    Love this. Not only the recipe; I love that you have your mom on and the way you interact together. Watching generations of women cook together is both prosaic and beautiful. Thank you for sharing.

      Woohoo, halva for breakfast sounds amazing, we used to do that on festivals. Might make it for my kids tomorrow. Let me know how the baking from the book goes.

    Nothing beats warm halwa, it's just so comforting. I've actually never seen it made with water, only milk so i'll have to try this out. I have so many memories of watching my mum make it as well - It would always be my job to stir it. One of my grandma's likes to put in some vanilla extract which is delicious but personally I feel like it overpowers the cardamom flavor which to me is what halwa is all about. One of my aunts also adds some orange zest to hers which adds a lovely brightness.

    Hi Chetna... loved to see the video... Suji ka halawa has such a lot of memories with it.. It just plain makes one nostalgic. The way my mum makes it is a bit different though. She dry roasts the suji. Then roasts it a bit more with ghee (same like your mum does). Then she adds hot milk to it. after the suji is cooked, covered with lid she adds sugar to it directly. needs to be stirred to mix well and no lumps are formed. lastly a bit of steaming with lid on and final touch is if you like add chopped ripe banana to it. we also make it with mango pulp.only amount of sugar that goes in will be lesser in proportion to sugar in the mango pulp. finally add some chopped almonds and then dig.... will try this syrup method and let you know. sorry for a long comment... couldn't resist....

    Wow!! Thank you so much Chetna! What a wonderful way to make suji (or soji as we call it). Seeing you and your mum make this heavenly sweet dish, just reminded me of my Mum who also used to make this and it was so delicious, we used to enjoy after a meal as a dessert. Your recipe and method is just great. I will try it.

    Hey Chetna, just discovered your channel and watching all your videos lol.
    I'm from Trinidad and we have that here too during Divali. It's called mahunbog/persad and we make it with milk and add raisins. Some people add fruits like apple or grape and when it's made in large quantities they make it with flour because it's cheaper.
    My mom makes hers with cream of wheat and condensed milk because she's decadent like that.
    Love your channel, your calm energy and your gorgeous hair. Oh your mom is fabulous too. 😊

    Is this related to the Greek/Balkan halva? I've only seen denser halva, kinda looks like nougat but has a crumbly texture. I think the Greek version is made from sesame paste instead of semolina (?)

    • @delfin7461
      @delfin7461 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no, it's like what Americans call cream of wheat, but not as runny, it's the consistency of thick mashed potatoes.. it's to die for... what you are talking about is halava, and yeah it's made from sesame paste or sunflower seeds or any seed really
      think of this as a very sweet warm cereal

    • @FoodwithChetna
      @FoodwithChetna  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No this is very different to the greek halva, this is an Indian dessert and totally delicious!

    • @FoodwithChetna
      @FoodwithChetna  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @delfin7461
      @delfin7461 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      thanks.. and I have made it with the Czech equivalent of "cream of wheat' with some honey, spices and raisins... super yummy
