@@RexVergstrong Its one of the few times you actually notice the cinematography, pacing and editing in an anime, not just the animation. It just hits so hard. The 2011 hxh anime was ok but when you compare the same scenes in both versions you noticed how just hard the 1999 adaptation went with the material.

I actually saw the 4Kids dub first with the weird opening. Back then there were kids online who would comment about their favorite anime or their favorite characters and they would show the comments during the episodes so you got audience feedback along with it. It wasn't on tv for long though, dunno if it was the ratings or whatever. It was dropped from Fox Kids pretty quick. Crazy because all the feedback from kids seemed to be positive.

@@CulturedCrusaderok so basically the original Rayearth anime is directed by Hirano (one of the OGs from Gainax, he also directed Fight Iczer One and Netflix Baki). The OG Rayearth has the most beautiful animation ever, and season 1 is pretty great (if a little heavy on exposition at times due to turning a short manga into a 20 episode anime). Season 2 meanwhile is much more controversial because it is completely different from the manga, the manga authors literally asked Hirano to make it different as to not spoil the manga. So, Hirano turned Rayearth season 2 into a tribute to his old OVA Iczer One. Like Hirano has literally in interviews admitted the original characters he has added in season 2 are literally copy pasted of his Iczer characters no I am not joking.

I think the director was in the audience at the showing, and the reaction at the end was scattered applause, scattered booing, but mostly just silence and confusion. That being said, this was a great review, and I agree on nearly all accounts with your assessment. The second half of the show flies completely off the rails (I vaguely remember something about a "fate machine" that just comes out of nowhere, lol), but Escaflowne is a show that is really hard not to love. ....Also that 3 CD soundtrack lived in my car stereo and PC for about 10 years there.

It’s quite odd that there’s several mecha in a fantasy world. Escaflowne, magic knight rayearth, aura battler dunbine, war on geminar, maybe five star stories (the manga goes heavy on both sci fi and fantasy) and the one i think is definitely the coolest Panzer world galient

I thought I was crazy when I had these almost fever dream memories of escaflowne, having several different plots. As an american, I somehow got a bit of it all to... varying degrees of love. I have always been a fan of escaflowne and want to rewatch this series so much all over again. Thanks for the video! But you are an edgelord for that ending, though lol

I saw the film first, but it's what drew me to the series, which I was obsessed with as a teen. It still holds up well, 20+ years later. Like you say, the movie is GORGEOUS in a way that anime just isn't these days (which is a shame). The character designs from the anime def have that 90's shoujo romance style to them, but the movie designs are amazing, with Milerna being the only one that seemed to miss the essence of the original character.
Also: Movie DILANDAU. Good lord, just about the only memorable anime psycho. I *did* like his more fleshed out backstory in the series though, but his insanity is more fun in the movie.
Escaflowne is easily top 10 of all time for me.

Good rule of thumb: if Kanno did music for it, it is probably excellent. Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell SAC, Lodoss War, Macross Plus, Please Save My Earth. Even lesser-known gems like Turn A Gundam and Earth Girl Arjuna are very enjoyable.

A little bit off topic, but I dream of a mecha fantasy game that is heavily inspired by Visions of Escaflowne to be made someday by Fromsoftware which would be amazing to see as a sort of tribute to this special gem.

I totally forgot about the movie. I bought the box set of the second dub a while ago. I remember watching this show as a kid and then having it disappear on me. I really liked it and found it on TV during a trip to Canada. The episode was in the second half of the series and I was a little confused about what was going on.

I have seen both the serise and the movie when I was younger. I then got it on dvd and really enjoy it. I don't believe I own a copy of the movie, I think my friend bought it for us to watch as we often use to alternate buying anime at that time but I do have the sound track. I never considered what the movie might be like as a trilogy but doing so now I think you might be right that it could have worked. I guess one could pretend the movie is a single person's recount or telling of a legend that is different to the full truth if not just an AU.
While I am not sure where to find the movie to watch, Crunchyroll has vision of Esclaflowne at least in my region.
All in all I am really glad to see people talk about this anime because I too think along with a few other things I personally count as isekai (Digimon the first serise and Fushigi Yuugi - yes this is tecknically an isekai because they find a book and get sucked into another world) feel really special to me for various reasons despite their flaws.

Still have the show on dvd and its' soundtrack, have the collectors box of the movie, includes its soundtrack. I think the movie was just supposed to be a more serious take on the story and characters everyone was expected to know from the show. I enjoyed both. As a side note this anime helped get my then fiance, now wife, in to anime.

There are more fun isekai that make light of common isekai tropes. Mainly Isekai Ojisan and Fabiniku. In both cases I’d probably recommend the manga over the anime (dinosaur scene had me cackling), but in the latter case it’s a very faithful adaption. Also Otome Heroine Survival goes hard, and Knights and Magic is kino.

One of the first really cool animes I saw, and the anime that showed me just how much of a mess an anime series finale could be....Ah, whatever, I still want to go back and re-watch it. Also, this show and InuYasha are why I still sometimes call the isekai genre 'A Japanese Schoolgirl in King Arthur's Court.' A little in-joke for an audience of one...
