I'm guessing they named it the platypus because the platypus is kind of a otter but also kind of a duck. The platypus is kind of a Glock but also kind of a 1911. It's a mix between the two just like the animal is a mix between two animals
Living in WA this is great. I have loads of G17 mags from before the ban but havent been able to get into 2011s yet because I refuse to buy 10 round mags.
Yeah, one of the primary reasons I got one. It works great though some of my magpul mags don't want to cooperate. I am also concerned about the wear on the mags from the mag release. Haven't had anything happen yet but I don't really want to find out the hard way.
According to the stealth arms site: “The Stealth Arms Platypus maintains the 1911 grip angle of 17.5 degrees.” Thanks for the review! My only concern is cerakote wear. I’d hate to buy one and then it look sloppy after a year of light use.
If your Cerakote wears off, it means it hasn't been properly applied. Properly applied Cerakote should be extremely tough. I can't even think of a gun surface finish that is supposed to be tougher than Cerakote.
I'll leave this here, from Sniper's Hide user Redcreek1, from a thread discussing what is the best gun finish, about Cerakote (because TH-cam hates links): "Cerakote’s properties for rust resistance as tested using ASTM B117 Corrosion testing is over 5,000 hours without onset of corrosion. Hardness for firearms finishes it typically tested using the ASTM D3363 Pencil Hardness scale and Cerakote is rated at 9h, which is as high as the scale goes. In Tabor Abrasion (wear) Testing ASTM D4060 Cerakote withstood 0ver 8,000 abrasion cycles of an 8” abrasive wheel against 1.0mil coating Adhesion Cross-Cut Tape (ASTM D3359) shows a rating of 5b Impact (ASTM D2794) Cerakote withstands 160inch pounds of impact without cracking or loss of adhesion." Some claim QPQ nitriding is tougher, but: 1) that works only on steel, while Cerakote works on everything 2) claims corrosion resistance, but nothing beats Cerakote at corrosion resistance 3) claims increased lubricity, but there are Cerakote types for increased lubricity if you need that - increased lubricity on the outside of a slide or outside of a barrel is worse than useless.
I first clicked on this video several months ago, and clicked away about 7 minutes in for some reason I cannot recall now. Tonight I clicked on it again and resumed watching from the point where I had left previously. I'm glad I came back! You made a good video about my second favorite pistol. My absolute favorite is and will always be any traditional 1911 in .45ACP. I have three of those. I have two Platypus ( Platypii ? ); one bull barrel and one bushing barrel. When they finally release the other calibers they have said are coming I will probably buy another one in either .45ACP or .40 S&W. I have other double-stack 1911 type 9MM pistols, some less expensive and one more expensive than the Stealth Arms Platypus. They aren't getting shot as often because I enjoy the Platypus more. You are correct - this is a really good gun.
Your comment about designing a reliable magazine is so accurate. The POF Tombstone is a neat idea. A magazine fed 9mm lever action. It uses POF's own magazines, but they're garbage. If they made it to accept Glock, MPX, or CZ Scorpion mags, they could have a winner. Even at $1,800. Great video!
I have to say so 10-12 years ago after I got a pof and realized it's not quite so compatible with gen 3 pmags, I was a little disappointed. I really enjoyed that gun, though, and wish I never traded it
Your review is exactly how mine went in my head after renting one. Fun to shoot and extremely accurate. Most accurate pistol ive ever shot. The only issue i had was the grip texture. And they have a grip texture upgrade now, so i bought one. Long wait ahead.
I've never seen one of your videos. That said, I really liked your review. I appreciated your honesty. In regards to this specific video, I felt like your opinions were well informed. Your pros and cons were concerns in line with my own. One of the biggest points for me was I don't think I ever heard you mention a price comparison to another gun. In an honest review, I don't feel like there is much of a place for cost, especially comparing it to another gun. I know how much guns cost, I watch videos to get your opinion of how the gun ran, not what it cost. I'm not saying costs can't be mentioned, it just not what I, personally, am looking for in a review, Thanks, great job. I'm now a subscriber.
