- Hello everyone!
I am Jeffrey from Malaysia, a FoxGo 1D player who aspires to become a strong amateur Dan in my pursuit to spread the passion of this game.
Welcome to my very first video. I am here to share one a game that showcased the clash of territorial vs. influence game ideals back in the 90s between master of sanrensei a.k.a Cosmic Style, Takemiya Masaki and master of territorial game, Cho Chikun!
This game is played in 1987 for the 12th Meijin playouts. Game is won by Cho Chikun by Black's resignation. Let's see how Cho Chikun masterfully denies Black's massive moyo to win the game.
Let's relax and enjoy the gameplay.
I hope my limited knowledge of the game does not affect the enjoyment of you watching me walking through this game, I will of course become stronger and hopefully be able to explain things better in future.

I like your respect for the players. The music and tuk-tuk of the playing, your voice... good for calm focus :)
Amazing. I really like the level of commentary you provided, not too much, not too little
Fantastic video. The pacing of the match and the quick to the point commentary is so good. Hope to see more of these in the future!
🎯
Glad you enjoyed it!
This game reminds me of a Go proverb; "If black has no corners, black should resign; if black has all four corners, black should also resign". I love Takemiya sensei's well known style but here it seems like he overestimated the power of his influence. After white has clearly consolidated corner points there is no way for black other than to try and grab some big points in the centre and the sides. Cho Chikun would never allow him to create that huge moyo in the centre. At the end position it is clear that black can never have enough points, actually he doesn't even have an eye yet.
Great commentary thank you very much. So much to learn.
Hi, Saya dari Malaysia juga.
The invasion of the moyo and the subsequent escape is brilliant. It's interesting how he starts so high - there's a valuable lesson there. But for us mere mortals, allowing the opponent to build such a huge framework would surely be dangerous? Too much scope for getting killed when we try to jump in...
Fear of moyo is common, its akin to going into a fight against someone who has looks better with stiff muscles and tall figure, but one has to believe that moyo is merely a "framework", its an unsettled space/area. Once a player manage to overcome the mental hurdle, even the moyo player would question himself if he can gain anything from such a huge framework he/she built. Learning sacrifices and sabakis are the key to opening this mental lock. I lost a lot of games in the process of trying to breakthrough moyo, lessons must be learnt by experiencing them first-handed.
These players were long-time rivals, so there could have been a bit of psychology at play.
If you know your opponent always caps the invasion from above, then you will start high to give yourself more room.
Hello, I just wanted to say that I loved the video and the analysis! Definitely keep posting more!
Wonderful video! You strike a nice balance between explaining moves and letting the stones speak for themselves. Liked and subscribed, looking forward to more!
I am a terrible DDK but I loved this breakdown! It is amazing to see what moves I can now recognize as being the obvious move to make, but still be baffled at the foresight of other moves I’d never consider!
yesss another high quality go channel? count me in
This is exactly the type of game review I enjoy! Instant subscribe!
Thank you and looking forward to more!
Great video. Please keep posting
Thanks! New video coming soon after the hectic Chinese New Year has ended =D
Awesome video, the setup, background music, explenations, well made. Thank you! Keep up the good work!
Damn, Cho Chikun played some brilliant moves. So good!
Great video! Great level of commentary and very nice simple presentation. Very well done
Thank you so much! Stay tuned for the second game :) They'll be playing the same exact opening 2 years later in 1989.
I think the same. I enjoyed a lot like seen a movie, a very good one! 😄
Great Video!! Subscribed!
Maybe the real treasure was the eyes we made along the way.
This is a great video please make more.
Really good video. It’s nice to hear the intended strategy of the moves of the game unfolds. Most go videos just have the moves and expect beginners just to know what the pros were thinking or trying to do…
Awesome video! I love Cho Chikun's games and you explained this one fantastically. I'm looking forward to your next video :)
Great video, great format. I love that this video is not 45 minutes long. Interesting game!
