      @@youtubeadmin.8673 the crummy glue job on the inside of that Gibson is unsat. I’m super happy I saw that. Don’t see how that’s “dishonest”. And his guitars are handmade. I have the normal G-45 studio, without the weird side hole thingy, it’s got a pick-up in it, and it’s only 999, and I love it. It’s super lightweight, it sounds great, plays like a dream, and I like the fact that it’s super simple, no flashy shit. I also like that the satin finish is so light. It also smells super good…and it’s made in USA

      I agree. It's an aesthetic choice for sure. The lacquer is definitely a miss, but I don't think most are defenders of Gibson QC. I'm nowhere near a Gibson fanboy, but I don't think you need to rate how it looks unless it's drastically different. This looks like an acoustic, and I like the minimal flash.
      This might be a problem on a lesser company, but he does go out of his way to state that this is a Gibson, so there is value in that name. That is a truth that some people need to accept.
      Not saying it's right, but it is true.
      For me, someone looking to get into an acoustic. This is a an entry point for a Gibson that I'm actually looking forward to.

    This is one of the best series on the entire network. I know it breaks a lot of guitar enthusiast's hearts to see a guitar cut in half, but I think it's great. Here's my stupid analogy... Most intelligent folks I know go to a new restaurant, check out the restrooms (bathroom) to see if they are clean and well maintained, before they sit down to eat the food. I think it's extremely nice to know how much care went inside of my guitar, ("a place you can't see") before you shell out your hard earned pay !

    Now this is how an acoustic guitar should be reviewed! Outstanding! You might consider trying the drop-ball test on more than one spot on the top and back. If the ball falls where there's bracing, it might hold up fine, but in a spot with no bracing might be more telling. Thanks for your great work!

    One thing to note from a science guy who can’t help but notice things like this :) the graphs you show at the end when tallying up the different scores should not have a trend line tracing the bar peaks. This would make sense if you were graphing something over time, or if your categories had some logical, ascending or descending order to them; basically, measuring or even showing the degree of change over the x-axis isn’t necessary when your x-axis consists of items that could be placed in any order without affecting the overall results. Just wanted to throw that out there. Thanks again for making great content like this.

    I watched these videos after having already bought a Gibson G-45. Maybe you were very unlucky with the one you bought. Maybe I was very lucky with the one I bought. Mine has perfect intonation according to my Snark and my Polytune. Mine has no visible glue squeeze out. All the bracings reach the kerfing in mine as far as can be seen - and that is almost everywhere given the hole in the side. I can't feel any grit under the nitrocellulose.

    As always, this series opens eyeballs to truth. I have watched about 8 reviews of this guitar and in each one I walked away feeling "meh" about the sound, and your demo justified my feelings. I walked away from Gibson acoustics decades ago in favor of lesser known but better built and voiced brands at the typical Gibson price point.
    In this case, at this price, I could choose any upper end Yamaha, like the Red Label series that also comes with a hard case, and it would blow this G series out of the water.

      When I was looking for solid wood new guitar made in USA in the 1000 to 1500 price range, I generaly looked at Martins and Taylors . I did not like the tone or fit and finish of these and when I looked at the lable I was surprised to see they were all made in Mexico . I felt like these were really a ripp off .I knew Martin manufactured some of there lower end guitars that sold for around 600 which were great for that price point , but not Taylor . Any way I saw the Gibson J45 Avant Guarde on the wall and was blown away by the tone , fit and finish and price point of 1699 back in 2016 . I liked the tightness of the wallnut they used on the sides and neck which is unconventional but definitly gave it a unique voicing of its own . I was able to shop around and pick one up new with Gibson hard shell case , no flimsy gigbag for 1400. I also own a Takimine EF341c laminate sides are laminated maple . This guitar is probably one of the best stage guitars ever made . Its super stable , mine has a hole through back from dropping but always remains set up perfect . Also never feeds back . This guitar cost 1400 for a laminate guitar but worth every penny .

