NBA Hangtime does not get the credit it deserves. Jam is great, but from a gameplay perspective Hangtime is better in every aspect. Jam is a great game, but HT is a more hardcore version of the engine that allows for better play at a high level

Totally agreed. Jam was fun, but Hangtime was better. Loved playing it in the arcade and had it for my N64. More players, more dunks, team fire, crazy alley-oops, better graphics, smoother gameplay. Plus it had its own theme song, which was FIRE (not in the Genesis version, but in N64 and arcade). “A three-point threat, no sweat, you can bet, back y’all in or fade away, all net, HANGTIME”

I think NBA Jam is remembered so fondly because it was the original over-the-top basketball title. The "sequels" were basically an extension of that original idea, and most people probably have a "been there, seen that" attitude, despite the games being better.

Bruh. Story time. My mom got me Street Fighter 2 Alpha for SNES, which I returned to the store for NBA Hangtime because I like SF2 Turbo better. My friend and I ended up playing Hangtime for the next 15 years. Our goal was always to score 100 points and keep the CPU under 50. Our peak best score was the night he was moving out of the country. We played for a solid 2 hours trying to get to 200 points and keep the CPU to 0. Well, the last game, we did it. We scored 200 points exactly while the CPU got 0. It was one of the best gaming nights of our lives. We wonder, to this day, if it's a record.

@@PersonalMagnusGames we didn't think it was because the game literally cheats if it gets behind to try to make it competitive. But, we would steal the ball 2-3 times or block their shot and do three alley oops in a row to get team fire. Rinse, repeat. But, we had well over 1000 hours into this game at this point. The only regret is that it was back in like 2008 so I didn't have a camera phone at the time. =/ wish I coulda gotten a picture. Otherwise, it's just a cool story that we hope people believe.

Well Midway lost the rights to use the word “Jam” because Acclaim got the rights to use the word Jam for consoles so Acclaim did a arcade version of NBA Jam Extreme first before they port it to the Saturn and the PlayStation so that’s why Midway used the words Hangtime and Showtime with the NBA on NBC name because they got the rights from NBC to use it.

Excellent thoughts and perspective on a topic not often tread. As a fellow fan of the series that lived through each iteration, I agree with your premise and the pillars you use to prop it up. By the time NBA Hang Time arrived on the scene, it was victim of a confluence of factors, not the least of which was 2D sprite and general NBA JAM fatigue in general. I don’t know if you recall a game off the beaten path in the series-College Slam (a collegiate version of the game that offered some experimental features like tip jams)-but Midway certain seemed to be milking the series and concept for all it was worth over several iterations. As you astutely point out, prior to Hang Time, the series just didn’t have the depth to sustain so many sequels and iterations. While I enjoyed each game as it came along (a child of the 80s and 90s, I worshipped not only at the alter of arcades and home consoles, but basketball as well), even I became fatigued a bit after Tournament Edition. I first saw Hang Time in the arcades, however, and was absolutely blown away. The 16-bit ports are impressive, but firing this up either on an Arcade1Up machine, an N64, emulation, or any way you can is well worth the effort. While the general gaming public slept on this game, it is the gold standard for the franchise and a mainstay in my retro rotation (especially as a multi-player party game, sans pandemic). I prefer it to even the more updated versions of the franchise, nothing plays quite the same as Hang Time. I tend to favor Maximum edition (Midway milking the franchise again), and on a big screen with proper settings in emulation it’s still a stunner for what it’s worth. Thank you again for your perspective on this and a chance to contribute my own two cents!

I'm a fan of both but Jam left a more lasting impression on me and many gamers. Despite the over the top gameplay, it still had a sense of realism to it. Initially midway was going for something more realistic at the beginning stages. They gave it a broadcast feel, the animations were very nice and the flesh tone and colors looked sharp and amazing.
many people who saw it at the arcade would visualize that they were in a actual NBA game. The developers had that in mind to allow fans to play as their favorite NBA players.
Hangtime is lacking a lot of OH SHIT moments. Like people look back to NBA Jam and think... Backboard shatters OH SHIT. NBA halftime report aptitude with an attitude, OH SHIT FMV highlights, then there were the dunking animations where ppl deliver monster jams and send opponents to the floor, OH SHIT. Final moments of the game, At the buzzer *bounce* bounce, it's good! Ohhh shit! i think the term that kids use today is "Hype". Street fighter V failed cuz it didn't have those hype moments that SF4 had

