“But one does not go into the Dollar Tree for one item, and then leave with one item. You go in for one item and you leave with $30 worth of random crap you had no idea existed, or that you needed, before you went into the Dollar Tree.”
Truer words have never been spoken.

I think everyone who wishes should do inktober, it's a great way for artists at every level to expand their skills, collaborate, and share. Let the artist work out their legal issues. These type of issues should be worked out privately as the public usually doesn't have all the facts. Thanks for all that you do.

I have to say that your attitude is refreshing. I think we have become people who succumb to reacting and overreacting before all the facts are known. Your willingness to pause and wait till more is learned is admirable.

I might be going out on a limb here, but I think Inktober has become something larger than it's creator. It has certainly created a chapter in my yearly art sketchbook, and I can say, with certainty, that it has done the same for at least a couple (million) more people out there. It's inspiring, thought provoking, emotionally nuts, all the 10000 things that a movement can be. I don't think I could turn my back on it if I wanted to.. which I don't. I've been thinking about what I'm going to do for several months...
You know the saying about divorcing the art from the artist? It's sort of like that. Creators would never get anywhere if their personal lives dictated the results of their efforts.
BTW, nice necklace and earrings! I especially love the earrings since they are totally my style.

Why are folks having such a hard time with the fact that mans ideas were stolen and Jake profited from them. No one makes excuses about "it being a mistake" or giving anecdotes to explain theft when their things and ideas are taken. TH-cam will gladly give you a copyright strike if you play music or someone reports you for stealing content. ALL OF A SUDDEN folks want to act like it's not a big deal to take property. What Americans like to do most of all, is to ignore the taking, selling, and profiting, off others so that they can be happy. It's shameful really. This comment section is full of "We just want "OUR" Inktober that Jake gave to us!" Jake "gave" what he did not create but y'all are out here wanting to paint pretty pictures, both literally and figuratively, even if it's for the sake of THEFT and PROFIT. How GROSS!

Lisa Catlett I understand why you are angry. I really do. But first Jake Parker really did start Inktober. That’s not in dispute. Second, you can have so much faith in Alphonso Dunn as to take his word on the plagiarism accusation, that’s understandable, but even he cannot be sure. Jake Parker’s new book has not been published yet. You and I have not seen it. Alphonso Dunn hasn’t seen it either; his concern is based off a few stills and a 20 second video posted on Instagram.
I can see why you would feel so sympathetic to Alphonso Dunn’s position. But given the fact that none of us has seen Jake Parker’s book, I don’t understand how you can condemn those who enjoy Inktober and do not feel as though their participation is the same as supporting theft.
I’m am not dismissing the long, painful history of Black creatives not receiving credit, recognition, and payment for their work. I wish I wasn’t aware because it is so bloody painful, but I am. I do not support the idea that enjoying an artist’s work is somehow an endorsement of everything that artist has ever done. Do you really want your work to be judged by your entire life?
I’m not naive enough to contend that one’s work is solely judged on merit. I am willing to bet that you and I both have lived experiences that have taught us otherwise. I’m not even advocating that only the work should be considered.
My position is more nuanced. I would submit that some work is so great that it eclipses the artist. I also think though that every observer is going to have to determine where that line is for themselves.
It is quite possible to enjoy an art piece or participate in a festival while condemning bad behavior at the same time. I can like R. Kelly’s music while believing that his conduct with underage girls is criminal. I can think Mel Gibson is a terrible person and think that Apocalypto is sublime. Woody Allen is creepy but Match Point is a thoroughly enjoyable film. Even Bill Cosby’s contemptible and gross crimes do not mean his jokes weren’t well crafted and funny.
At some point the life of the creator can overshadow their work. Bill Cosby is like that for me. I recognize his talent but it isn’t enough that I can forget what he did and watch his comedy. I can however watch many of the films produced by Miramax and The Weinstein Company. I’m no long interested in any of Roseanne’s work though I found her first comedy special funny. I think Whoopi Goldberg is a supreme talent, and I am up for just about anything she does, but that blackface routine she wrote and performed with Ted Danson was cringey.
Loving Café Terrace at Night doesn’t mean that I think Vincent Van Gogh lead an exemplary life that I want to emulate. I happen to feel that Salvador Dalí was a mad genius when it came to sculpture, cannot stand the majority of his paintings, and frankly his private life makes me more than a little uncomfortable. I think you get what I mean.
All of the people who enjoy participating in Inktober are not endorsing artistic theft nor even Jake Parker as a man. They are just saying they like Inktober. I’m willing to bet a fair number of them do not even know who Jake Parker is.

