Thank you for helping me remember this gem of a show. Is it possible for you to review Shaman King, Rave Master, and Inuyasha? They are nostalgia nuggets to many anime watchers.
My husband and I own both the series and movie on dvd because its one of our favorites. We also got another hard-to-find on dvd as one of my xmas presents this year. Trinity Blood! So wish we could get more of that too. And more figures. Affordable figures. Last i checked the Abel statue was nearing $1000usd second hand. Ugh.
Can't believe I didn't realise the cat babes means there's catgirls in this show, until you pointed it out. Makes you realise how unimaginative most depictions of catgirls are
I guess I'm one of the few Escaflowne fans who saw the movie first, loved it immensely, then saw the TV show years later and still adored it just as much, and even enjoyed the manga for what it is. I honestly am very pleased that Escaflowne has a different story to tell and a different Gaia for Hitomi to enter, I think every entry had something worth exploring while still being true to the spirit of Escaflowne. Wouldn't have it any other way.
My parents had the entire box set of dvd's when I was a kid and also the movie too. I didn't really watch too much of it as a kid, but I watched the movie and I loved the soundtrack of both!
I will always be extremely grateful for the 4Kids version because that was my introduction to the show. My sister and I were so heartbroken it was cut short that we tracked down a VHS copy of the series. Can't go back to the 4Kids version now, of course, but I never would have found Escaflowne without it! Still such a great series, if a bit weird at the end, lol. Both it and the movie are gorgeous (though agreed about every other aspect of the movie).
I was out of anime for a long time & returned during the lockdowns to find this is a very popular genre. In the good old days, we had El Hazard, Magic Knight Rayearth & Escaflowne for the unnamed transported to another world genre. The choice of the Van actor for the second dub felt spot on as they captured the feeling of a boy having to become a man so much earlier than he had to.
It’s quite odd that there’s several mecha in a fantasy world. Escaflowne, magic knight rayearth, aura battler dunbine, war on geminar, maybe five star stories (the manga goes heavy on both sci fi and fantasy) and the one i think is definitely the coolest Panzer world galient
I thought I was crazy when I had these almost fever dream memories of escaflowne, having several different plots. As an american, I somehow got a bit of it all to... varying degrees of love. I have always been a fan of escaflowne and want to rewatch this series so much all over again. Thanks for the video! But you are an edgelord for that ending, though lol
I saw the film first, but it's what drew me to the series, which I was obsessed with as a teen. It still holds up well, 20+ years later. Like you say, the movie is GORGEOUS in a way that anime just isn't these days (which is a shame). The character designs from the anime def have that 90's shoujo romance style to them, but the movie designs are amazing, with Milerna being the only one that seemed to miss the essence of the original character. Also: Movie DILANDAU. Good lord, just about the only memorable anime psycho. I *did* like his more fleshed out backstory in the series though, but his insanity is more fun in the movie. Escaflowne is easily top 10 of all time for me.
Good rule of thumb: if Kanno did music for it, it is probably excellent. Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell SAC, Lodoss War, Macross Plus, Please Save My Earth. Even lesser-known gems like Turn A Gundam and Earth Girl Arjuna are very enjoyable.
One of my second favorite Anime, most of the english cast from my favorite anime is in this show, i remember watching Escaflowne on foxkids before it changed to the fox box. The movie is fantastic too
A little bit off topic, but I dream of a mecha fantasy game that is heavily inspired by Visions of Escaflowne to be made someday by Fromsoftware which would be amazing to see as a sort of tribute to this special gem.
I remember being tricked by the fox kids opening for this show. I thought there would be lots of action with giant robots not all this drama. But it's my favourite anime, I love it so much
I sometimes go back and rewatch this show it's a good movie I first watched it as a kid and always wished for a TV series but sadly they never made it into one
I owned the big blue dvd box set for the movie. impulse buy from best buy when i was super young. just looked cool. I remember about the first 5 minutes and thats it. I wonder if i ever even finished it because i hardly recognized any of the footage. Gonna have to rewatch it.
