- This Haimer 3D probe was a gift from @nikolaiownz , but I was not able to get it adjusted to work smoothly. But my mate Luke visited, and he has a lot more experience with servicing gauges, so I asked him to take a look at it.

Glad to help out a bit :)
You sure did. Thanks a lot Luke. This should save me some time in my setup.
@@RotarySMPit was fun. Might have to get myself one of them after trying it out.
@@LCalleja Good idea :)
@@RotarySMP Especially as I just broke my starret edge finder :(
@@LCalleja Bummer. What happened?
Credit to them, but mostly to you for doing the final fix by breaking it.
My valuable contribution :)
the forecast that the probe will be broken during use was at the level of 99% confidence)))
At least. :(
I just love things that when you disassemble, 2 springs and 6 things fly out all at once 🫨😵💫🤦♂️😂
Yeah, that is why I asked Luke to do it :)
@@RotarySMP A knowledgeable friend is the best, otherwise it’s wise to have some diagrams before attempting.
@@iteerrex8166 Luke is very good at this stuff, but he did search for videos and instructions as well.
So I noticed the question that popped up on the right of my screen...
And I have to ask, who gets to say what is the right way or 'backwards'?
I like what Luke said, "well I have experience breaking things"... don't we all!
One of the things I like about this channel is the humility where it's okay to admit we are human and f#c! things up! And we can laugh it off!
Thanks for another quality video! Tschüß
Thanks Johannes. I am glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the kind feedback.
Surprisingly few parts 😮
Hi Julia,
Yeah, it is a clever design.
It always nice to get a tool back into service
Thanks Robert. It really is. And this should be quite a time saver.
Right at the end of your video you mentioned turning a HHS blank with a diamond insert. Now I have never tried turning hard steel with diamond but I have done it many times with CBN inserts. I have always used diamond for abrasive stuff like carbon fiber of glass reinforced plastic. As well on the grinder I would use diamond for carbide and CBN for steel.
I was wrong, it is a CBN insert. It worked well on HSS-E.
Great choice of music.
Hi Willem, glad you liked it.
The pink ceramic probes remind me of old Magnetti Marelli sparkplugs.
Hi Jim, were they also brittle and easily destroyed :)
@@RotarySMP I don't think I've ever broken one, though I have worn a few to where the ground tine is almost completely gone.
Still have a few for the old Ducati's
@@jimurrata6785 Nice. I have a couple of cousins who are motorbike mechanics in NZ who specialise in old Duc's. Lovely machines.
I've always wondered how those things worked , actually very simple!
Oh and Hi Luke
Thanks Steve. It is. I hope it speeds up my work flow a little.
All hail St. Luke. Good on yer mate, I hope Mark got you some nice Strudel or something for fixing his gear. What a team!
Absolutely, Luke is a champ!
Nice! Always liked the looks of those Haimer probes. As I recall, NYC CNC accidentally spun one up to a thousand RPM or more…it didn’t work after that 😄
I hope I dont repeat that error :)
@rotarySMP can you program your CNC computer to disable the spindle motor whenever tool 1 is selected?
My company sells these units. You might be shocked at how often they get spun up. 12kRPM in a robodrill modifies them quite significantly.
@@dwegmull Good question. I need to look if LinuxCNC has that option standard.
forum.linuxcnc.org/49-basic-configuration/40416-prevent-spindle-start-if-a-certain-tool-is-selected?start=10#303156
@@wtsct339 I bet it does. Haimer must love the repeat customers.
What a nice measuring tool. Great.
It sure is! Should speed up set up a bit.
I gotta say, you should look into (making?) A conduction probe. Light turns on as a current path is completed through the machine. Maybe make that trigger a lil transistor or mft or a stack of such so that the machine can know when the switch is triggered. That or use what amounts to a series of IR leds and a remote receiver. The device is super simple and probably a fun lathe project.
I started making a 3D probe to tie in with LinuxCNC, but it it ended up on the low priority project pile. Maybe I will get back to it.
@@RotarySMP Well, you got the tools for it. at least most of them. That being the grinder and the lathe. it's just a ball on the end of a stick with a plastic separator either mechanically held or glued on, or even screwed on, though if I remember correctly, threads are not a locating feature. It's definitely not a priority, yeah, but if you need to get something out and you're stuck twiddling your thumbs... it might be something you can do, if you're comfortable with electronics. really, yeah, the hardest thing to do is to get it talking to LCNC while rotating. Hence my idea of using 3-6 IR LEDs. could also use slip-rings but that mightn't be the most reliable. Also rotation's to couter the ball maybe not being round enough.
Luke to the rescue.....again.
Yes, he is a champ!
So awesome to see it working again :)
It sure is a cool tool. Thanks Nikolai.
ahaha, I'm glad those haimer tips I sent you are coming in handy. Hopefully they don't still smell like a burnt down shop.
Thanks a lot for them. Especially as they are the right sized ones. If I hadn't munched the 4mm one I would not have noticed.
