One of Kishimoto greatest problems wasn’t even that he couldn’t write woman.
It was he couldn’t write characters who didn’t have Sharingan or Harshirama cancer.
I mean Rock Lee, Temari, Neji, Anko were very similar. They had a Few Episodes just dedicated to them that made them AWESOME and fan favorites. But then they are forgotten about.
Hell I’d say Kishimoto is very true to Gender Equality. Every side character is forgotten about or shafted no matter their Gender or looks.

I was pissed about that. You would think that once Naruto understood the details he wouldn't want anything to do with his in-laws. You would think that he would have taken a page from the shitty Third Hokage and pull with the Hyuga Clan what the Old Geezer pulled with the Uchiha Clan. I mean the only other person that he liked from that clan was Neji and he suffered the same fate he had been avoiding his whole damn life.

@@tonguepop9453 In a way yes, but in a way no. If Naruto had noticed Hinata's feelings for him when they were still Genin, or Hinata had grown a spine when they were 14 and declared her undying love for the boy that rebelled against the world that shunned him, while she was always afraid of the authority figures in her life then it could have worked. Basically instead of jerking us around with the Sasuke bullshit, Kishimoto could have had Team 7 and Team 8 do frequent assigned Espionage missions involving Shadow Clone and Byakugan shared reconnaissance for the Fire Country or something. Kishimoto had an insane amount of good tools and powers in his worlds sandbox but he didn't use them for any character progression and constantly relied on running gags. Naruto is a story told with decent art at the beginning with impressive moments at the start, but that latter did not payoff the way we expected. If anything even if it is a low bar Naruto is one of those few stories in the early 2000's where the girls and women for the most part are the ones that choose the guys they love and do not regret it later. None of that the guys make the first move and have to prove themselves to not be loosers to them. Or that any of the women are in abusive or bad relationships with "hot" but ultimately dumb and selfish men so they go with the more noble hero. Or that they view relationships as something completely bad and unnecessary so they forgo love all together until the "right" guy comes along and is convincing enough to prove them otherwise. The girls in Naruto at least choose and had good enough judgement that the long run it shows that they dot chose badly.

@@WeirdTale That's because, for all of Naruto's grand speeches about changing the world, Naruto never actually changed anything. He pep talked and punched his way into making everyone submit and give up on warring (Sort of). Naruto never changed nor did even think about changing the actual fundamental issues of the world. He is the sort of person who thinks everything can be solved with a hug. Actually trying to grasp the complexities of the world goes far above his head.

The whole bit about women being the healers was so infuriating to me, cuz Tsunade did mention that training medical ninjas was hard because they needed to have perfect chakra control + memorizing lots of studies. Wouldn't it have made more sense to make Shikamaru the healer of the Ino-Shika-Cho trio? Considering he's already the smartest person there. Hinata and Neji could've both learned healing techniques too considering they can literally see the flow of chakra and arguably make the healing better, but instead they just made the technique exclusive to the female characters, Ino, Rin, Granny Chiyo, etc.

The worst part is that the women had some of the most interesting powers in the Naruto universe. Sakura and Tsunade could literally punch boulders into oblivion. Ino had the ultimate intel ability to possess people, see/hear through them, and even connect the consciousness of multiple people for thought sharing. Tenten had a nearly infinite pool of projectile weapons (eat your heart out, Gilgamesh). And Konan literally parted the sea with her paper seals.
To this day, I cant believe that the Manga pushed the females aside by accident or poor writing. It must have taken effort to make so many powerful/nuanced powers worthless in the grand scheme of the show, and that's when we are only considering ninjutsu.

    • @GabrielMoura-qe1xr
      @GabrielMoura-qe1xr 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

That's not really more interesting, anything Sakura and Tsunade could do with their strenght, the actual strong people could do better (Madara just drawing the sword of his Perfect Susano'o)and healing is usefull and Sakura kept Naruto alive in the War when he lost Kurama but, ultimately, not flashy enough for Shonen. To posses people Ino had to send her mind to the target leaving her body defenseless. Tenten didn't have that, she had a bunch of random normal weapons inside scrolls(a very finite number) and as Temari showed very useless, there was nothing special about them, don't compare to Gilgamesh which with his swords could actually pierce mountains and kaiju, not even gonna say more about the actual special weapons he has, Tenten thing was throw a bunch of weapons and hope it does something. For Konan to do that she needed a lot of time and preparation and it was an one off thing, a last effort to kill Tobi, not something she could do again(without more time and prep).