I totally forgot about the movie. I bought the box set of the second dub a while ago. I remember watching this show as a kid and then having it disappear on me. I really liked it and found it on TV during a trip to Canada. The episode was in the second half of the series and I was a little confused about what was going on.
I have seen both the serise and the movie when I was younger. I then got it on dvd and really enjoy it. I don't believe I own a copy of the movie, I think my friend bought it for us to watch as we often use to alternate buying anime at that time but I do have the sound track. I never considered what the movie might be like as a trilogy but doing so now I think you might be right that it could have worked. I guess one could pretend the movie is a single person's recount or telling of a legend that is different to the full truth if not just an AU. While I am not sure where to find the movie to watch, Crunchyroll has vision of Esclaflowne at least in my region. All in all I am really glad to see people talk about this anime because I too think along with a few other things I personally count as isekai (Digimon the first serise and Fushigi Yuugi - yes this is tecknically an isekai because they find a book and get sucked into another world) feel really special to me for various reasons despite their flaws.
Still have the show on dvd and its' soundtrack, have the collectors box of the movie, includes its soundtrack. I think the movie was just supposed to be a more serious take on the story and characters everyone was expected to know from the show. I enjoyed both. As a side note this anime helped get my then fiance, now wife, in to anime.
Escaflowne is so underrated! Its a legit classic. I didn't ever see the 4kids version. It doesn't fit there and music is awesome. They did the series dirty with it not available on streaming services.
Oh that is what it sounds like sub, K. I remember taking a while after watching the FOX version and then finally buying the complete series much later. Still watched it dubbed, very much enjoyed myself. Great series 👏
I didn't even realize there was a show. I just remember watching the movie back when i was probably way too young to be watching it on adult swim lmfao it helped get me into anime, though. 😂
Haha, I still have my DVDs ! And I had Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne on TV without censorship, with the original soundtrack and stellar dub. French privilege, I guess B)
There are more fun isekai that make light of common isekai tropes. Mainly Isekai Ojisan and Fabiniku. In both cases I’d probably recommend the manga over the anime (dinosaur scene had me cackling), but in the latter case it’s a very faithful adaption. Also Otome Heroine Survival goes hard, and Knights and Magic is kino.
Ah, I remember this show fondly. One of the first really cool animes I saw, and the anime that showed me just how much of a mess an anime series finale could be....Ah, whatever, I still want to go back and re-watch it. Also, this show and InuYasha are why I still sometimes call the isekai genre 'A Japanese Schoolgirl in King Arthur's Court.' A little in-joke for an audience of one...
I watched this show when I was way too young to do so… mom bought it on sale at a video store when I was in grade school. I still own that box set of the dub…

Cool to see you grow bro
Thank you for helping me remember this gem of a show. Is it possible for you to review Shaman King, Rave Master, and Inuyasha? They are nostalgia nuggets to many anime watchers.
My husband and I own both the series and movie on dvd because its one of our favorites. We also got another hard-to-find on dvd as one of my xmas presents this year. Trinity Blood! So wish we could get more of that too. And more figures. Affordable figures. Last i checked the Abel statue was nearing $1000usd second hand. Ugh.
Still have my transforming Esca made by yamato from eons ago when this released. truly a wonder.
End of Discussion. It IS! A precious relic that deserves to be appreciated.
YOOO THE LEGENDARY
It’s quite odd that there’s several mecha in a fantasy world. Escaflowne, magic knight rayearth, aura battler dunbine, war on geminar, maybe five star stories (the manga goes heavy on both sci fi and fantasy) and the one i think is definitely the coolest Panzer world galient
Escaflowne has such a banger of a soundtrack.
One of my first anime when I was younger under 10 ❤
Good rule of thumb: if Kanno did music for it, it is probably excellent. Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell SAC, Lodoss War, Macross Plus, Please Save My Earth. Even lesser-known gems like Turn A Gundam and Earth Girl Arjuna are very enjoyable.