    Chris and Matt, I watched this review with great interest. I own a 2019 G-45 Studio, and noticed quite a few differences. My Studio has a walnut fretboard and bridge, both of which look way nicer than the ebony on the instrument you reviewed. The finish on my guitar is similarly applied, but it seems as though the workers took an extra moment to wipe the dust off mine. I am a fan of satin finished Gibsons, I own a pair of electrics with their satin laquer, but the quality is far better than the acoustic models. I can also appreciate the "tightness" of the tone. That doesn't mean "precise" voicing, it means that the guitar sounds strangled when it is new. My G-45 has gone through two full years of living in Nova Scotia, Canada and has experienced the extremes of the 4 seasons that we get here. Cold, cold winters than can be both damp and dry, sopping wet spring season, hot summers with humidity that is smothering, and autumns that are pretty much perfect and allow recovery and recharging. The original G-45 series came with hardshell Yorkville cases (Canadian made), that are pretty nice with decent latches and a wonderful lining. I had to purchase D'addario humidipacks though, but this isnt a big deal because I use them in all my instruments. The advantage of the hard case, matched with two full years of seasoning have allowed my guitar to open up a bit, and the tone has mellowed a bit. There isn't the full bass that a J-45 has, but the low frequencies are starting to come through, and the upper notes are more bell like than the guitar that was reviewed.
    The earlier G-45 Studio and Standards did come with on board pickups, either Fishman or LR Baggs, which allow them to be plugged in. The pickups are well placed, with the controls in the soundhole and batteries discreetly tucked inside out of sight.
    In closing, I must disclose that my Gibson G-45 did require an extensive setup 3 months into ownership. After fighting insanely high action and poor intonation, I sent it back to the store. One of the top luthiers in my area spent a fair amount of ltime and effort fixing the nut, shaving and adjusting the saddle so that it was in tune and proper height, steaming out a dent in the side of the fretboard that appeared after a few weeks of ownership and tidying up various boo-boos.
    What was a $1299 CAD guitar (new out of the box) became a $1550 guitar, (at warranty labor and parts prices). The tone of the guitar post repairs was really different, and it has improved over the two years of ownership. I also own a Martin D16GT, so I can appreciate a mid-priced product, but the Martin simply blows the Gibson away when it comes to fit and finish.
    Thanks for humouring me

      Nice reply, Bill. I too have a 2019 G-45 Studio model. It's a nice, solid guitar and the tone has only improved over the past couple of years. The hard case is nice, but I keep mine on a stand. I'm in Tennessee and I keep my office/guitar room around a constant 50% humidity, so no problems there. I purchased the guitar from Wildwood Guitars in Colorado for $999.00 and they did a fantastic job with the setup; I've had no problems at all with intonation, action, or anything else. The top is smooth with absolutely none of the problems with grit indicated in this video. This is the only Gibson guitar I own, but I think it's a good one, and it looks much better than the current iteration of the model. There may be better guitars for the money, but I would buy this one again. I don't, however, think I'd buy one of the current models.

    So glad you did this Chris! Ive been thinking seriously about purchasing this very model for awhile. The only reason Ive held off ordering one for this long, is because Ive played several Gibsons in the past, and the sound quality is not predictable at all on them. You can play 10 identical models, and out of those 10, you are going to find 1, maybe 2, that are absolute cannons, with the most loud and beautiful tone you could want. The rest, not so much. You are basically going to get 10 different sounds out of those 10 identical guitars. I'm a Martin guy, so Im pretty spoiled when it comes to how an acoustic guitar should sound. Lol. I really did want one of these. You saved me some money Brother. Thanks!

