Heya, you are NOT kidding about the instructions being confusing. I'm trying to figure out my installation now; I had the cash to spend so I had the dealer put on the saddlebag support racks, and the trunk support rack (all bags are Viking.) Viking has a video up, simple computer graphical illustration, that's helping me a little. But I sure wish you'd filmed installing the bags. :) I got the 500, because out in basin-range, I've _still_ got the smallest engine but at least now I can keep up with highway traffic! My old school 250, the poor squirrels couldn't pedal any faster no matter how hard I yelled at 'em. :)
I love the bike I just wish there was something size-wise in between the 125 Grom and the 300 that you have I just want something to Jack around the neighborhood that 300 looks like it basically is a full size bike with a smaller engine
It is. I've owned the rebel 300 2017 since late April 2018 and I can tell you one thing for certain. Unless your leg inseam is less than 29inches, you'll be alittle cramp.
500 if you prefer a heavier bike and don't mind forking out another 1500 to 2 grand in price and are afraid a 286cc won't be enough power to carry two total people weighing a total of about 400 pounds. Otherwise, get the 300 if you don't need to go faster than 75 ( it does 95 but that's absolutely maxing out the engine/rpms...) on a daily basis without straining the engine, are on a tighter budget, and most often wont be carrying anyone else or won't be carrying yourself and gear weighing more than 350 pounds ( this is per the owner's manual), and are picky about your tires and brakes lasting as long as absolutely possible. I'm analytical. xD Weight difference is around 40 pounds total and with the 500, the side of the engine kinda sticks out some on the rightside. You'll just have to sit on a 500 and a 300 to get a real feel for what I mean there. If you have any more questions, ask. Cheers.
I have a 2017 rebel 300 also, but the one thing I couldn't tell from watching this video carefully three times was , must I get the medium size with the " cut out" version which is alittle pricier? I couldn't tell if this guy had to get that version or not given camera angles used in this video.

I carry almost everywhere I go. I'm as law abiding as they come and as an firearms instructor I preach conflict avoidance and de-escalation. Sadly, that may not alway be possible.

You can get a CSC SG250 which is like a 3/4 bike and super fun to play around on, really cheap, and fairly reliable!