It's obvious from the start that Nami would not be able to keep up with the starting crew in terms of strength and fighting ability, but the writer substitutes this by giving her an extremely important role in the crew. Her being the navigator is virtually the backbone of the straw hats' accomplishment of their goal. Without her, Luffy and Co wouldn't have made it to the grandline. Same with Robin, even though her devil fruit has potential, she plays a very important role in that she is the archeologist and one of the very few people who can read ponygliphs. One thing I think people always forget to mention when criticizing something for poor quality work fueled by misogynistic writing is the effect it has on men in the real world. The ideas it puts into young boys that women are shallow, weaker, sexier versions of men is so harmful to young boys and so it's hilarious when people say "well the main audience is teenage boys" as if it's not harmful to them. Misogyny in anime never directly hurts women cause most women I know prefer to watch anime's without it and so it can only hurt the young boys who are subliminally indoctrinated with this fantasy. And every one knows that kids will always chase fantasy over realism especially the ones who love anime so no doubt it might contribute to a harmful, shallow fantasy that forms their idea of how women should be and how they should therefore treat them. I mean when you try and make a meaningful relationship out of any of these antiquated, shallow and misogynistic/misandrist expectations then you will always fail. You can't spin gold with straw.

Like I know that children are trained killers from like age of 5 and that basicly there is nothing impossible but like we are shown that there was period of at least few years that Naruto spent all by himself and seeing Third few times a month to recieve his money. Like how did kid younger than 6 learn to dress himelf, cook, clean, bathe himself? How did he learn to use money he was given? I am not psychologist but I know that he would have at least some issues being all alone, hated by everyone and that wouldn't be just vandalising statues. He would be dirty, unkempt have at least some speach or cognitive issues, emotional issues and would have some trouble functioning in society and be at least partly feral. Like there are real kids left alone and they aren't that functioning. That is if he didn't burn his house while trying to cook something and die or I don't know got lost wandering and die. He is only alive because of the Kuramas healing powers and sourely they were weaker when he was baby. But the craziest think in the whole anime has to be small kid left alone for days. Another, much shorter one is "Into the Water" (archiveofourown.org/works/13759833). While "Find Your Place (whatever it takes)" (archiveofourown.org/works/14112045) is much darker and hasn't been updated in a while, it's very much worth a read too. And Branch's wonderfully written "It’s Just That Any One of Us Is Half Without Another One Is You" (archiveofourown.org/works/230916) features Sakura x Sasuke x Naruto (as in, they're all in love with each other) if you prefer some romance. By the same author is Hinata-centric "Cloud Hands" (archiveofourown.org/works/267550). Finally, I recommend "(i promise you that) we're marching on" (archiveofourown.org/works/1172719). Worst part is that Sakura has so many MOMENTS where you can see genuine development and growing maturity and then Kishimoto pulls a 180° and makes her exactly as she was before. I dont mind the women being healers, generally more emotional, or generally less proficient at conbat in the story, if you want the men to be the warriors, and the women to be the emotional heart of the story, that's perfectly fine. But they have to be PEOPLE at the end of day. At some point it stops feeling like a character being bad, and just the writing being bad.
An arc where Sakura got over Sasuke to find something/someone else to fight for wouldve been awesome! You dont even have to take away her love interest! Maybe she falls in love with Lee or Naruto, learning to appreciate the people who actually gave a crap about her (keep in mind having a female character fall in love does not devalue her, as long as its not the only thing she lives for). She gets some truly badass moments, and demonstrates loyalty and that hard work pays off, and then the writing takes that lovely bit of development and smashes it. Over. And over. And over again. Its infuriating to watch, as she was always my favorite character. I found her insecurity highly relatable, and her having to 100% work for every skill she ever had (because no bloodline funny business for her) was really inspiring. Too bad it doesnt stick.
Poor Hinata, she had such potential but at the end of the day shes almost a nothing character. Her entire personality is Naruto to the point where it comes off as obsessive. At least Sakura would occasionally interact with the guy she liked (though he treated her like shit 99% of the time). Imagine if she gave her life for Neji instead of the other way around, shattering Neji's fatalistic worldview, and teaching everyone about the brutal cost of war, that death comes for you no matter if youre a homeless peasant, or the heiress to the strongest clan in Konoha. Or she could serve as a diplomat type, using her authority and connections to pull strings in favor of her allies, and becoming a confident, no nonsense woman who is the first to speak, not stutter and hide like when she was a child. Get rid of her naruto obsession, make her shyness a little less comedic, and a little more, "I have debilitating social anxiety and must work hard to overcome it because I am more than my flaws". You can still give her a love interest, but she needs to interact with him more than 4 times in the entire story.
I dont think Kishimoto is sexist, i think he just doesnt understand how to write women (which, honestly, writing people of the opposite sex IS difficult) but thats no excuse for every female character being so underutilized. Though, most of the male characters dont have it TOO much better. If youre not an uchiha or uzumaki you really dont matter at the end of the day. Such a shame.