I for one, will just keep creating and avoid it... creating, drawing, painting any form of art is my therapy... and I plan on continuing it no matter what... love your Halloween Haul... def hope you have more Halloween creations , crafts & cards planned... that is what I am filling my October with.

Thats what I was thinking as well when I heard that, and also chocked about the price of medication and that it might not be included in people’s health insurance. I live in a different corner of the world and luckily we have all health care and medication through our taxes. (Apart from a small fee to see the doctor of around $30, but never more than $170 in a year no matter how ill you are). Taxes are probably higher then in the US (we pay around 25-35% income tax depending on how much you earn). So high taxes but free healthcare, cheap child care/nursery and free education both for children and even university (after 18 you pay for your books).
Very off topic - but your tale just really made me think, and realise how different things can be.

I absolutely refuse to sign up to premium as TH-cam has enough money and they dont pay the majority content creators properly that deserve it over the influencers, children and narcissists that dominate their fees.
I would much rather contribute financially to the creators I love, Lindsay being my favourite. You don't know this but your content Lindsay has got me through some bad times in my life over the past few years and have rekindled my love of art. So thank you. XXX

I got so sick of the ads that I actually did sign up for a free month of premium yesterday. So maybe I won't renew and see what happens after that. If it is that easy for Lindsay to remove the ads, then maybe more people will also figure it out and it will stop being so onerous.

@@barbararegina5198 I don't want Lindsay to remove her ads though so she still gets revenue from them.
If premium works for you then keep it. I'm just grumpy and obviously getting old because I am getting more obstinate over things like that. I don't like the way TH-cam treats its creators and I don't want to give extra money on top of all the other streaming stuff I pay for.

I would say to not get involved in the drama. It’s not about Inktober, it’s about two grown men, one accusing the other of plagiarizing, not so much the content, but the layout. You can still do Inktober, though the name may be trademarked by Jake, the concept of drawing everyday, in October, can be called anything. I look forward to seeing your art.

I agree with you. I like doing “Inktober” for my own growth, and I have both Alfonso’s books which I bought when they first came out. I am not a trained Intellectual Property attorney, and only they can really present a fair case for this. Not the public! So, all the rest of these “problems” are not my business and I’ll leave them to the attorneys to present and judge’s deciding. Social media vigilante behavior isn’t right. It’s just like the trolls who use to post hate on anyone and everyone’s pages...now we’ve got vigilante bully’s telling us what we can and can’t do because they’ve come up with the verdict. No thank you. Not being bullied by vigilant trolls now.

Lisa Catlett Did you not watch Lindsay’s video? She does EXACTLY what you claim no one does: She told a story about her work being used without permission and how she handled it. In her case it led to a successful business arrangement.
Here’s another example: While I was in college a club I was working with ripped off my entire design for their magazine. They used my ideas and work without crediting me nor paying me as they were supposed to do. I chose to do nothing about it because they turned out dreck and the best part of their magazine was my design work. I didn’t want my name associated with poor quality so I let it go.
Lots of artists behave badly in myriad ways. Lots of people who found charities and events turn out to be unsavory people but guess what? Unsavory people can have good ideas and terrible people occasionally do good things.