I’ve been very pleased with my Platy though admittedly I haven’t run as many rounds through mine yes as you ran for your review. Everyone that handles it loves it.
Would you recommend the bull barrel non bushing or the bushing version? Talk of the Staccato around the department. Of course drop safety is a problem, but if a 2011 is approved then I see this as a rational contender. Only issue will then being able to pair it with a Safariland Lvl ALS/SLS holster that works.
I have had mine for 4 months now, shot it in 4 competitions thus far, probably 2k round total and mine has been amazing. I think i had 1 ftf in the first 10 mags or so but never an issue since. Really happy with it so far
Ive used both, i havent had luck with standard g17 magpul mags because the baseplates wont seat when the magwell is on (too big) but the extended magazines work great
Happy to see a channel with a left handed shooter. Great info no longer on the fence especially after this review and they have the shot show updates available now!!!
What do you think about the grip thickness? I’ve always felt the grip on a 2011 like a staccato is a bit thick. Is the platypus the same, or slightly thinner due to it using Glock mags?
Any anticipated issues with more "forward" extended optics such as the SRO or the new Trijicon HD in regard to failure to extract/eject? I have a the Trijicon RMR HD mounted on a gen 5 Glock 34. Would love to confirm this would have no issues with the Platypus being the optic mounts so close to the breech.

Wonderful and very honest objective reviewing as always, Aaron! Agreed though, could use a better name, but I'm glad to see a shooter and I do mean a real shooter talking about this gun and giving it and Stealth Arms the love they deserve. I've had hands on with these for a while now and every gun has been a very good build with excellent quality. The gunsmithing side also appreciates that this gun is still very much a 1911 under the hood so any tuning is very familiar to any (American) smith worth their salt. I do agree it needs a new name though, but as to that name I myself can't really think of much that also doesn't sound corny or overused by other gun companies like mythical hybrid creature names, other normal animals, etc. ("Stealth Arms Chimera" sounds like a cheap Turkish gun for example)
Again Arron good job bruh. I may not be purchasing a Platypus anytime soon due to being vested in a Staccato P, Atlas Apollo and Legion Precision Chiraq which those two are on order. If you would have made this video a month ago I would have thought about it. 😎

By the way stealth arms specifically says on their website that it uses a 1911 grip angle. The magwell is at the Glock angle but the rest of the gun is just a regular 1911 angle.
They have the commander size 4.25 barrle but I wouldn't hold my breath on a shorter grip that's a whole new machine setup it would probably result in a more expensive pistol that would literally be getting less material for more money.
Been following the Platypus for awhile, you just don't hear of issues... Small company doing boutique levels of QC. And the builder is just such a huge attraction for the price.
eh I have one and while it's worth every cent and a great gun it does lack the boutique levels of attention to detail that my higher end 2011's have. My safety has a bit of play in the down position and came with a pretty bad dehorn job that had the levers pretty sharp on the undersides (sharp enough to shave skin off my thumbs). The ambi safety also tends to pinch my palm when I deactivate it so I have to adjust my grip as I thumb it down or just accept the pinch. I also don't like the 2 pc guide rods they use but that's an easy fix as dawson sells a replacement for the 5" and wilson combat sells a replacement that allows for the use of flat wire springs in the commander sized guns. Also, my cerakote job is wearing awfully fast, but that's not really stealth arms' fault.. cerakote is just kind of a crappy gun finish. What I WILL ding them for though is that with all the customization they offer for the gun, they don't let you choose a more durable finish like a dlc/pvd or metallic coating like chrome. I did request a lighter trigger, and mine came in at around 2.5-3# and crisp enough that I wouldn't bother fiddling with it at all... but it's just not like a custom shop gun sub 2# light or like wilson combat crisp on the break. Still, better than anything I've felt in the price range and a long shot better than what staccato is churning out. My favorite thing about the gun is that it's actually lighter than most other 2011's. I have the commander version and it barely weighs more than the glock it takes its mags from. The 1 pc frame is def milled out to be lighter than most hybrid frame/plastic grip 2011's. That coupled with the less aggressive but still adequate grip texture that ppl somehow don't like (but I do for its purpose) makes it a great carry gun as long as you eschew the magwell.
