Distributed Energy Resources (DER) is critical to the transition to a power system with renewables. DER definition will differ from one entity to another. IEEE Std 1547-2018 defines DER as any energy source or storage system with the capability of exporting power such as wind, solar PV, battery energy storage systems, combustion turbines, etc. IEEE Std 1547-2018 does not include loads that can be controlled part of demand response in DER. FERC Order 2222 includes demand response. DERs are connected to distribution systems, mainly radial. At this time, there is no specific IEEE standard that provides minimum performance requirements for DERs connected to networked sub-transmission (34.5 kV & 69 kV). Some states require DERs to be considered as non-wire alternative (NWA) solutions when evaluating mitigation to reliability issues.