I’ve gotten really into drawing and painting since quarantine started and was looking forward to participating in Inktober this year. I am distancing myself from both parties until they work it out. I don't need/want the drama. I will be doing art every day, but will not be putting any challenge name on it. There are tons of daily art challenges, in various media, so it would be easy enough to find daily prompts from another, if you have trouble coming up with ideas. I like peace, and my goals are to do something creative every day and improve. Getting pulled into someone else's drama gets in the way, and saps the joy out of it. So, although I had planned and prepared for the one challenge, I decided against it. I will be avoiding anything with that name on it this year, for the sake of peace and to maintain the joy and love of creating.

I hate when they spend five minutes using a product that was sent free of charge, and rave about how awesome it is. Then I stupidly purchase said products only to have them dry out or stop working after a couple days. The reviews should begin with " this is a product I have been working with for a couple weeks now....", Not unbox, unwrap, swatch, and yeah it's the best ever...please purchase and I will make a very, very small commission. That is a pet peeve of mine too, and you are the first person I have ever heard address it, Thank you!!!

Thank you for your thoughts on the Inktober issue. I watched the video describing what he felt was copying. In my efforts to improve I have purchased far to many books. What I found is that they all had the same elements. It wasn't until I picked up some used art textbooks that I realized that the reason they were all similar is because these have been instructional methods for many, many years. Who is right...I don't know. But I hope people will not make any artist feel they need to take a side. I will not stop following an artist for this reason. Thank you again for your countless hours of work. I wish you well.

I watched Alphonso’s video. At first I found odd that Jake Parker could copy someone else’s book but at the same time, it does look like he did that.
True that the all “learning how to ink” subject is universal but for me, this is the first book you publish, then comes the illustrations. Jake has been known for its inking skills for years, yet he never thought of publishing a book about the process?
In any case I agree that it would have been better to try to resolve the matter privately. All this story it’s hurting many companies that rely on Inktober.
I really wanted to participate this year, I was already choosing the subjects to draw and it’s a shame to ignore this great event for an unresolved and speculative matter. We shall see.

That could result in the book getting pulled or maybe a writer credit and royalties paid to mr dunn if there was a case. Even if Jake didnt want to address it the publisher would have to.

I took Inktober last year for the first time and I enjoyed it so much!! I had ups and downs, I got to use black ink marker and focused on making black & white art which is so much different to my style. I was committed to do it everyday and I am very proud of myself for actually doing it. Also, unintentionally all the things I love and inspire me came out through the themes. What I am trying to say is that I am no professional artist but for me it is important to challenge and grow on whatever interests me. I was really looking forward to Inktober this year. I don’t agree with people stealing other people’s work, no matter who they are. I am inclined to do it this year again because even though it was created by one person, it is what it is today due to the people who do it. It’s a challenge, it’s a skill developing process and it is a pity to hold people from becoming better on what they do. James Parker is not going to earn anything from me doing it but I am also scared from people accusing those who will do it. I guess I might do it silently BUT the reason I managed to complete the challenge is just because I had committed publicly. None of my friends are doing art (unfortunately) and they all told me that they were looking forward to my drawing of the day. Decisions decisions...

Yes Alphonso showed us the copied demo sketches! Not nice Jay Parker, tsk, tsk!! Alphonso put a lot of time into that book, and honest mistake would be one demo sketch, but more than three is not a mistake, Lindsay. He could’ve changed the shapes to illustrate shading or hatch marks, but the exact shape... oh no!! Not only the demo sketches, but the wording. It’s like Tim Holtz and the MISTI!

Concerning inktober, I agree with you. I have a handful of drawing instructional books, some from the 70’s, all showing roughly the same wording, layout, and concepts, using a variety of lines to give the illusion of volume on a 2-D surface. I felt that Alfonso did not have a strong enough argument to hold up in court. But since the two of them have made it a very public battle, it’s better to go with something like drawtober. The biggest issue with changing the # is there will not be one unifying hashtag for the whole month which was kind of the point. Some people are doing this tag, other people are doing that tag... it is a mess and a real shame.

