Fyi, you dont have to turn the main off with this setup. Turn the gray knob which bypasses the filter than hit the red button which is a relief for the pressure than unscrew the filter
You forgot to just use the bypass valve..The stuff on the gasket was silicone grease which allows the oring/gasket to seat properly when your tightening it...

Thanks for posting this. I have the same filter unit & didn't realize I had one until last week. Mine was disgusting too.
