Cheonggyecheon (Hangul: 청계천, Korean pronunciation: [t͡ʃʰʌŋ.gje.t͡ʃʰʌn]) is a 10.9-kilometre-long (6.8 mi), modern public recreation space in downtown Seoul, South Korea. The massive urban renewal project is on the site of a stream that flowed before the rapid post-war economic development caused it to be covered by transportation infrastructure. The $900 million project initially attracted much public criticism but, since opening in 2005, has become popular among residents and tourists.
The stream was opened to the public in September 2005 and was lauded as a major success in urban renewal and beautification. However, there was considerable opposition from the previous mayoral administration of Goh Kun, which feared gentrification of the adjacent areas that housed many shops and small businesses in the machine trades.
Creating an environment with clean water and natural habitats was the most significant achievement of the project. Species of fish, birds, and insects have increased significantly as a result of the stream excavation.[6] The stream helps to cool down the temperature on the nearby areas by 3.6 °C on average versus other parts of Seoul.[7] The number of vehicles entering downtown Seoul has decreased by 2.3%, with an increasing number of users of buses (by 1.4%) and subways (by 4.3%: a daily average of 430,000 people) as a result of the demolition of the two heavily used roads. This has a positive influence by improving the atmospheric environment in the region.
The project attempted to promote the urban economy through amplifying urban infrastructure for a competitive city in the business and industrial area centered on the stream. The urban renewal project was the catalyst of revitalization in downtown Seoul. Cheonggyecheon became a centre for cultural and economic activities.
Cheonggyecheon restoration work brought balance to the areas south and north of the stream. During the modernization era, downtown Seoul was divided into two parts, north-south, based on their features and function. The restoration helped to join these parts to create a new urban structure connecting the cultural and environmental resources in northern and southern areas of the stream (Hwang n.d.), resulting in a balanced and sustainable development of northern and southern areas of the Han River.
The project sped up traffic around the city when the motorway was removed. It has been cited as a real-life example of Braess' paradox.

I visited South Korea in 1986 .. A business.. visit 39 years ago. She was very very beautiful with her wonderful Korean people. Before LG was founded .. I spent my most beautiful days in Seoul, Busan and Jeju Island. I spent six more than wonderful months .. I have many friends in Seoul .. Sure, they are now at the end of their life .. I hope to visit it .. After Covid 19 .. in the summer . Mr. Nathan, you return that time to us, but not Seoul, in which you lived, it is now the land of paradise. God bless Korea. Hi Nathan! So I just want to say thank you for videos. This year, due to the pendemic I faced a lot of mental health issues due to school, my family, and personal problems so I was feeling anxious and depressed for a while. My dream is to go to Korea and do something big in the acting industry (I'm a South African) and general entertainment industry. I say all of that to say; your videos really calm me down and have been an escape mechanism for me the past 6 months. Just watching them and imagining how it will be when I get there and how everything will get better and will Be better even though I'm facing troubles now. I don't even know how I found this channel but it was exactly what I was looking for and what I needed. Essentially you've been a blessing to me this year and I hope you get more followers and keep growing your channel. Who knows maybe one day I'll be passing by in one of your videos. I hope God blesses you in all aspects of your life. Have a good day

Someone wrote this stream was dug.
But this stream was not artificially dug.
It was natural stream and maintained administratively from Joseon(Chosun) dynasty, 1406.
It was only covered partially and used as road from 1958 to 2003.
When even covered, the stream was flowed.
The stream rises from Baekwoondong valley of Bukak, the northern mountain of Seoul.
Thesedays some portion of the water is from subway tunnel but not sewage water.
The city has another sewage system to keep the water of this stream clean..

@@kimeva_civa As the city had been changed, only the bank of the stream was changed.
It is same at Han river.
      Is it to blame?
No one says the stream is natural now. It is just urban stream to be maintained continuously.
So called thief major is better than woman-assaulter, isn't it? It is real and unique shameful case of your political stand. Isn't it?ㅋ.
Though you try to distort, the stream was there since ancient time, and only people began to live around there.

    • @new1st569
      @new1st569 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@kimeva_civa If say, even plaza in front of Kyeongbok Palace, 'Kwanghwamun Plaza', is fooling distortion of history and nature. And do you have any evidence to prove the mayor's stealing from the reconstruction of the stream? The mayor's corruption was of his national presidency, not there.
A tap water is a sort of modernized way of maintenance, tolerated by modern people, excepting cynicalist.
