chau Smith-Wade, who, like Wallace, is also projected to start on the Panthers' defense in 2025. Was this unassuming trade in the third round the best one Morgan made during the draft?
Morgan made one last trade before the deadline, sending Jonathon Mingo and a seventh-round pick to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for a fourth-round pick. Mingo had been a second-round pick the previous year but was clearly in need of a fresh start. Was this the best trade decision Morgan made during his first year as GM?

The dude is young. Relax and let him develop. I saw his talent, he played a lot better than what we got out of TMJ and Mingo. He wasn’t polished at South Carolina until his senior year. But even before that his talent flashed. I got faith in this kid on being a solid receiver.
He didn’t play a lot better he just got the opportunities with his butter finger self.
The drops people flay him for, many of them were only possible because of catches he made earlier in those same drives. Also he is getting open consistently. Give the rookie time.
But, the Carolina Panthers need to go heavy defense in the draft and a, center !
Agreed, but I think they are gonna go with Mayes or christianson. Wouldn't be surprising to see them draft motons future replacement
Why is this even a subject Xavier is still developing but you can't teach his ability to get open we need him to come down with more balls but he is someone I hope is with us for a long time
Because they could've gotten Ladd Mcconkey, dont tell me you wouldnt choose a Mcconkey & Coker duo????? That would've been amazing!
@xlaostha704x you must have forgotten hindsight is 20/20 😂 no I don't want Ladd over him I like Xavier and hes a great Yac receiver that's fits perfect with our system
@@Heimdadream96 this season YAC ... Ladd: 3.5 XL: 1.3
Best show content ever Julian I love it when you talk like this say it with your chest😂😂😂
Yes, should’ve drafted Ladd.
I agree! The Panthers are ALWAYS drafting guys on potential rather than what they actually are. Meanwhile other teams take players like Lad and they produce from day 1. It's mind boggling how we sitting at home can see this from a mile away but they can't.
We could have saved our draft picks and took, Ladd and Legget in the 2nd rd. We could have waited to grab a RB later.
I think he is definitely gonna be a solid 2, maybe a strong 2 or decent 1. But who knows, maybe he becomes dominant, he definitely has the physical traits
XL is too focused on being a charachter than being a stud WR. He enjoys the attention from fans, sheena and vashti showing how country he is to be a #1 wr.
He should focus more on the JUGGs machine than talking to the media BC if he flames out Vasti won’t hesitate to roast him.
Yet he still out produced TMJ and Mingos career numbers combined . I’ll take that from a rookie . Everyone knew XL was raw . However you can’t coach 6’4 225 with a 4.4 forty . Also his work ethic and toughness are unquestioned. He played banged up all year and never used that as an excuse . Ladd is definitely more polished but XL’s upside is off the charts . He wasn’t expected to be a WR1 this year . In my opinion he overachieved.
It was just his first season. I remember Kelvin Benjamin has a nice rookie season, and I bet few Panthers fans remember him after his first two years.
You complain too much💯💯 the bottom line is finishing 24 going into 25 we’re in a much better position after having a good offseason 2024 let’s continue to build on that and move forward! These dudes are young and everybody develops differently give it time and be happy we look like an organization that finally knows what it’s doing
Why do people act like anyone is giving up on Xavier? He is going to be good. But he’s just not worth first round pick.. he’ll do great. He definitely has freakish ability but look at how Coker doesn’t miss important catches. But again, he’ll be good.
I think that, the Panthers go into training camp with, Young, Plummer challenging Young, and maybe a late QB draft pick or, bringing in another Young QB to challenge Young . But I would love for the Carolina Panthers to, give Matt Coral another chance to be the Young QB, here !
I love this team but I hate the fanbase sometimes….our whole team was a mess XL wasn’t gonna be the savior give him another year and let him ball out
You said Bryce was a bust a few months ago….
I did too! Bryce proved me wrong.
Just give XL 🐓 the off season to develop. He’ll have 1,200 + yards next season, bet on it. 🐈⬛
brick for hands, i doubt he will break 800 next season.
Bs ppl wanted ladd fr9m start of draft season he was probably the consensus pick from fans. That said hope full x will develop the HC and OC are former wr coaches let them cook.
I would have rather had Mckonky but Legget will improve
Don't come for XL. You've been pessimistic af lately in your videos. Dude's a rookie with a bum wrist. He did quite well. Give him the same grace most of us have Bryce.
Lol everyone called Bryce bust XL needs the same treatment don’t care and I was a Bryce supporter everyone calling him a bust don’t wanna hear it
Not even better than undrafted Coker as of now
