A lot of Mecha anime fall into obscurity simply because people back then got tired of it so the current trend of Isekai will share the same fate as well.

    • @xirogs

Isekai probably won't end for a long time. The idea has more possibilities than mecha could ever.

Strange man in a strange world stories have been going strong for literally thousands of years. I don't think isekai will suffer anytime soon, because the genre is perfectly tailored to target a specific audience and they'll always have that market of tweens and teens who haven't overexposed to the genre yet, alongside the dumpster moths that gather around the trashfires of the genre. And because of the sheer amount of isekai pumped out, the studios still occasionally pop out a gem like Konosuba that even a grizzled pre-toonami era oldtaku like myself can find enjoyable.

holy shit, I was literally scheduling this into my watch list yesterday. this was the second anime I ever watched - after Record of Lodoss War - and me and the friend that introduced it to me actually charted how to get ahold of the movie when it released via the high seas.
I've wanted to make a video essay on this as soon as I possibly could, but I'm honestly impressed and amazed someone else managed to do it instead. I give you all the props in the world. Daigouji Gai was the first anime character to make me cry.

I watched this series on VHS, that I ordered from the Right Stuf paper catalog. My first viewing was the Dub. I've met and interviewed some of the folks who worked on the dub over the years. I later got to enjoy the sub when I got the dvd's. Both are great and worth a watch. And I'm happy to see that this show still has a flame going, older titles don't always make the jump to digital let alone streaming. "You get to Burning!" Great video

Gekiganger 3 is Fetter Robot 1:1, so it surprises me how in Super Robot V, wich featured both Badesico and Getter Robot, none if the Nadesico Characters mentioned the fact that they were fighting side by side with the real life Gekiganger. SRW V featured also Battleship Yanato, but no jokes about that either.

I find it funny that Yamada's death is so mundane but his death in Super Robot Wars are quite bombastic like every time he was going to die it's on a last stand scenario
And easily preventable too just give him a few kills before he died and he's good in future chapters hell in SRW W you don't even have to do anything to prevent his death

I think an anime that managed to capture the same spirit as Nadesico for me was Full Metal Panic. The series strikes a great balance between comedy and seriousness, just like its predecessor, and it also seems to have the same character designer as Nadesico.

Nadesico has one of the best English dubs ever. Like FLCL, a lot of time and effort was put into adapting as much of the humor as they could manage just to keep the show’s spirit. Is 100%? No, but ADV still did a great job and it really shows that they wanted to have some fun after Evangelion.

Now that I've had a chance to watch the video-
I was a young college freshman in 1999 watching the English dub of Nadesico on VHS. (Oh god, I'm so old now.) I missed most of the nuance then, but with an extra 25 years of weeb, I get the subtext, references and parody. You identified everything just right and did a great job covering why this was a real gem of a show.
I'll disagree (but understand), about the movie. The tonal shift and character change was too much for me. They changed Ruri from innocent-smartass to.... I'm not sure what. But they gutted the part of her personality that was so endearing. I skip the movie.
The english dub is an incredible gem of voice acting and one of the few dubs that I still enjoy without reservation. It has a who-who's list of the early English VAs, from the wild west that was anime dubbing before 2000. Everyone is having a blast, giving their all, and the translator clearly got a ton of latiuide. The jokes land so well - the sub is missing so much of the oddball humor.
The OP song is also a banger in the 90s style. Horns! Dramatic musical flares! Building tension with powerful resolution! I don't think I skipped the OP once during the rewatch. The ED song (Yurika's theme song) is not nearly as good but the singer is clearly giving 120%.
There's basically like two other videos on Nadesico for reviews. Good job Crusder. Thanks.
    (Megumi is best girl. BYE)

Nadesco, to me, seems to take most of its inspiration from G Gundam which was already sort of a more light-hearted and comedic take of that franchise's conventions. Hell one of the characters here looks awfully similar to Domon Kasshu, so either there's merit to this theory, or it's just a coincidence and I'm just letting the metal molecules in my tinfoil hat seep into my brain.

I so freaking love Martian Successor Nadesico! This is one of my most favorite comedy anime-I'm calling the original comedy-the romance and drama elements are there to further the comedic elements of the story. And if you've ever watched an anime or two, it's worth your time to check out out! Like the characters in the show with Gekigangar, there's a good reason for anyone to Geki-get-in (the damned robot, Shinji!) because you're going to have a good time.
Given its age, the dub is even decent enough-that's important for me because I'm legally blind and subtitles are hard for me to follow. I say "decent enough" because in places where it's kinda not amazing, it's kinda on purpose.

With that being said I do remember that I found myself decently enjoying the anime when I was younger even if I don't remember much about the plot aside from The Times when I remembered it when I played j but I definitely remembered not liking the movie like it was needlessly dark and needlessly edgy and it was trying way too hard to try to set up another storyline instead of just decently wrap up the previous season. In the end I do respect that this series has its place in the world but God do I dislike the Prince of darkness movie.

      1. I'm trying my best
      2. I still preferred the sub, but I agree the dub gives you something unique

Huh, guess the show was from the 90's, I was still in high School back then, or maybe late grade school. Think by the time I watched the movie, I forgot how the series ended.

Nadeshiko has some of the same issues as Cowboy Bebop, the arcs start to sag at the end (you can tell they are making a lot of it up as they go along). That said, the opening bits are REALLY GOOD, and the dub is one of the best (it's funnier, because the Japanese cast was pretty ordinary, while ADV basically dragged in their EVA cast in lieu of therapy. This makes Japanese original lines like "You mean episode 26 wasn't the last episode?" MUCH funnier (and then Tiffany Grant pops up voicing Ryoko) plus they carefully re-did all of Izumi's jokes so that they would be appropriately groan-worthy.
In addition to all the other classic Anime references, two of the episodes are basically Star Trek homages/parodies the "sub hunt" episode is basically, "Balance of Terror" from the original series (BOTH are lifting from "The Enemy Below"). And the episode where everyone is off their meds is VERY like several Next Generation Episodes, most closely "Cause and Effect".
Prince of Darkness was "Endless Eight" long before even Lucky Star. It took a flying high show and pretty much killed it dead (dead enough that it's obscure today).
Someday, we will get a show done by someone who grew up watching Nadesico, and it will be amazing, because they will have thought the whole thing out BEFORE they started.
Oh, and how could you leave out "That's just the boring name my parents gave me!! GAI DAIGOJI is the name that belongs to MY SOUL!"

Unpopular opinion but I liked the movie a lot. A little bit more than the series.
    I'm not exactly sure why.
ANyways,, thank you for the great video.

Or you can say the super robot show within the show, and the real mecha genre homeage in Nadesico (it's not a coincidence that the Nadesico resembles the White Base from Gundam, and the show did an entire idol singing episode in reference to Macross) and meta references/commentary on the mecha otaku cutlures as satirised via the entire Nadesico crew as well as the Lizards is a *gasp* deconstruction *gasp* of the mecha genre.
Yes, Nadesico is the *actual* deconstruction of the mecha genre of the 90s that 99% of western fans didn't get and then falsely attributed to EVA to (which was actually an otaku love letter to the mecha/tokusatsu genre from Anno).
