Pretty good review, i would personally have spent a lil bit extra time on the timeline explenation but thats just me. This is one of those games where ive always been lookin at and go ''oh wow i too like trench warfare as men rush a machine gun nest as a asthetic'' lol I do feel like story wise the devs DEFINETLY had a higher goal in a lot of ways but didnt have the expirienced writer / people to fully develop it into something better from a writing standpoint. Like i think the fact that you have a small area at the start where you get a chance to do some world building, and also world building via media (aka tv screen animations )showcases that they probably had a slightly higher aspiration, i liked the games look so much i potentially have the only leftover art cause i searched it in the days before the algorythm on google was fucked, now its just hard typing up the name for this game. Also i will say i do think they could have made the story work a bit more if they had it in such a way that the baron was planning on betraying the companies that hold power over him, manipulating them into giving him funds while he secretly is building his war breaking weapons away from their prying eyes, as for the people going along for 50 years thing, people can hold a grudge and if the war is being micro managed, just enough people would keep on dying and just the right kind of propaganda events would happen to keep the fires churning, however it is on the games failure to make these kind of events KNOWN to the player that can potentially justify the extension of the war. Anyways thanks for that small bit of info dump that Baron guy, funnily enough i think someone also mentioned him in their steam review for the game. Also might be something worth exploring in the future, maybe try contacting some of the devs of games like these, mostly cause interviews for smaller games that didnt do so well like this one are probably gonna get snuffed out at some point potentially. Anyways sorry for the wall of text, i feel more compelled to have a meaningfull comment on new content makers. Also Capitalism indeed bad
While not a “real” World War One game, for 2002, it does a decent job portraying the trench warfare part. In my heart of hearts I would have loved to do a much deeper dive into the alternate history however, I love history and I know history is a complicated matter which means I would have had to do substantial research into the post World War One era. I think you know this much better than I do, but this would mean an increase of production time and of budget. In the future, I might be able to do deeper historic analyses but for the time being, I’ll keep them short. There was clearly a vision behind this game, there are quite a couple of cool little details that help with the worldbuilding, I still love hearing random soldiers talking about stock. When I play a game like this, I always wonder, what happened? Surely, someone in the team must have seen at least some of the issues I’ve seen, so what happened? Which brings me to something you mentioned a bit later in your comment. I thought about trying to find and reach out to developers multiple times, but I just can’t shake off the feeling that no dev’s going to be interested in talking about 20-30 year old games with some rando on the internet. Plus honestly, I wouldn’t even know what to ask or how to verify people. Then again I would love to hear the story of the development of a game or of a company that’s now gone. With every game I review, I always try to look for information on the development, like I did in the Doom video. However it has to be at least somewhat interesting stuff. There’s no real point bringing up the development of a game if everything worked to plan. The GoG version comes with some artwork, like that which I’ve shown for the Kazak and Siberian soldiers and it’s pretty good. I’ve added a link at the bottom of the description to an old forum where a lot of artwork was posted, including a couple of things that should have been in Iron Storm 2, just in case you’ve missed some. Sadly, there never was an Iron Storm 2. Yeah, the ending really needed some more work, the direction you mentioned would have been much better. If micromanaged correctly maybe, but if the attrition rate would be too high that might lead to the end of the war and given just how many soldiers Anderson mows down, it might complicate things. No need to apologize for the length of the comment, it was fun answering and you did bring up some really good points, which helps a lot. I would ask when the next episode of Team Neighborhood is coming but I'm afraid of being shot, so... Good luck and thank you!
