That's a long thick cable which is expensive and ugly. It may overheat and melt. Hence series connection is used. Series connection is where you connect the negative terminal of one panel to the positive of the next and the negative of that to the positive of the 3rd panel and goes on like that. In the end you get the positive of the very first panel and negative of the last panel, you connect those to the inverter.