I was so hype to see sakura become a powerhouse bruiser in early shippuden, and i really wanted her to use her medical abilities to get reckless with her fighting style, i.e. punching so hard she break her own arm, then casually heals it back up while still swinging.
I wanted a fiery, hot headed, ferocious brawler to compliment naruto's sheer speed and numbers, since her role of "genjutsu" was taken away.
I wanted her to be the beast that tsunade was played up to be in her early episodes.
I would have adored to see a dynamic between her and rock lee, where one's fighting with nothing but the sheer might of his MASCLE, and hte other is channeling raw chakra into every punch!
When it came to her personality, Ignoring her actions (i.e. her attempted manipulation of naruto. you know what i'm talking about.) I enjoyed her personality. But what I really learned to hate about her was simply put, her inability to keep up with naruto and sasuke. I always firmly believed that as a main character, she should be able to, if nothing else, fill in that missing bruiser/tank role, since naruto filled the protagonist role, and sasuke was at this point, a prodigy in the field of jutsu. As opposed to pulling a yamcha or krillin and just shouting the protag's name over and over.
but the path they took for her was just.... Eugh. they didn't just make her useless, they made her irredeemably nasty, with the guise of pretending to be a good person.

We're told sakura is one of the strongest people in Konoha, we're told that Hinata is one of the youngest characters to have created their own Jutsu from scratch. Whilst Hinata had her's when she fought pain and during the last: naruto the movie. You remember that fake confession? yea tho I fucking hated it because it had done no justice to her character and she was MANIPULATED before hand which basically gave her no time to actually think it through and she had no moral support from anyone in the village after the news there is one thing you can find in it and it's that she rather have Naruto than sasuke and she was willing to keep her only friend who had always been there for her rather than sasuke. She even said it when Naruto was leaving the village that he always understood her. After sasuke left I'm not gonna say all romantic feelings disappear because even irl it doesn't work like that but she definetly went to develop and put what's right over how she feels, she was willing to kill sasuke just for naruto's sasuke and YES we all knew she couldn't have done it would you want to kill someone you spent all your years on getting back and someone you liked? even in the final valley when sasuke was going to fight Naruto kakashi said sakura doesn't want to have you romantically she just wants her friend back (not exactly what he said) Even tho her getting stronger was for bringing back sasuke, Naruto was still her motivation in helping him bring sasuke back and she's even said it many times that she'll get stronger with him to get sasuke back. Sasusaku is a complex dynamic so I won't touch on their actual relationship but just wanted to point out she was never romantically obsessed with sasuke after he left.