And the win condition for Black was extremely clear! Kill that dragon and he owns the whole board, fail to kill and he gets crushed! No room for a close game, huge point swing either way :)
Thanks for sharing this game. It was a nice "simple" game in the sense that black decided to try to kill to win the game. However, I want to say that in a game of moyo, it is not a necessary condition to kill whatever stones your opponent throws into your framework. Most of the time, it is enough to chase a weak group and create some territory or destroy the opponent's with the thickness accumulated during the attack. These games tend to be more subtle. Maybe in next game ?
I agree with this. Perhaps they were trying to prove each other who’s ideals of Go was better back then.
This is what makes Go fun 😊
Very nice, elegant and instructive video. Keep it up!
Fantastic presentation style and simple explanations. Well done. Subscribed.
This is the best intro I have ever heard
Yoooo please upload more
I miss the old josekis.
welcome to youtube new subscriber here for the journey
It was tight, but looks like White was still having all the fun here :) Got his profit up front then ran that dragon all over the damn place.
Thanks for the video!
Wonderful!
Great game, great pacing, great commentary. Gained a sub!
Continue to make videos please!
I love this style of video. You going to do any more?
More kifu spreads please 👍
Big fan of the video, only thing I might ask for is if you played out one or two critical tesujis (as in the impact of what moves they stop or force). Such as the nose Tesuji at 10:37, to help show the importance of the move.
Looking forward to more videos!
Thanks for the feedback!
I will keep in mind to play out the variations in my next video, especially ones that I thought are critical.
Back to the topic, the nose tesuji during 10:37 threatens 3 points:
1) further invasion into Black's top side
2) to connect to the white stone that crawled out on top side
3) to capture the 2 Black stones
It is unlikely point (3) can be achieved, but bear in mind the single cutting White stone on the right, although weak, is creating a trouble where Black has to spend moves to remove it unwillingly. In Black's perspective, letting it die naturally would be best. White can then use this opportunity to force Black to play with that concern in mind and try to gain benefit of point (1) or point (2).
In the real game, Black decided to defend against point (2) and compromise with point (1).
White also gained something else, which is stability for its group now that White had more confidence of making 2 eyes after the exchange. So, Black's left side wall suddenly became weak, and White cruised onto victory from there.

Thanks a lot for the reply, and explaining the points in a clear manner.
Looking forward to the next video!
Hello, im GO player from VietNam
Adding some comments on what AI thinks would be even nicer.
That board is awesome, where did you purchase it?
Its from Japan, but I bought it from another friend, so it's technically pre-owned.
may I know where did you get your GO equipment?
They are all purchased from another friend of mine. The original source is from Japan Miwa Goban store / Aoyama Gobanten
Loved your content! Maybe turn off the music or upload two versions of the video? I find music quite distracting, but that's just me I know ;)
It’s not just you. Music is the primary thing that turns me off to Go videos and Go streams. Everyone has their own tastes in music, so you’re just introducing something that’s bound to turn someone off. No music is non offensive, as people (including the content creator with earbuds) can listen to their own music if that’s their thing.
I'd the concern about the music in the beginning, but the idea was that I am worried it might get boring when I wasn't talking. So I decided to keep it more subtle and less distracting possible.
If no music is way better I might as well just one-shot record and do some visual touch ups ;) Thanks for the feedback!
I liked the music, but I agree with the point that if someone likes the music will they will not leave if you don’t have music, but if they don’t like the music they will leave. It’s more likely, so maybe better for your channel to do no music.
Or maybe next time try just a little softer??
Ok so it's okay to give my opponent a large mojo as long as I invade and make 15 "splendid" moves defending.
Haha well said. Lesson learned!
Did you memorize all the moves?
Yes, I played through 3-4 times at least before I started to do my recording, akin to watching a movie multiple times so I could share a bite sized version of it 😊
Where is da second episode???
Ep 2 is out! Do check it out 😉
More videos like this PLEASE! Maybe Go Siegel vs. Honinbo Shusai (The Game of the Century)?
Sounds great!
