  • Sample size determination is the act used in research of selecting the number of observations to include in a statistical sample. The sample size is an important feature of any empirical study in which the goal is to make inferences about a population from a sample. In practice, the sample size used in a study is usually determined based on the cost, time, or convenience of collecting the data. Therefore we calculate minimum sample size using statistical procedure.

    Hi Ahshanul,
    For the ICC, how do you determine the ICC if there are no previous national survey or pilot study. Is there a place for assuming a conservative value? If yes, what should guide in this decision?

    Hi, I have a cross-sectional study with four groups (IV) and a few outcome variables that have binary, continuous, and ordinal values (DV). What formula should I use to do the sample size calculation?

    • @ahshanulstatistician6644
      @ahshanulstatistician6644  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It binary, then Proportion, If ordinal then also proportion but have to used as multiple outcome, if continuous the standard deviation

    Good Presentation! Could you please explain how and where did you obtain the value of ICC? If the calculated sample size is greater than what we have (particularly in secondary data, where we have no control over data), what would be best approach to conclude sample size?

    • @ahshanulstatistician6644
      @ahshanulstatistician6644  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you. Generally, icc was calculated from national survey data or other findings. otherwise from pilot study.

      Thank you for your reply. I think we cannot use the ICC value we obtained by assessing Inter-rater reliability of a tool in a psychometric study (e.g., DQoL used to measure quality of life ), Can we? Or, do we need to consider the value of ICC, where our independent (e.g., organizational context) and dependent variable of interest (e.g., quality of life) are taken into account? Please suggest.
      In the case, where no such studies are identified which looked into association of organizational context with quality of life what would be the best approach to get the value of ICC. Please advise.

      Thank you. ICC will be needed for calculating sample size of cluster sampling.
      In this situation we use icc from other previous study or from pilot study.

    desired precision corresponds to beta value??

    • @ahshanulstatistician6644
      @ahshanulstatistician6644  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you.
      beta value is used to calculate sample size for those study based on hypothesis testing.
      and precision is used to estimate a prevalence.

    why did you choose standard deviation as 1.20? is it just an assumption? or it is considered as standard value to get a certain effect?