Hinata is also a big disappointment because she had a solid backstory and her motivation could have been her wanting to change the system of her clan' after Neji's pain under it, or to surpass her father and prove her worth to him. To turn her original weakness and source of her rejection from her family and Neji's hatred in her compassion, into a strength for their clan... but nope. Its just Naruto. Eventually, she self-inspected, accepting all of her flaws and shortcomings to easily distance herself from those, working her ass off as Tsunade's personal trainee, educating herself better and stronger, and taking on bigger challenges. She wanted to prove herself as well as her teammates, that she no longer was that burden they had to put up with back in the day. That's growth and even Ino, her "rival", came to acknowledging that change during their Chunin Exam fight. Sakura showed herself strong-willed enough to nullify Ino's Spirit Possession jutsu (the only person in the entire series so far who's achieved such a feat). That's even the reason why Inner Sakura had started fading out of the manga little by little (Shippuden's first chapter being its last appearance) since Sakura's training eventually had her mature into a young woman comfortable enough in herself, her abilities, and her opinions. I'm not even going to mention Kakashi noting Sakura's growth in the Shippuden's first episode and during the Shinobi War.

Also, you can force a horse to a lake, but you can't make him drink. There was no obligation for Sasuke to marry Sakura but he did. And it was out of love, their marriage is enough proof of that. Sasuke wouldn't have married Sakura if he didn't want to; my man can defy the laws and become a terrorist, and you think he'll bend to the will of a person to marry him if it wasn't out of his own choice?
Sasuke is Sakura's husband, and he is bound to treat her right. And OP right here just points out how Sakura, despite her amazing qualities, was dimmed down to the traditional gender roles of a housewife in the Anime.

Don't you think that the biggest punishment for Sakura would have been to not get the person for whom she did all that she had done? What was the point of getting Sasuke and Sakura married if she didn't "deserve" to be happy?
That is cause she did deserve to be happy. Trash personality, you say. She forced her love on Sasuke her whole life, you say. Did that ever negatively affect Sasuke? No. Sakura destroyed herself for him. She made decisions that negatively impacted her own life, not Sasuke's. And suddenly not everyone calling her out is her own fault? That is just blatant victim blaming. Sakura's main motivation according to the author was Sasuke so obviously he never tried to fix her obsession with him, whether through self reflection or any close acquaintance or mentor.
And character development is the main point her. According to what you say, Sasuke deserved a life sentence for his terrorist activities. But he came past that point, didn't he? He deserved to get a second chance. So does Sakura. One of the best Kunoichis, the best medic in town, a dependable mentor and mother. Also, trauma is not an excuse for someone's behaviour. Sakura was a child when she bullied Naruto. It doesn't matter if she had trauma to back it up or not. What matters is she becomes one of his best team mates in the future and therefore she overcomes her shortcomings.

back to the point, women love shounen so much they make their own damn series (hitman reborn, blue exorcist, fullmetal alchemist, etc) and even mangaka's like demon slayer's writer who remains ambiguous on their gender.

Even Fairy Tail - a series that sexualises women all the time - had better female characters. Most of them had their dreams and goals. Kana wanted to have good relationship with her dad, Lucy wanted to write a book and go on adventures, I'm pretty sure Biska wears the pants in her marriage with Alzack and Ul was a walking legend and a disaster of a mother, if you think about it. Elza Scarlett is one of the strongest guild members and was shown to hold her own in battles, yet she is still very much a woman. She is more than just an attractive girl and more than a warrior, she is a kind and compassionate person, a loyal and caring friend.

I didn't want to 'hate' them but when the rest of a fanbase hates on a character, you feel weird liking them. I was just overall disappointed how the show ended, and how the girls got the guys they chased for their whole lives. This does not happen in real life, if a girl chased around a guy for 'true love' like these girls did, we would think something is def wrong here slash you have no reason to love someone who you barely know. They really had so much potential, but the whole chasing boys until they notice you really sucked. I mean, no one hated Naruto for doing the same with Sakura, like at all, even though he didn't get her. It does show the double standard.

I'm mostly irrelevant to the many female characters deeming them as simply unfortunate, but I hate Hinata and Sakura. Because so many people try to justify them and/or deny their flaws. They are downright bad characters and there is nothing to be ashamed about that. But their fanboys are so annoying that I ended up getting fed up with the characters themselves. When ppl talk about Ino or Tenten, most will simply laugh and agree that they were wasted, but if you bring either Sakura or Hinata they'll give a thousand bullshit excuses for why they are awesome when they clearly are not.