the announcer really gave it a live broadcast feel. Hangtime is considered the more advanced game but it didn't really capture people's imaginations like NBA Jam did. It felt more how you say... cartoony. The animations weren't impressive, there weren't any backboard glass shattering stuff, the announcer was uninspired, none of the dunks made anybody go OH SHIT.
obviously if you're comparing the N64 version of Hangtime or even the genesis port which was developed and produced in-house by midway themselves then it's going to run circles around Acclaim's port of NBA Jam which wasn't very good. I recently made a mod patch of NBA Jam for the PSX port which fixed a lot of the errors that acclaim made called NBA Jam 21.
but yeah people will keep going back to Jam because it was more simple and it had a way of capturing the atmosphere of a live NBA game. I do plan on making a NBA Hangtime mod though, my idea is to reskin it into a anime style game with female players lol

Thanks for the comment! You hit on some very important points. By the time Hangtime came out, all of those special moments were just not there. Hangtime arcade is the best but the Nintendo 64 one should've added a season and a tournament bracket. NBA showtime had the cool NBA on NBC intro but was too offensively oriented. The movement and spin move in NBA hangtime allowed you to push the computer to it's limits and be able to secure victories if you execute properly whereas NBA jam's limited movements forced you to submit to the computer cheating if they were down 15+, overriding even the most superb excecutions of defense and offense.

OK, here’s how I know we’re all being watched. Every morning before work I wake up and play 10 to 15 minutes of NBA jam. Now TH-cam, Where I’ve never searched for anything NBA jam related, recommends a video from a creator with less than 1000 subscribers about NBA jam. Great video though.

This might be the first video I've seen on here, favoring NBA Hangtime over NBA Jam. I think they're different enough that I don't think I'd ever confused the two of them. Hangtime is more fast paced, imo. I'd say the same for NBA Showtime. The three of them are different and all three pretty great. I can't say the same for games like NBA Hoopz.

the reviewer from Next Generation Magazine said NBA Jam Extreme had superior graphics to NBA Hangtime lol...i swear, back in the 90s, ppl were so dick-matized by those primitive 3D polygons but i knew what was better even back then....

All you had to do in this game was turbo to half court, hit the spin, then go to the rack. It worked way, way, too often

I have Nba Hangtime on N64 and Nba Jam Tournament Edition for the Atari Jaguar and love both but I have to go with Hang Time. Game just feels more polished to me. I have fun with both but find myself going back to Hang time more. I love the PS3 Nba Jam game as well. That game is awesome. I want to track down the Sega Cd Port of the Original Nba Jam. I hear that Port is the best of the Original game.

I played all versions of NBA hanging from Genesis SNES PS1 N64 and will say it doesn't get the respect that it deserves! Sure NBA jam and NBA showtime were great game but hangtime had more varieties and opinions

Quite simply, Hangtime made NBA Jam obsolete. I used to rent it for SNES all the damn time. A few years later I found the PC version which was pretty much arcade-perfect, and that + my Gravis Gamepad Pro kept me occupied for years.

it haven't aged a day! (don't know about the genesis version though 😅sadly you had one of the worse versions of the game, later it came to the n64 and ps1 which were pretty much arcade perfect)

Hey Personal Magnus, sorry for pulling my comment after talking to you. I wish you would have responded to my comment sooner. I actually reached out to a couple people after talking to you to see if there was any interest and I found another TH-camr that was ready to commit to the idea immediately. He has a few friends that were gamers too that were willing to be part of the team too. We decided on a deal for me to fund his channel for the next year. I'm sorry, but i was in a little rush to get this going. I'm on a timeline with my other business.
I wish you the best in your endeavors. I think you'll go a long way if you keep working hard. It's unfortunate we couldn't do business. You're gonna do fine if you keep making videos. Honestly, you really would have been a good fit for what i was working on. I thought we would have gotten along great. I wish you the best on your channel. I appreciate you responding to my comment. thx