I find that the problem for me taking something like that apart; is that I end up with enough parts left over to build another one and make an FM radio!
Hi Bill, that is also my experience, therefore the delegation to Luke :)
Yay new tool. Or finally fixed tool. Whichever.
Yeah, about time :)
I bought a used Haimer last year. It was my big tool envy purchase of the year. Be careful with the tips. They are about $85 US each. Once you Haimer, you can never go back.
Thanks for sharing. I need to reset all the tool offsets in my tool table based off the Haaimer, but also look forward to using it.
great video!
Thanks for the feedback. Glad you liked it.
Nice job getting that working guys, should make setups faster now!
Thanks Alan. I hope so as well.
Ahh finally got also böhlerit in the game. Quite nice tools they have sadly only buy able through schmidt's.
Not sure what heat treat that is, ,but 1.3207 can get up to HRC 67. The Schaublin did really well with it though.
Hope you checked the runout after you snappede the 4mm off and mounted the 5mm. Since your suppose to always check them every time you mount a new. Onee in ( when I was still in traning to become a machinest I snapped one off. Put in a new one and didn't understand why it was so much off. Then one of the old guys told me that you suppose to check it every time you mount a new ball. Cause it's never perfectly centered/just like the last one. And when I then checked it it was about 0.4mm off )
Personally I would try and make a spindle toolholder with the face match the 3d probe and is pulled up through the body itself. Witch makes it as short as possible. Free up a tool holder and also seems like a little fun project to be honest
Yep, had to dial it back in again.
Good idea on the tool holder. I have a lot of more urgent projects, but may do that.
Cool 😎
Thanks Joel.
A whole block on the whiteboard without items! Wonder how long that lasts.
It didn't :)
Mark, what's your thoughts on the AUA jet losing its nose ("propeller"😂 as some media called it) in the hailstorm? The airline seems to have a run, now this incident after scrapping an almost new plane by hitting some ground installations only a few weeks back...
Yeah, the Neo was not AUA's fault. The towing was done by the airport company. I dont know enough about weather radar to know whether the crews report that the storm cell was not shown is plausible.
"i tested it and it worked fine" 😂
Yeah, destructive testing :)
_and i tested it, it works fine_ .. i feel bad for laughing at that!!
Yeah, destructive testing :)
❤
Thanks.
The cleaning sequence gave me @atkelar vibes. He's a fellow Austrian TH-camr.
Hi Alexander, I'll have to check him out.
so nyc cnc has a sla print you can print that uses 2mm pencil led to replace the ceramic
Thanks for the tip. I 'll check that out.
If it's impossible to fix... just ask Luke. For him it's a walk in the park.
And then Mark will screw it up again :)
Ouch Michel... the truth hurts you know :)
There sure were a lot of screws holding it together.
Hi Ken. Four to center the ball, and then another four to locate the dial correctly in the travel for the ball size. Should speed up my set up a bit now.
@@RotarySMPCan't forget the two loose screws in the room! (at the time) 😂
@@jimurrata6785 That is us :)
Interesting but good music.
Thanks for the feedback on that Paul. Music is the hardest bit to get right.
Would love to see how you use this for the Z axis.
You will in a video soon. Basically the same as with X and Y, but you just drive it straight down into the part, until it reads Zero. Then zero Z in LinuxCNC. As long as the tool table is correctly set up, with all tools referenced off that same Zero height (I will have to go through them all and do that), then you are done.
@@RotarySMP Just don't really drive it straight down too far, they don't like that at all. I've had to give myself a pause from using touch off probes on home cnc. Didn't use it enough and when I did I found a new way to be stupid with it and break it.
@@mikeandhismachines Thanks for the tips Mike. It is no easy to add a change like this to the work flow without making some screw ups.
I have a haimer that is completely burnt to a crisp. Had a shop fire by arson recently. I tried contacting haimer, apparently arson isn’t a valid reason for warranty 😅
Sorry to hear that. That really sucks. I bet you had a life time of tools or more in there. My Dad was doing maintenance contracting in the 90's an had his van robbed. You can never replace some tools.
All clean and without an ultrasonic cleaner?
I'd only use that if completely disassembling it.
Does your buddy Luke fix indicators?
He has a lot of practice. I will point him to this comment, so he can respond.
I can both fix and destroy them :)
@@LCalleja Duane, if you email me (there is a link on the channel about page), I will put you in touch with Luke.
So what was the issue now?
It was jammed because the dial face was not level and jammed the needle.
Then you have to set the range of indication to the ball diameter. As there was a 4mm ball, we had to move to the edge of adjustment. Once I broke that ball, and replaced it with a 5mm one, we could move it to the center of it's range.
gifticators?
Yep. Luke is very generous with indicators.
Central European time? Central European SUMMER time, surely...
Good point.
Kinda surreal seeing a pair of hands on the workbench that don't belong to you tbh
Tell me about it. :)
Needs grey Scotchbrite and a black sweater.... 😉
@@jimurrata6785 True :)