6 months late to the party but trying to decide between one of these or an agency 19x with a ramjet(maybe the sage special). About the same money (little more on the agency because of the ramjet)
Yo Aaron, if I lived closer you could do a review on the atlas Apollo I’m getting 1st of march, Matt at Arzen arms did me a solid, I don’t think anyone has one yet.
It's weird how the M&P uses metal mags with a polymer mag release without issues, but others have issues when the mag release is metal on polymer magazines and vice versa.
The company should sell polymer tipped or complete polymer mag releases. Easy fix for an actual onset issue. My first glock were gen 4. So dont have any steel plated gen 3 mags.
PLEASE DO A DROP TEST ON THE BARREL TIP. GARND THUMB JUST DID A DROP TEST VIDEO OF A BUNCH OF GUNS AND THE 2011S ALL WENT OFF WHEN DROPPED BARREL FIRST

That coupled with the less aggressive but still adequate grip texture that ppl somehow don't like (but I do for its purpose) makes it a great carry gun as long as you eschew the magwell.
does ANYONE know if and where you can get a extended slide stop/slide release?
6 months late to the party but trying to decide between one of these or an agency 19x with a ramjet(maybe the sage special). About the same money (little more on the agency because of the ramjet)
Have had a commander size for about a year . Really do like. Getting ready to order 5 inch with bull barrel.
When did you switch from gold dots 147gr to the 124gr? And +p?
About ten years ago.
Yo Aaron, if I lived closer you could do a review on the atlas Apollo I’m getting 1st of march, Matt at Arzen arms did me a solid, I don’t think anyone has one yet.
It's weird how the M&P uses metal mags with a polymer mag release without issues, but others have issues when the mag release is metal on polymer magazines and vice versa.
i wondered why i hadnt saw your year end bourbon review!!! guess it was on payper view!!! thanks for sharing
🇺🇸
Finally. Thanks SD!
the Patreon, is that only available to CONUS people?
Great review as always
The company should sell polymer tipped or complete polymer mag releases. Easy fix for an actual onset issue. My first glock were gen 4. So dont have any steel plated gen 3 mags.
The mag thing shouldn’t be much a worry how often do u destroy pmags the mag catch on a ar is 90 degree angles
The Platypus is a fierce and graceful animal. The king of the jungle. No matter how good this gun is, it is unworthy of such a magnificent namesake.
Lmao. Guns better than that creation ever be.
I have one and it is a fantastic gun!!👍👍
You should do a review on the sig MCX spear LT conversion kit
PLEASE DO A DROP TEST ON THE BARREL TIP. GARND THUMB JUST DID A DROP TEST VIDEO OF A BUNCH OF GUNS AND THE 2011S ALL WENT OFF WHEN DROPPED BARREL FIRST
I opted for P320 AXG legion only because I havent trained muscle memory for a safety in many years. Ill probable pick one up at some point but the new P365 AXG Legion I just added left me without disposable income for a bit. Im loving the SCS for P320 you reviewed recently. Running EPS carry on the P365s now and love them as welll.
The Oracle Arms 2311 takes P320 mags. Then you can share mags between it and your AXG.
How’s it as a service pistol?
makes you wonder why they didnt go with another mag? Mp or 320?
Far more glock style mags floating around the any other mag with two exceptions ar15 and 1911s that I would suspect that's why they went with glock mags.
That 25 yard group looked well under an inch...
I just want them to make it with a commander size grip... Give me that 5" barrel with an easily concealed grip!
