I followed your steps, i managed to do a 6 piston, which are arranged 120 degree offset of 3 pairs. but when i get to render it, my counterweights are hollow, its like they are extruded in surface mode, but i extruded them in solid mode

Make sure your digram is single entity this you will extrude as solid..

Make sure your front plan is appear ..check grid as visible of front plan...
