The Dali slipped through the very large gap between it and the bridge pylon.
Wonder if the city will sue themselves for allowing an unprotected bridge structure to exist in a busy shipping channel. Remember the shipping channel was there long before the bridge was built
Baltimore City Officials should take a good look in the mirror to see some other people who share responsibility for this catastrophe. Baltimore allowed ships of ever increasing size to use their port without ensuring that their bridge was protected against collisions with the larger ships. While the FHWA is the ultimate authority for highway safety, the local authority of Baltimore may well also have responsibility for the safety of their waterway.
The shipping company only wants to pay 44 million and they have filed a court motion. That amount may not even pay for the clean up so what choice do the people have. This is going to get very messy.
There are loads of people CURRENTLY suffering as a result of this. The port workers who have no work. I don't think the dead people if they were still alive would wish for everything to be halted on their account. The lawsuits are meant to try to make things whole as much as possible for the people who were impacted by the disaster. When there is a car wreck does the fire department continue to work on pulling out a dead body and make the passenger who is still alive wait?

The tiny concrete dolphins that are too far away from the bridge and might stop a tug boat but they simply weren't big enough to be of any protection to the bridge like the ones at the Betsy Ross Bridge. Next comes the people who certified the Dali as fit for service after being given a clean bill of health. MAERSK just chartered her, not even one of their vessels, so they cannot be blamed. That would be like the Titanic sinking then suing the passengers.

You have many operations going on at once. E.G. These vehicles maybe pushed into the mud by bridge structures. -intermodal boxes taken off ship and waiting for a high tide to get it off mud. -cutting and removal of steel bridge. -concrete/asphalt removal
One survived because his vehicle had a Manual Window….instead of power windows…and was able to roll down the window so he could escape his vehicle. This is just more proof of why vehicles windows should go back to being manual. Manufacturers are now making new vehicles have all windows be laminated so they will no longer break with the window breaking tool that many of us have in our vehicles to break windows if they are in water and can’t be rolled down. Manufacturers are actually making these windows more difficult to escape from….so now in new vehicles….not only will your power windows not roll down in water…but your window tool won’t work to completely break the window…vehicles are becoming death traps. All bridges should have to have big barriers that keep ships from colliding with the pillars….the fact they were never installed here, when this particular bridge sees a lot of ship and barge traffic, is a crime.

You have a Federal shipping channel and a State owned bridge/port. The "Port of Baltimore" itself may own or lease some of these structures.

Loss of power = loss of propulsion. If thrust is not provided thru the rudder = very limited direction ability. = Out of control large ship.
Actually, it can take MUCH more than 1/2 a mile. A vessel of that weight, without power, can carry on for miles.