Lindsay I saw very similar illustrations that were referred to by Mr. Dunn in old art instruction books that were published in 1989 and I have many older than that, containing variations or shading, stippling and other methods of achieving texture. I take no side as I don't know the whole story. That being said I will be doing Inktober with or without Jake's prompt list. I did the hand demonstration chart for Sign Language last year, I don't post most of my efforts because I don't make an income from my creative efforts and there fore I have the carefree attitude "I could care less if someone does or does not like what I create, I did not do it for anyone but me"; hope you participate in whatever way you choose and have fun. Both of these creators are adult men, let them settle their issue among themselves or with in the courts if needs be. In my opinion the public at large should mind their own business and continue with what ever they would have done prior to the public video accusation. Bravo on your position with Craftworld, hope your first posting Wednesday goes well and you have loads of fun. You seemed so happy and excited today, it was wonderful to see.

It was not si much the techniques but format and verbiage. Dunn made a logical progressive format to follow with clear concise instruction. This is what Parker copied in a manner that does not reference his type of art. If he showed his own process using the eons old drawing techniques it wouldn't have been an issue with Dunn . We shall have to wait and see. Too bad lawyers had to get involved instead of just speaking with the publisher first.

I recognized a lot of it from own own artistic journey over the past 4 years, and I've read no books from either party). We shall see what unfolds.

I'm so sick of people these days. I'm not taking any sides because 1. I don't have all the facts and 2. It's not my place. I try to support companies/individuals that have values similar to mine. Try is all I can do because I can't know these people well. I don't desire to form unhealthy loyalties to companies/individuals even if they share my values. I'm tired of all the condemnation lately. There are NO perfect, mistake free people! It's not just people calling out wrong actions. They are calling for harm to be done to people and I don't believe any one individual has the right to punish any other individual. Our legal system has things in place to make sure that very thing doesn't happen. Whether it's politicians, youtube beauty people or artists people are going crazy and it just makes me want to distance myself from everyone.

I'm still going to do inktober this year, or TRY to do them all, I never seem to manage to do all 31 days, but, I also believe that this has been handled badly. Going straight to youtube with a video without contacting Jake and allowing him to explain etc. is going to be damaging to BOTH parties here. The full book isn't even out yet, and I don't think we can make a judgement until it is. So many people have been up in arms on both sides here, and even when it is settled, many people will remember the headline but not the result. So it's damaged both artists reputations which is very unfortunate. I will wait until there is more information before I make any judgement because as you say, it could be a mistake or accident no one knows right now!!! And as to Dollar Tree, I am the same, I go in for 1 or 2 things and come out with $30 or $40 worth of stuff..... usually when they have new craft stuff in!!!!

Well, it might not be popular but, I'm going to do "Inktober" because I had decided Months ago that I was going to. Not because of whoever started it, but because I wanted the challenge of it, and because I wasn't able to participate last year because I didn't hear about it until it was almost over. I was going to buy the journal that Lindsay refered to from Viviva because I thought they were really neat and would hopefully keep me focused on the goal; even though the website says they are selling them, when I click the link, the page goes blank. 😝 So, I guess I'll have to make my own. Whatever. More crafty fun to be had for me!
So, participate or don't. It doesn't matter what's going on between those two artists out there somewhere, and it's Not Going To Effect Them whether you do or not. What MATTERS is that I make myself a better artist by challenging myself to DO BETTER, and More art.
If You don't want to do it in October, or use the prompts, don't. It doesn't matter to me. You do You, boo. That is all that Truely matters. All that pointing fingers, he said, he did - that's so grade school, and I'm WAY Too old for that nonsense. 😐

