What I've found USUALLY, like on Rotten Tomatoes, if the critics vs audience gap is HUGE, if it leans Critics it means one thing FORM OVER FUNCTION, and vice versa. Form being, it's either political, pretentious, and or artsy for the sake of being artsy. Where the other is usually, just silly fun, no in your face messaging, just fun. That's my trick to reading Rotten Tomato scores. Majority of the time it pans out that way. Rarely will I find a critics high audience low movie good. Unless I'm going into a movie for "pretentiousness" like a Wes Andersen flick, then I'll usually side with the Audience. Sometimes I want to feel like a fancy boy and other times a silly boy.

Season 1 was so good. The writing was superb. But with every season the writing has gotten worse with season 4 being garbage. I'm with Chris, I still watched because I'm a fan of the characters, especially Homelander. I know season 5 will most likely be trash because now the show is violence, gore, and over the top sexual stuff for shock value and they keep trying to one up the previous. My expectations are so low now and I just hope the series finale has a good ending.

That's what I wrote in my IMDB review. Like the Vought politics was great, the "we're creating super villains, so we can sell our heroes to fight them" was actually really interesting. The whole "Cops target minorities" story line in season 3 was annoying. The neutering of Starlight was annoying. And I'm just either getting too old, but the crass without substance is annoying. Really episode one, starts with "Antman" going inside another man's meatus, then being tricked to expand while halfway down? COOL, not. This is why I didn't like that Cartoon superhero show they had. I don't mind trash, but sell it as trash, don't sell trash as high art. I like a good Troma flick every once in a while, but it's not pretending to be Sophie's Choice. AND YES, I would watch a Troma version of Sophie's Choice.

I feel the same way as Chris. The characters are still pretty goid, and the show is leagues above others in terms of writing and acting. The part that kept knocking me out of the story was how on the nose the political references were.
It made things too specific so it felt like it wasn't just characters dealing with the dangers of certain types of political ideologies or wrestling with political questions, but instead felt like the writers were saying, "This EXACT GROUP of people who exist right now are responsible for the fall of the country in this story."
I'm not a conservative or a 45 supporter but the references were TOO specific. Also, overlaying modern political figures or sensibilities onto preexisting characters (like Homelander) were sometimes at ODDS with the character's personality and gave confusing messages.

There's so much competition and choice when it comes to entertainment that Hollywood doesn't have the same near monopoly it once did. Which means that shows/films that have disdain for me or want to lecture me don't get my attention any longer. On a related note, according to a recent report by FilmLA, productions are WAY down and unemployment in Hollywood is now up to 16%, or as one guy put it, only 8% lower than the unemployment rate during the Great Depression. It's too bad the young people in Hollywood don't know much about US history. This is what happened to the auto industry in America.
The auto ind. grew exponentially in the 60s and 70s. By the time the 80s rolled around, the auto workers unions were wielding a lot of power. They managed to negotiate some pretty generous contracts over the years and went on strike a few times to demonstrate how much leverage they had. Until eventually, the auto companies started out sourcing and automating away jobs.
Hollywood can't even comprehend the possibility that they could turn into the next Detroit. The Writers and Actors Guild overplayed their hand. Now, they are starting to feel the consequences of that decision. Eventually, people who want to produce good movies and TV are going to setup shop in a different part of the country.

This show has quickly gone from having a good/funny premise (and providing an interesting social-critique) while subvert-exploring the superhero mythos (like the original Watchmen) to quickly becoming its own worst (and unintentionally-ironic) self-serving (and then ideo-devolved) enemy as it increasingly appears to lack a better understanding of the NUANCE of social-criticism, which should revolve around including a critique of ALL/EVERYTHING.
......where to NOT do so (and increasingly picking a side instead) ironically just results in something more akin to shameless (and biased while self-serving) propaganda (even if simply due to cluelessness while lacking much self-awareness) like SO MANY other badly (or cluelessly?) ideo-subverted (and then devolved) properties nowadays unfortunately.
It also appears to be coasting on easy (and desperate) edge-lordery while it now so over-tries to out gross and debach itself every week.
.....and it strays further from its source like a LOT of 're-imagined' or co-opted properties nowadays while shamelessly stretching itself out for a longer 'quantity over quality' ongoing-rental subscription.
It's still far better than Star Wars : Communist Space Witch Lesbian Victims in Cos-play though but not as good as House of the Dragon (which has its own problems.....like a lack of noble/moral Starks to empathise with ......and/or to counteract all the self-serving victims.....of themselves mostly).

They also had people on the right calling out the left, vs a more neutral standpoint, so it didn't really have the effectiveness it previously had and looked more like right wing anti-left propaganda. There were some hits and misses in the season, and I agree with Chris that the actors/actresses did great, but I look forward to the conclusion of everything in the next season. Especially if they are bringing back Soldier Boy, I think it will be great. Also nice to see A-Train slowly making a redemption arc. 1st season was the best and now it's just way too cringe to enjoy. I'm just not into the Eric's vision of what he thinks is entertainment/ propaganda I'm gonna miss the 5th season. Way too gross on many levels for me.