    I really like these videos! My only qualm is that your"entry level" reviews started above my guitar budget. 😋 I'd really love to see some reviews of even more budget guitars. At least a few...
    Specifically: A) one or two sub-$200 guitars from Amazon (or wherever, but hopefully something that sells well, as an example of what people are actually buying), so we can see if low cost really does equal crap or if they're actually decent/ok/fair purchases for a beginner or otherwise spendthrift. B) a few guitars in $200 - $400 as I think this is likely many folks actual entry level.
    I think a lot of people who don't know if they're going to like learning guitar aren't going to want to shell out over $400-$500, or even less, and some, frankly just can't afford to spend more, than this. My budget keeps me below $300. I just don't feel like I can justify it. Any more than that, for me, is a luxury and feels like something to be earned as a reward by finally learning how to actually play a little something.
    I don't think a more expensive instrument would necessarily even give someone more desire/push to learn, but rather, could be a larger point of buyers remorse if they don't progress as quickly as they hoped/imagined. Plus if you travel around with and beat up a cheap guitar it doesn't hurt like an expensive guitar would. Just my thoughts. My opinion could clash with others, but I don't know.
    But, if this series is aimed a little more at those who already play and are looking to move into a more expensive instrument, then they're on the right track. Very enjoyable to watch and listen to.

      If you're a rank beginner - ignore reviews. Buy a second hand Yamaha FG700s for $100 on FB/CL/Offer up and you're set. It's an unbeatable guitar for the money. If you're still playing every day after a year - skip the $500 range and buy a second hand $1000 guitar for $300-$500 to be your first great one, and then you'll figure the rest out from there.

    • @NeoRichardBlake
      @NeoRichardBlake 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@joshfoss7407 I beg to differ... a beginner, or anyone honestly, who ignores reviews does so to their detriment. They don't want something cheap... they want something inexpensive. (By that I mean still low cost, but getting the most value for their dollar possible. Learning on a crappy cheap instrument can be impossible in some cases, and therefore, off-putting to a beginner... so, low cost/high value.) Otherwise they're going to get sold on something they may regret. Something like this Gibson. They may know the brand, then a sales person will tell them how great it is (because salespeople gonna sell), and they'll be convinced, while an informed shopper will know to steer away from this one at this price or maybe altogether. (On name recognition alone, I doubt this guitar will ever fall in price to where its true usefulness would dictate. Maybe it should actually cost about half what it does. I haven't seen the inside of a guitar of lower cost like that, so maybe this is more in line with how they're constructed. I honestly don't know.
      As for your Yamaha suggestion, I see them range from just under $100 to over $500 for that very model you suggest (I only see them used, so I don't know what they cost new). Obviously, the right answer is you always buy the cheapest, if they're all the same, but cutting one of those up to see how the value compares to these is my point. If the Yamaha is cleaner, and better made, then even the higher $500 offers are going to be better than this Gibson, and the lower price offers are an even better deal. But how can I know that? How does an actual entry-level budget-priced guitar compare with these "entry-level" marketed guitars and even with more advanced models.
      I always shop around. For one person's good anecdote, there is usually a correspondingly bad anecdote, so I would never just buy this Yamaha because you say it's a good guitar. I don't know you or what you look for in a guitar. Yours is one opinion, and I like some data to my decisions. We may differ in our sound preference, so the more I know, the better my purchase decision will be.
      One last point of contention (mind you, this is all just for the sake of argument), but how reliable is a guitar that was $1000 new and goes for less than half its price on the used market? Used is where you see the real value perception of an instrument, and if its lost 50% or more of its value, there is a reason. Sometimes it can be as simple as just being a good guitar with no name recognition, in which case, that's a good score, but if it's a name brand... it should be holding its price better than that, so it's kind of worrisome if it gets to a price so low.
      The ultimate point still lies... reviews to flesh out that sort of knowledge are very helpful.

    • @stevescuba1978
      @stevescuba1978 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with Josh. Get a used Yamaha, have a knowledgable person look it over/do a setup, and play that thing. After you learn some stuff, you will know what you like and don't like, can feel what feels good or bad, and can actually give a guitar a test run. If you can play a guitar, then just set your budget and keep trying guitars in your budget until one "fits".