@@GamesfromthePast-Reviews I see someone's watched the Patreon video lol, its coming along we REALLY hope to have it out this year but its a hell episode for us to finish for some reason. OH HEY lookitdat, its the same forum thread i found the art on. As for confirming people and wether people want to talk about old projects, i feel like you might be suprised what people are willing to talk about, a lot of deep dives manage to always find someone willing to talk, and sending a email to the wrong person can be solved by just saying ''oh sorry i confused you with someone else'' as for finding them, from what i understand Moby Games is a excellent way to track down devs as well as other projects that you can use as a way to investigate and confirm and i believe they try to track down any contact info, so it might always be worth reaching out to the leads and asking them if they remember anything. And if anything people might just be flatterd that someone might take interested in a ''failed'' project like this. And like said the worst answer you can potentially get is no answer or them saying no. And as for how interesting it might be , i get that point but the problem is not all interesting things are said in interviews and especially if things were going bad from a leadership point, some of these lesser known studios can potentially have wild stories to tell because they arent documented like big wigs like Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Bioware etc Just look at Hbombers dive into the Oof sound (but tbf Talarico is a bit of a known name so more info on him ) As for diving deeper into the alt history, i feel what you presented was fine i was more reffering to the presentation a bit, i do however appreciate the use of Blitzkrieg footage for visualization. But like said this is my animator / editor brain speaking and i see a lot of simple ways to add a bit of flair as far as presentation goes.
Not just the Patreon video, I legit had a lot of fun watching all the Team Neighborhood videos and I like old-timey gangster stuff, so I loved the Bones Malone video. I know what you mean, sometimes a project just seems to pull out all the stop signs to complicate things for no apparent reason… plus there is always something happening in one’s life that can impact work. Either way, good luck and I hope it’s going to be smooth sailing from here on out. Moby Games is the first website I always check when looking for old reviews, so I might see if I can occasionally get some dev info and maybe get to ask a couple of questions. Just as you said what’s the worst that could happen? Wrong guy or no, that’s not that big of a deal. Thank you! I’ve seen a bit of the oof sound effect video and it looks interesting. There were a couple of things that might have needed some more time in over, I guess I shouldn’t rush some things.
@@GamesfromthePast-Reviews That's good to hear. And im glad to hear it cause i always do like seeing creators that god the extra mile, plus youtube does tend to reward longer form videos nowadays so theres also that incentive. Also if you like deep dives into games, id recommend a channel called MrEdders123 recently did a video on Myth III and has done a decent variety of games, even looks into the mods if theres a big enough community for it , or any of note
This is some incredible effort that you've put into this video, really great and in depth review I'm shocked you don't have more than half a million views already, this is really good.
Thank you so much and I'm really happy you enjoyed the video! Maybe some day I'll get to the point of having so many views but I think I have quite a few things that need improvement before getting there.
Came here for game review, somehow ended on a mix of National Geographic and History Channel 😂 I’m not disappointed, going the extra mile on the story, appreciate it!
played this game a long time ago, yet much of it is still burned into my memories. At the end of the game, when Lt "War Crimes" Anderson gets on the helecopter and you hear a pain grunt as it takes off? When i heard that i assumed it ment that Anderson had killed everyone on the helecopter and taken it for himself. but him getting knocked out and captured makes mre sense i supppose.
I like the idea of Anderson surviving his mission a lot more then him being knocked out, however given the themes of the game I think it's much more likely that something bad happened to him.
Love the premise, but the gameplay wasn't great. A better dev with a bigger budget should revisit this concept. Just keep it away from: EA, Activision Blizzard, Ubisoft, WB Games, etc.
@GamesfromthePast-Reviews, Nightdive Studios, maybe. I'd like to see them rerelease: Marathon 1&2, ZPC, and Expert PS1 1st. But yeah, it'd be nice to see Nightdive remaster FPS games from the 2000s too. Pretty much my favorite decade of FPS games. They could try and remake Shellshock 2 Blood Trails as well. Neat concept, bad game.
@@Gruntvc Out of the Nightdive remasters I've played so far I haven't been disappointed, so they might pull it off. Nightdive did remaster the first Doom so it would be appropriate for them to remake Marathon. Never heard of Shellshock but it seems interesting.
@GamesfromthePast-Reviews, Still waiting for the Sin Gold Remaster. Same for Shogo Mobile Armor Division. Yeah, can't even buy Marathon except for the 1st one that was remastered for Xbox 360. It is backwards compatible on Xbox One X and Xbox Series X. There's two Shellshock games. The 1st was made by Guerilla Games before they hit it big with Killzone. Shellshock 2 was made by what remained of Core Design. It and Rogue Warrior was how they went out. Shellshock 2 did try to mix horror into a Vietnam War setting. Can't think of anything else that tried that.
