One of the greatest songs ever written. So damn epic.
Arguably, one of the best songs of all time! ;)
The bit where it goes from the midst of the hell of battle to the triumph of victory is one of the most epic moments in prog rock. about 14.30.
Geddy Lee said that this album was one of his desert island records. You can listen dozens of times and still hear something new. I would recommend checking out Awaken by Yes - similarly epic.
awaken is incredible, can second that. Gates of delirium is an incredbily difficult to listen with full attention, but it's so rewarding.
For me maybe the best Yes song. Just an epic.

The best next to Close To The Edge
Relayer is my favorite Yes album. I just love the whole thing. I love Close to the Edge, but Gates is definitely my favorite Yes epic if I had to choose one. But, there’s so many other good ones.

I give Steve Howe lots of kudos for taking the time to learn how to play the lap steel guitar featured in the "Soon" portion. It is ethereally beautiful here, especially if your past experience with the instrument is hearing it all the time twanging along in old-style country music songs. Just as Howe managed to make album after album with Yes breaking new ground with different sounds and unique lines and runs, he also managed to adapt the lap steel guitar to progressive rock and use it in new and inventive ways.
The steel guitar is one of Howes favorites. He can play anything!
Just like here in this review, Howe doesn't get enough credit. People often mistake Steve's guitar for keyboards.
Steve Howe singlehandedly made lap steel guitar listenable. He plays it brilliantly, and in a manner I have never heard before.

The song was inspired by Tolstoy’s "War & Peace{. The middle is a battle and they used lots of non-instruments to create the chaos. Boopity Boppity.
This is really a work of art. I hope a lot more people discover this music. It's not for the average person. You'll never hear it on the radio since it'so long. But it's a song you can listen to over and over without ever getting bored there's so much to it. I love to listen to it during my aerobics workout. It really gets you going and puts your mind in another place. Before you know it half your workout is over. Yes is my favorite group but I didn't hear this one until the second concert I saw them. At the time I didn't really get into it. It's not easy to reproduce this one live - impossible. But latter on I rediscovered it and it's been my favorite for decades. Must have heard it a thousand times now. You can't appreciate it the first time. Keep playing it and you'll see what I mean. Glad to see your reaction. Doesn't seem like there will be complex rock music like this again.
Discovering something new...I must’ve heard this a thousand times, since it first was released, but TODAY I just noticed I could hear bullets flying past my ears. Never heard that before!
The first time my friends and I listened to this (actually the entire album) when it first came outwe were understandably blown away and nobody spoke for about 45 seconds until one of my friends said simply "We have to listen that motherfucker again." And so we did, the entire album in silence, mouths agape in amazement. After Going For The One I became disenchanted, but I still listen with reverence their first album all the way up to Going For The One on a regular basis. And now my wife thoroughly enjoys when I blast the ending of Close To The Edge in my truck like 16 times in a row....LLLLOOOOUUUUDDDEEERRRR!!!!

Just to inform you...Steve Howe(lead guitar extraordinaire) is playing a Double-neck slide guitar which is lying down on a wooden box. He plays this slide double-neck guitar with shot glasses on his fingers. It is fascinating to watch.

This is probably the most "aggressive" sounding song Yes ever made. Until you get to the "Soon" part, obviously. Had to laugh when you hit those "that sounds weird" moments. This album makes me wish Patrick Moraz could have stayed with the band for at least one more. Not that I dislike Wakeman, but Patrick brought something really different. This also is probably Steve Howe's highlight album.
Cannot agree more. Although I appreciated all the greats of the era, Moraz was my absolute IDOL as a young god-I-want-to-be-a-keyboardist. Would have loved to hear more work from this lineup. Also his "I" conecpt album is just insane

@@dansonntag4685 Have you heard " Coexistence?" It's Moraz with Syrinx, a pan flute player.
First saw Yes in the early 80's. They were touring with a round, rotating stage. Knew nothing about them, general admission scored 6th row seats. Was absolutely blown away. Next time they returned I had every album, knew every song. Yes and Rush were the best live bands in the world.
Once you reach the point where you have listened to it enough times to play it all back in memory, you will enjoy it best. Because of the complexity, that can take awhile. BUT because of that same complexity I have never grown tired of it in over 40 years of enjoying this treasure.

Ok, now go listen to the live version on YesShows. They elevated it to another level there. Shows what an incredible live band they were in their heyday. Couldn't be touched.
I much prefer the studio version. The "Yesshows" version didn't do as much for me.
I love the YesShows version! Steve Howe tears it up, and the whole arrangement has a more frantic vibe. I also like the timing of several sections, especially the ending.
@@darylquintana1420 I think it flows better than the studio, although I love that one, too. I was just getting to know the band when I heard the YesShows live album and I'll never forget how blown away I was by that Gates.

One of very favs bands - new subbie here, impressed...a 62 yr. young Virginian in U.S.
By this time,Rick Wakeman was replaced by Patrick Moraz,who left soon after for The Moody Blues. Rick Returned for the "Going For The One" Album.
You life will never be the same. FYI there is only one live performance of this song that I can find. The original had some sound issues, it was outdoors in 1974 but someone dubbed a show from a few days later where the sound was really good. Unbelievable to watch this live from 50 years ago. YES did this song last year on their tour. Not the same with a different line up but still a work of art.
The Single "Soon" was taken from :"Delirium", the final part,and was edited at its end by Atlantic Records.

You went deep into Yes with this one. This album is a fav of fans, but if we fans wanted to turn the average person in to Yes, Relayer might be one of the last ones to start with... unless we knew the person was very open minded about progressive music. (That said the last part Soon at the end was released as the single and very pleasant to the ears for any music lover. So thanks for being opening minded because this track delivers. The journey continues on side two with Sound Chaser and To Be Over. I love this album.
Next classic Yes to listen to. Close to the Edge. And getting back to your reference about round about, the album Fragile deserves to be listened to from from front to back. 🙏🏻

Good reaction. I'm happy you could identify the classical influence because a progressive rock band is a handful of people trying to sound like a large orchestra.....and succeeding. You will like a little-known band called Stick Men, made up of 3 well-known studio musicians, 2 of which play an instrument called a Chapman Stick, which is a combination of bass and guitar. I use sun a lot in my lyrics. To me and in my lyrics in my songs it symbolizes light, good in mankind and searching our own sun (sun as in meaning).

This was the peak of Yes' progressive creativity. After "Relayer", it was all downhill for Yes. "Going For The One" is regressive in comparison.

@@bauertime It was written for the Olympics. And its an Olympic feat how Jon was able to sing those difficult lyrics as fast and clear as he did especislly in concert with no teleprompter. Great song to drive to.
