    Hello guys!
Thank you so much for watching this video!
I wanted to do this really quick video just to familiarize you with some equipment & a procedure that we do as nurses!!
When I first started as a nurse, I was terrified of this procedure, but just knowing the equipment & needed supplies helped me a lot.
I have come to love the relief that our patients can have from having this inserted & relieving the pressure from their abdomen.
I do have to say, I did not have the best supplies to create this video, but I still think that the tips from this video will help you out a lot as you go through nursing school or work on your own job :)
If you did indeed like this video, please let me know by giving it a "thumbs up" & posting a comment to let me know!!
I really look forward to hearing from you soon!
    With much Love,
    - Caroline

The best bedside confirmation of NG tube placement is to aspirate gastric contents and measure the pH! Just learnt this last semester :)

The whoosh test (when you insert air and listen) is banned in the UK to confirm NG tube placement.

That's what we learned too, but in her defense...my instructors told us that the way she showed used to be common practice among nurses in many hospitals, but tests have shown it isn't always very accurate so now things are starting to switch over.

Caroline Caroline Caroline! I just want to say that you are the sweetest thing and I'm so encouraged by your heart and videos. So be encouraged yourself because you are helping and touching so many lives with your heart to teach and help others. I contacted you like 2 years ago I think and you were kind enough to email me back and encourage me. I'm graduating in June and I wish I had you as a fellow classmate! Keep the videos coming because a lot of nursing school teachers do not understand what students truly need and feel. God bless!

Excellent as always! I love these because I feel like you're right there precepting with me! Can you do a skills video in the future about piggybacking IV's? I watched your IV skills video before and was hoping for one about if the patient gets more than 1 IV bag. Also how to disconnect or discontinue IV's when they start beeping and just any helpful hints about IV's because they really scare me! Thank you so much Caroline!

I was a patient who had to have a NG Tube inserted this past June 21st due to what the ER thought was a partial small bowel obstruction, which actually was later diagnosed as my small bowel had just collapsed, there was no obstruction. I have to say Empowern, I wish you had done the procedure. They had me drink warm water, and I felt that tube going through the nasal area right as she started putting it in. I would say to patients, try ice cold water, it helps to numb the throat a little more as the tube goes in. And this is a great video, wish I can meet empower in person someday ;) what a great nurse !

***** ya I am doing better. I had to have a x ray done this morning where I had to take Barium and they monitored the barium entering the stomach and small intestine, They said with a partial small bowl obstruction that it might take 2 or 3 hours for the test to be done, but it only took 25 minutes.... I guess that NG Tube was just another name for a Internal Roto Rooter LOL .... I am guessing everything is fine seeing as I was done so fast.

To verify the placement of the tube you can also mesure the pH level of the liquid with the syringe, if it's acid it's on the stomach and if it's basic it's on the lungs. Also you can look at the color of the liquid. (sorry if my english is not so good...) :)

    • @empowern
      @empowern  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

***** Hi Jeanne! Your english is fine! Yes the PH is also a way to verify placement! I learned this in Nursing School... but the places that I have worked at seem to always want an x-ray to be sure.
Not exactly sure why that is...
      Thanks for the comment though!!

      Hi Tomasz,
Honestly, I was never taught that... but maybe it is because we are usually attaching suction as soon as placement is confirmed.... either way, it does make sense to draw back the air so that you are not adding to the volume in the stomach!

It is really nice to hear from you!
In this video I'm wearing grey's anatomy scrubs. I really like them, they are very soft & attractive.
Some other brands that I like are Jaanuu, they are a new company, but they sent me some scrubs to try out & I'm definitely a fan. They are super cute & comfy as well.
I also wear cherokee, they are reasonably priced & extremely functional.
      I hope this helps!!

      Blessing Emenyonu Hi Blessing!
Honestly the only thing that helped me feel more comfortable for skill checkoffs was to practice the skill over & over again....
These skills are not common sense and every movement is important. So the more you do it, the better you will do when your professors are watching you!
      I hope this helps!!

I've personally have had this procedure done to me, three times, not fun! Haha. I remember once a nurse was doing the procedure and he did f give me water, when I asked for it he refused, saying something like (it was years ago) the water would not be helpful, it sends the tube down wrong. Would you know why he wouldn't give me water? I know your not psychic but maybe a coworker doesn't use water, everyone had the own technique. Great video!!!

      MissGeeklyChic♥ Hi Love!
I'm sorry to hear that you had to have this procedure done!
I'm honestly not sure though... this is just the way I was taught.
I have seen other people not use water & it also works....
But my textbook from nursing school did say to use water...
      I hope this helps!

How can you tell w/o an xray that the tube is positioned in the lung area and what can you do to fix it? Thanks

    • @empowern
      @empowern  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Selene0017 Hi Selene!
You should get gastric liquid... which you are supposed to test the ph to make sure that indeed it is gastric juices. But ever since I have been a nurse, the preferred confirmation route has been the x-ray.
If it is not in the right place, you have to start over from the start... unless someone else knows better than me... which is very possible :D
      I hope this helps!!

Sharp Life how would an air bolus cause an embolism? Think about what a simple burp is.

Corey C not the same thing at all. It’s actually been a proven thing sadly it’s happened. It’s artificial and going ya other way and if your not fully on the stomach it presses the air into the aorta

      Hi Owen,
I agree, that this procedure is not comfortable, but you know our patients that need this, are usually feeling really really bad & this usually makes them feel better in the long run :)

Unfortunately yes... it has happened to me twice.
It is really important for the patient to swallow the water while inserting... otherwise it is easy for it to go in the lungs. Which is why the chest x-ray to verify placement is so important.
      I hope this helps!!

+EmpoweRN Really? Thats the opposite of what i've ever learned. You insert, test tummy content and check for acid, no recent eating, a nurse will use a stethoscope. I have NEVER heard of a patient swallowing fluid on insertion. I could be wrong but isn't that the worst case scenario?