Firstly, congratulations with your new position at Craftworld!! I will definitely check it out. It's cool that so many magazine staff are involved in that. Crafty magazines are big here, and a big publisher recently decided to stop producing some very popular crafting titles, so the crafty community here is feeling the loss of that.
Yeah the time difference is fun...not lol. I'm from your neck of the woods but live in Scotland, so getting timing right for phone calls can be a bear. Teaching a class to start at 7 am? Beyond my early morning capabilities lol.
I appreciate that you wait until you use a product at least a few times before you review it. I trust your opinion and advice. I had gotten the Paul Ruben metallic watercolor set after your review. I considered it for a couple of months, and re-watched yours as well as a few other reviews on it, and am glad I waited to get something that I was confident that I'd be happy with. Being so new to watercolor, I need advice to ensure what I spend my budget on is going to make me happy and give me the results I want.
Yeah, I too wish the whole book plagiarizing scandal was handled privately. Now it's snowballed to Inktober and the vipers will be out and about with the venom ready in the art communities. I hope that wasn't the result wanted by Alphonso Dunn...because in today's climate with everyone fighting over everything, that's exactly what was going to happen. Now some people in the art community on both sides are turning insanely mean to each other, and the bullying and b.s. is ruining what was a great art challenge where people did amazing art and met amazing goals. And art - which is supposed to be an escape from all that. Effing ridiculous.
Thank you so much for addressing the ad additions TH-cam recently started. You are the only channel owner that I've seen so far who has even addressed it on video, let alone done something about it.

That said, I ABSOLUTELY love autumn candle smells - pumpkin spice, cinnamon anything, apple pie, toffee apple etc - I have a whole load at home - and same as they run towards December with the “Christmas” smells. I’ve ordered 1kg (2lb) of each Red Apple, Green Apple and Hot Cinnamon flavoured Jelly Belly jellybeans for my desk at work as I just love that fake apple pie flavour when you eat them all at once! Thanks for bringing up the whole Alfonso Dunn/Jake Parker thing. I just saw Dunns video yesterday, and I am really appalled that he went public using the word plagiarism without contacting Parker first. I know some
people have an opinion about Parker having an attitude, but still, to publicly accuse him like that without contacting him first, was a kind of back stabbing kind of thing to do. I know enough about book publishing to get Make didn't do the page layouts himself. I used to do this exact kind of work myself, for several book publishers, and only a couple of times, in my 35 years of doing freelance typesetting production, did I ever personally interact with an author. There are probably only a half dozen ways to arrange this content on a page, and the publishing company probably have Parker a couple of choices of layouts to approve, and he signed off on one, possibly innocently, not knowing it so closely resembling Dunns book. Anyway, I think doing this so publicly without even trying to contact Parker, was a really thoughtless way to do it.
I have tried (and failed) many times to do Inktober. I have never managed to do more than about 6 days of the month. But this year, I decided to plan ahead somewhat. I am on Jake's email list, and got the prompts early, and made a few pencil sketches and notes to myself about ideas of what I might draw for some of the days. I have recently started to draw or paint almost daily, so I think I might be able to succeed this year. This whole controversy thing this year has been ugly and cast a shadow over the whole thing, but I am going to try to ignore it and press ahead, making it a personal challenge just to myself, which is what it should be anyway, and hope those two work this out. Things are so ugly in the world now anyway, without dragging the art world into it too. Giving Jake the benefit of presumed innocence, I find it difficult to believe he would risk his reputation and do this on purpose.
Sorry, didn't mean to go on about this. Also wanted to say how dangerous dollar stores can be. I have gone in for a couple of things and spent $30 easily, on many occasions. I try to avoid shopping in them without at least a list, which usually doesn't stop me anyway, because in my mind, I hear the voice saying, it's only another dollar, and then, kaboom, my basket is full!
    Thanks for another great SatChat!

I love your scarves, and your hand thing, and you are never to old stickers! I think the inktober thing is probably/hopefully a mistake, and like you said - I can't see either party doing something like that on purpose. Unfortunately, because it was put in a public arena before being attempted to be resolved privately it has polarized people - something that we really can not afford at the moment. The art community is one of peoples safe bastions in this difficult pandemic time, I think we might need to go back to mindfully protecting it, peace is is so fragile.

I thought our prescriptions were expensive...it is £9.95 per item. I guess we should enjoy our NHS whilst we can! I'm always shocked at US medical costs, it blows my mind. Hope your daughter is ok. Love these chats, I learn so much.
