It restricted movement a lot as the technology for lighting back then was less developed. Plus the leds would run hot when they were on? Cant remember specifics.
I make the units that light up. I can add them to just about any piece of clothing or furniture, but they cannot be machine washed. Dry clean only. Average battery life of about 8 hours, and my jacket has 500+ LED. All neopixel, all sound and data reactive.

If this film could smell of sizzling neon-lamps, new circuit boards, hot-silicon kissed air and fresh flux/solder, I would never leave the theatre. Every day, I strive to find a 'grid' of my own. The batteries used to power the suits also only lasted for 15 minutes so overall the suits were very inconvenient but super cool
