  • Today, I had the great fortune to speak with Joe Justice, Agile Master, CEO of Wikispeed, former Tesla employee, author of Scrum Master, and so much more! We spoke of many many things (see the Table of Contents for a more complete list), including: Elon has a thousand year vision for SpaceX, Tesla and Neuralink! 20 minute changes at Tesla, explore/exploit self-optimization at Tesla, doing social good at work, the mind/body connection, and loving yourself and your employees, and how cellular production at Tesla leads to a never ending ramp!
    Needless to say, Joe was one of the most fascinating people I've ever spoken with, but beyond that, Joe's enthusiasm, generosity and kindness is astounding and contagious. Join us as 'we speak of many things, Techno Kings'!

    The most pleasure I ever had at my limited work experience was the two times I did something no one asked me to do. The result was a significant improvement of the product. The first time, I just did it and didn't tell anyone. They just had to witness the result. The second time, it was a pain to convince the boss, and he was so pleased when I did it because he also used that product.
    The current world of management is mad.

    • @stcredzero
      @stcredzero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, here's the thing. The set of people throughout history, who have had 1000-year visions for any kind of organization is...kind of iffy and kooky at best and downright evil at worst!

    • @glencecil293
      @glencecil293 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Now there's a thought! how about we just remain in our parents' basement, play video games all day long, and pass judgement on people who get things done?

    • @stcredzero
      @stcredzero 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@glencecil293 Now here's a thought. I've been called a "Tesla Fanboy." I have a Model 3 with the v10 beta FSD. (Fully paid, not subscription.) I'm also a literal "Tesla Millionaire." I also work at a Silicon Valley series C startup. So, one thing I find worse than people who pass judgement, are people who pass snap judgements on people on insufficient data who wind up in a counterfactual position. Actually, there's nothing worse about people who pass justified judgements. It's those snap judgement folks I don't care for. Isn't that the old definition of "prejudice?" The etymology is literally to pre-judge. To judge too soon. To judge without the requisite facts.

    Great discussion, John (and Joe). Regarding the time taken for gym or surfing workouts, almost all knotty problems I’ve had to solve remained elusive until I engaged in some mindless activity, like swimming, cycling, or running. Training for triathlons was essential to any success I’ve been lucky enough to experience.

    Here's a perspective about labor. There is a view of employees in 2 tiers, those that create the plan and those that execute the plan. People that create the plan can also execute the plan, but frequently companies don't view the employees who execute the plan as having any creative value. Some worker bees never give their work a second thought and are happy to execute the plan. But if employees who have ideas aren't allowed to contribute, then it is a broken work environment. Every idea isn't a good one, regardless of who had it. The boss isn't always right, and neither is the loudest voice. A truly productive work environment is the work environment where people understand the basic principles of purpose and how their work this minute fits in with the purpose of their work.
    The best teams I've had the privilege to lead were those that had the highest percentage of people that connected with our purpose. People can feel when it's time to put your head down and work, and will do so as long as they know there will be a time where they can speak up and share their ideas.

    The Coney Island matchstick replica story, reminds me of when I used to visit people's homes to quote them to move house.
    I've met many such people, generally older engineers. Sheffield UK (purely based on my empirical experience) is full of such people.
    Whether they've lathes and welders or fishing tackle or oil or watercolour painting equipment in their cellar or attic they created many things I consider to be art. I came to classify these people as having their own religion. Being able to relate led to many interesting conversations.
    They were all fundamentally problem solvers.

    Great discussion. My training and expertise is in "multi-state-determinate-machine-systems-design", originally called "cybernetics". This discipline is what makes computers possible. With your concept that you call "modularity" you are actually talking about improving the design of multi state "parts" in a set of inter-related parts that define your determinate machine. Each part has determinate sub parts, AND your "system" exists inside and can be influenced by a universe.

Family time, vacations, etc are incredibly important, but I’ve found myself doing projects during downtime on vacations. Not because I had to. Also, this isn’t just for corporate types, or engineers, or scientists. I was a firefighter/paramedic and there was always a project that had my attention.

    1:00:35 - if employees are peeing in garbage cans, maybe someone should look into providing some high rise porta potties - the kind that's on wheels with the urinal on the outside. (That is, porta potties designed for use in a skyscraper under construction.) They're easy to relocate to where they're needed, so given the size of the factory it might be good to put a tracking device on them so the service guy can find them when it's time to service them.

The main obstacle is stratification of duties and unions and lack of vision. Nothing against unions, but it is very hard to improvise with them. Regular manu is reducing variation which creates an atmosphere of don't rock the boat. Elon lets the horses (and minds) run free and look at the results! Thanks for the episode.

    Unless you have worked at Tesla you don't understand the level of innovation there without having listened to people like Joe.

    great interview... I am all about the agile and love hearing these stories and ideas discussed. I wonder if I can claim education credits with scrum alliance from listening to this? hmmm

    Balance in everything. The Semi and Cybertruck really only have branding value and hype. It makes no sense to build either one until there is a massive surplus of batteries. They are great concepts but Tesla's best intrest is to build as many 3s and Ys as they can. However innovation and R&D are important down the road.

    70s kid here too. I had the universally consulted Dr. Ritalin 😅 I believe a general practitioner wrote the prescription 😊

    This was a continuous stream of deep insights.
    Outside of the Tesla discussion, I marked those keywords: mind-body connection, media randomness->truth, social good, zoom out. On zoom out, it was interesting the connection with Joe's eyes issues and the scene in the canteen when he felt like having a 3rd person view.
    As for Tesla related, the highlight for me was how they do AI feedback, how not having a ladder leads to effort on long term stock price optimization & good for everyone, ML stack that thinks like Elon :)
    Yeah, I believe that consciousness outside of our planet does not have to be in the current biological form. If you have read Bruce Lipton / The Biology of Belief, I’d like to hear your opinion on the idea that we are just a broadcast in a quantum field and your cells have receptors of you.
    Thanks John!

    "There's a lot of corporate cultures, particularly the top down command control ones, that view you as a contribution and not a holistic thing to be loved, that don't want you to go yo the gym , that don't want you to go for a bike rode, because you're not solving their problem"

    Loved it. Lots to think about. Needing 7 billion people to produce 1 Elon Musk is a base level forcing function 😊. Maybe agile thinking could optimise on that 👍.
    I wonder what sets the pace of innovation at Tesla where you feel the need to run. Is there a run away train effect, where self optimisation coupled with parallel optimisation forces a ratcheting effect. Would love to know.
