I was there a few years ago and always thought it was in an odd location even though it was next to the station, for people to hang out who are fans of the area. I must correct, having lived there and built computers in the late 80s early 90s that Akihabara was a place for "video games" (personal computers like the PC-9801, consoles) even back then, not the early 2000s, though it was transitioning from "radios". Even the anime stuff was there with "Doujin" shops. The Fujitsu FM-Towns building was a favorite hangout, and almighty SOFMAP ruled the used games business. The main stretch of Akihabara with computer and game shops even in the early 1990s was on the other side of the station and a bit of a walk away from the Sega Bld. I remember not being interested in that spot also because it was more "radio" gear than the Computer stuff which was more near where Super Potato still is now. Even Aum Shinrikyo had computer shops in those back roads ... If I recall correctly Sega actually still has some kind of game building (or at least Sega games) on the main stretch beyond Matsumoto Kiyoshi pharmacy (turn to the right).

@electric 6 it's an old train car from 1954 which resembles a frog because it's painted in green. It wasn't a big deal but became famous because of its location and many Hello Kitty collaborations. I wouldn't recommend go to Akita because honestly the frog is not that much and Akita is way too far from Tokyo. But if you're in the area sure, why not.

The original Radio Kaikan was close to this building, but it was a different building. It looked like it was from the 50's or 60's and in 2012 had loads of hastily-patched cracks from the 2011 earthquake. There's already a new Radio Kaikan which is way too clean and nice looking!
The sega building looks too new to have been around in the era of commonplace home appliance repairs. By the time it went up people probably just bought a new radio if the old one broke XD
(Also the site of the World Trade Center in New York used to be called "Radio Row" and had loads of small shops selling valves, speakers and other parts)

Such a shame, not only cause i used to love making awesome long-exposure night photography with that building in the frame. But also that this specific arcade is the best arcade in all of Tokyo for playing the Starwing Paradox arcade game. You saw a snippet of that floor in John's video at the 8:49 mark - that floor is literally 24 Starwing machines. Never have to wait in a queue ever to play it !
And best of all, after a satisfying gameplay session, at the ground floor of this building you have one of the few original Pepper Lunch left standing !! Really going to miss this.

Nice to see the Gundam Cafe still open... I enjoyed visiting that one! But don't expect much for those that haven't seen it in person. It's more of a landmark for visiting other parts of akihabara.

Been there many times, the higher floors have the more adult games, also you can smoke and drink a chu-hi while playing SFV. As long as Taito Game Station doesn't close also there's hope.

Nooooooo. I love Akihabara and the Sega game centers, every time I go back to Japan I end up in Akihabara for the crane machines and figure buying. Can’t believe this iconic building from Sega will be no more. This damn pandemic has really hit hard on many businesses around the world. 😢

another request if you don't mind. I am always amazed at how the bikes and pedestrians and cars interact so smoothly in the busy streets of tokyo from the shibuya scramble to the small alleyways/streets without major incidents. could you do a small video sometime on the "rules of the road" regarding how japan has successfully merged all the various forms of travel. reaaly love your videos keep bringing the quality videos. i learn more from your videos than some tv documentaries.

That's really sad, it was one of the first arcades I visited when I came to Japan for the first time :c At least there's still one more Sega Game Center in Akihabara, as well as a Taito Station and the new arcade at the top floor of Don Quijote
    !

Donuts are from the Netherlands, not America. It's based up on a ancient Roman recipe which is spherical in shape and called a 'oliebol'. Because these things need some time getting deepfriet someone decided to make a hole in it to make it faster, later the ingredients also changed a bit.
I did plan to move to Japan, but with covid that plan fell in the water. I have to figure out how to get there now, probably will take me another 2-3 years now :(
I do hope I can still make at least a vacation trip to Japan soon, really love the country and it would make me so happy to at least have been there once. I think I can practice my photography just perfectly in Japan.

Japan has like the best video games ever and I really hate it, when arcade centers like this one gets shut down forever and it is just sad. :_(