Ah yiiissss escaflowne mentioned
One of my second favorite Anime, most of the english cast from my favorite anime is in this show, i remember watching Escaflowne on foxkids before it changed to the fox box. The movie is fantastic too
A little bit off topic, but I dream of a mecha fantasy game that is heavily inspired by Visions of Escaflowne to be made someday by Fromsoftware which would be amazing to see as a sort of tribute to this special gem.
I have to agree one of my all time favs
I remember being tricked by the fox kids opening for this show. I thought there would be lots of action with giant robots not all this drama. But it's my favourite anime, I love it so much
One of many true classics
One of the best OSTs ever written
I sometimes go back and rewatch this show it's a good movie I first watched it as a kid and always wished for a TV series but sadly they never made it into one
Never would have thought you d have loved this (betcha deep down it s for that amazing action)
I owned the big blue dvd box set for the movie. impulse buy from best buy when i was super young. just looked cool. I remember about the first 5 minutes and thats it. I wonder if i ever even finished it because i hardly recognized any of the footage. Gonna have to rewatch it.
My childhood! ^^ I loved the movie version art and music-wise. ^^

When i first heard the original OP, I was moved
Based. Now do Votoms. Or just rank all Yoko Kano anime I guess.
Some of those scenes were downright gorgeous
Still have the show on dvd and its' soundtrack, have the collectors box of the movie, includes its soundtrack. I think the movie was just supposed to be a more serious take on the story and characters everyone was expected to know from the show. I enjoyed both. As a side note this anime helped get my then fiance, now wife, in to anime.
Escaflowne is one of my favorite Isekai anime and I have the series on blu-ray. If you or someone you know hasn't watch it yet, please do so.
I'll go ahead and also put The 12 Kingdoms to be on the same level as Escaflowne even though it's technically unfinished.
Escaflowne is one of my favorite old classic anime. I personally like the English dubbed version but not the 4Kids version.
Escaflowne is so underrated! Its a legit classic. I didn't ever see the 4kids version. It doesn't fit there and music is awesome. They did the series dirty with it not available on streaming services.
Its crazy how much this series has affected my artstyle 30 years later.
Favorite show period. Had to sail the seven seas to get it after my DVD collection disappeared.
looks and sounds perfect
Oh that is what it sounds like sub, K. I remember taking a while after watching the FOX version and then finally buying the complete series much later. Still watched it dubbed, very much enjoyed myself. Great series 👏
Takes me back to my golden era of anime. I hate that I can't rewatch Escaflowne anywhere!
I didn't even realize there was a show. I just remember watching the movie back when i was probably way too young to be watching it on adult swim lmfao it helped get me into anime, though. 😂
This show, Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star and Rurouni Kenshin DEFINED my high school mind.
My favorite anime when I was a kid
Haha, I still have my DVDs !
And I had Cowboy Bebop and Escaflowne on TV without censorship, with the original soundtrack and stellar dub. French privilege, I guess B)
please do reincarnated as a vending machine next
I saw the first 2 or 3 episodes. I remember it being surprisingly boring for such an absurd premise.
@@Scrogan you could try The Dungeon of Black Company
@@Vieyram beh, didn’t enjoy it that much. Preferred “girl, scoop, evil eye” despite being edgy trash.
Arr, ye scurvy scallywag, have yer deadlights gone dim? There's always a way me hearty!
That ending has inspired me to become a pirate
Ah, I remember this show fondly. One of the first really cool animes I saw, and the anime that showed me just how much of a mess an anime series finale could be....Ah, whatever, I still want to go back and re-watch it. Also, this show and InuYasha are why I still sometimes call the isekai genre 'A Japanese Schoolgirl in King Arthur's Court.' A little in-joke for an audience of one...
"Now and then, Here and there" is also a nice old isekai, which is also very different from its modern counter parts.
I’ve never heard of that one. What’s it about?
@@LunaticTrumpet Suffering.
@@AzraelNewtype0079 ok it’s one of those anime that rips your heart out or is the main character suffering?
I watched this show when I was way too young to do so… mom bought it on sale at a video store when I was in grade school.
I still own that box set of the dub…
It appeals to everything I love and then some
