  • Following on from the series of MacCaig poems, we've prepared 6 new poetry revision videos which cover the Carol Ann Duffy poems set for the first part of the critical reading paper of the SQA's Nat 5 and Higher English exams. The fourth poem in this series is “War Photographer“.

Thank you so much for these vids 😭I tend to look into the words toooo much, and not analyze the actual written
style. This series helps me keep my head out the clouds and feet on the ground.

The only thing I dislike is that *Yes thank you for the video teacher but did you have to give us the answer?* Basically we're doing the exact same poem and it would basically be copying all of these points.

Thanks for your feedback, and I can see why you might feel this is 'doing the work for you' (indeed it's very admirable that you don't want this to happen!). However, these videos are only meant as a study/revision 'aid' and not a definitive answer (which would, in any case, depend on what question you'd been asked). Watching a video may hopefully stimulate ideas in students' minds about key concerns in the poem, which they can then reflect on and develop (or ignore!) when they subsequently do their own work. So it's not about having it playing while you're actually doing an assignment, but rather using it to provide food for thought prior to an assignment. For example, a student might watch an annotation video one day then go away and think about some of the ideas explored in the short film, but equally bring their own thoughts and interpretations into their actual homework/assignment. I hope this helps and thank you once again for taking the time to comment.

@@TheLearningCauldron Thank you for responding and delightfully explaining why you think it's good that we are taught this way and I simply agree to it!
I think it's so fascinating on the variety poems can come in and this analysis was done amazingly.
I think I just didn't do well with the assignment in general due to how it was just writing it all down instead of actually getting to pursue my own thoughts with it?
Your explanation here is really helpful to me as it reminds me about how I should look more into figuring my thoughts.
This was a really well done video and I think in that moment I was commenting it I was just struggling with the stress of the work.
*I hope you are safe and well!*

@@mintie66 Thank you :-) I'm glad the explanation was useful. Wishing you the very best of luck with your next assignment. It's good to be clear on the theme(s) of each poem and (in each case) about the main techniques that the poet uses to explore the theme(s). Learn a selection of quotes for each poem which are relevant to the theme(s), and which demonstrate various techniques that you could be asked about. Hope this helps :-)
