Radiohead + Lana Del Rey Get Free/Creep Comparison

  • A note for note comparison breaking down the chorus of both songs. Each melody was first played into music editing software to determine visual note lengths. These lengths were then put into video editing software to analyse both songs side by side. I'm a big fan of both artists and wanted to see for myself how both songs compared.

    Not even a Lana fan, but I feel that this is pure coincidence. Also, Radiohead's "Creep" isn't the most original song out there. Very similar to "The Air That I Breathe."

      Jonah Drake even if radiohead has stolen hammond's song, that has nothing to do with Radiohead suing lana, specially since Radiohead and hammond are both Happy about both songs, It was their mánagers Who fought just to get money, they had nothing to do

      Nobody thought they are the same song before January 2018 although there are many people who love heard it. I guess they are gonna sue Lana Del Rey for ripping-off the band name Lana Del Rey Diohead. The album Lust for Life was released in July 2017. Nobdoy noticed anything. If you rip-off somebody people will notice it immediately.

      OK, here we are talking about rich people's problems. Lana has millions and Radiohead has millions. They are just rich people with rich problems. I love Mariah Carey more than Michael Jackson but I don't think Mariah should sue Michael (or people who own the song You're Not Alone) for ripping-off Hero which was released two years BEFORE You're not alone. Quite similar but a different song. Like "Hey You" by Kim Wilde sounds like a Depeche Mode song. Didn't people laught at the relative of Spirit when they sued Zeppelin even before the court said what they decided? It is very rude to sue someone because it has something same, especially what I don't really own. I wouldn't mind if Radiohead would use some parts of "White Mustang".
      The world would be a happier place if people wouldn't sue all the time each others. And also if Gene Simmons would not bother us with his stupid trademark applications. He trademarked "?enis" which is not even a word.

    WHAT I NEED PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND: As an artist you will probably come up with at least ONE or TWO ideas of your own in your entire career. Everything else will be heavily inspired by someone or something. Most of art is just copying and redoing/making it your own which is exactly what Lana did. If you listen to the greats at the same time you created your album, you would unconsciously be drawn to the aspects that sound similar to the music that made history. If she did copy this sound I can garuntee it wasn't on purpose.

      You are spot on with your take on being an original artist Vs. inspiration. That said, I think both are too similar to discount some direct plagiarism: vocally and melodically. Of course Radiohead plagiarised the Hollies ,"All the Air that I breathe" , for the their song.

    The main reason this is controversial is the chord sequence used, it is extremely unusual to use this sort of sequence as it’s not entirely diatonic and switches between the major and minor variations of each chord for example G - B - C - C Minor

    • @hihungryimcam
      @hihungryimcam ปีที่แล้ว +7

      But it really isn’t extremely unusual. The I-III-IV-iv progression has been used in countless songs. I use it when casually messing around on my guitar even though I rarely ever think of Creep. Non-diatonic chords in general are used very often. I think the real problem here is the melody in combination with the chord progression.

Anyone who knows music theory will laugh at their comparison as composers. I doubt it’s a coincidence when it’s not only the guitar melody but the exact same vocal progression, and it’s coming off that a lot of people saying there is no similarity are people who don’t know or don’t care about Creep.
    Creep was massive. Still is to some degree. People know Creep. People have heard Creep. Lana definitely heard Creep. It’s not a coincidence, but she may have accidentally copied what they did - it may not be intentional. But it wasn’t pure chance. The likelihood of that is infinitely less believable than her subconsciously copying the sound.
    Even if it’s an accident, however, crediting the artist you are inspired by is just common courtesy. Not like she couldn’t afford it or anything.

      you do know there are multiple songs with this almost exact vocal progression, right? it's basically impossible to make something new nowdays, there's always gonna be songs with same kind of vocals or instrumental elements. so i don't think that having one same vocal progression means you need to give credit to all the artists with the same idea..? in addition, other parts of the song aren't simillar at all, se we really are talking about one simillar vocal progression.