this! Especially when you take into account the fact that there are LOTS of stories targeted at women that have well-written male characters. Not all obviously, but in mangas for instance, Mamoru from Sailor Moon is such a great character. He has a lot of depth, and he's such a great guy that I can see a lot of young girls wanting to date him. I've noticed that female writers TEND to make better male love interest because they want to write people that the female audience would connect with on a personal level, so they give him depth and an endearing personality (like even the cliché bad boy always turns ou to have a heart of gold and a sad backstory which give him depth). Basic male authors on the other hand make female love interest extremely shalow, just good looking and heplessly devoted to some guy. It's as if they think that's all a man could ever value in a partner, whereas female authors tend to think women value a man who has clear positive character traits beyond being cute. It reflects so poorly on men in general, when stories suposedly written for them shit out bad female characters like this. If as a man you don't feel offended that there is an entire industry that believes you're just an ape who likes big boobs and want a personal servant for life rather than an equal, well maybe you're just as trash as the industry thinks you are lol.

Seriously? Who had potential? Who right out of the eight gates made you go "now this is a well written female character. I can't wait to see where they go with her"? Who had that potential. Ino? Sakura? Hinata is about the only charterer I can think of that sort of tried to have an arc, but even she started as mumbles. Maybe I'm missing the really good female character that was really well written at the start of the show. And fuck. You know how many people I see bitching about sakura and Hinata being housewives? Are you fucking kidding me? We watched a planet sucking tree devour everyone, demigod animal transformations, multiple dimensions, and cutting the moon in half. Fuck that. If I didn't have plot armour I would have quit and been a housewife too. Fuck that kaiju shit. I like cooking. Fucking female characters were the smart ones. They saw what was out there and were like "all yours boys". I'm gonna go chill with the kids and make a bitching stew.

I know. Though it should be noted that the whole Female Sexuality/Attractiveness=Weakness and Subservience is a very Mediteranian and Arabic idea. Japanese women traditionally where seen to be dangerous when beautiful and if not forced to be bound by duty or servitude could seduce and compell all men to do their bidding. Basically Ancient Arabs, Persians, and Mediteranian Europeans we're more likely to understimate women wile the Japanese feared what they could do if freed. At least that is how I interpret plenty of old legends from all of those cultures.

I mean...Lets look at some of the adult female characters of the show. Tsunade, despite being a drunken lout when we need her, is still pretty and rocking insane tits and a great figure, though we learn that she doesn't actually look this way, and uses her ability to stay young looking. there might be some personal justification in universe, but that's ALL kishimoto. Konan is barely a character, she could have been a doll made by Nagato and it would not have changed all that much, to go with the Yahiko doll or whatever. The snake lady wears a trenchcoat and firnexts, has huge tits and is constantly being bound and bitten. This is again, a recurring theme that while not shouting "PORN!" is always in the name of fan service. Again, all Kishimoto.

    • @blackmage665
      @blackmage665 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

@Brandname I think you are confusing a character being sexual and a character being sexualized. The former is an internal thing that is a defiing trait, and other people in universe should notice and probably have some sort of opinion on it, regardless of whether or not it's stated to the viewer. The Latter is something done for the audience, and doesn't really add anything to the character aside from the fact that they look and good are put into fan service moments.
Also, notice how you even phrase it yourself, a character "being sexualized", is an external force that could probably be removed and the character in quesiton loses nothing of value, where as some very sexual characters would lose some core part of them. Jiraiya is an old man who is a sexual deviant, it's a defining character trait and he would lose something important to who he is if that were removed, but Tsunade being sexualized doesn't alter her character at all, neither does he having huge boobs that are basically out there for the world to see. Her specific sexualization flies in the face of her more competent and noble parts, and her vanity and insecuirty about her true looks never really play a role in her character as a downside, it's just treated in the series that it's a twist for the audience that she isn't actually some hot milf type and uses power to look good. That doesn't do anything in universe, that's all for the audience.
I don't know much about red sonja aside from that it seems like a conan ripoff, and that whole thing is about how muscles are better than armor, and looking good comes from that, so the best I can really say is that what you said is a flimsy and lame way to say "We want to show off nearly naked people, don't question it"

I think Konan could've been the most badass female character in the show. They totally wasted her by killing her off in like 2 episodes after she left the akatsuki. She easily could've served as one of the most powerful ninja on the combined ninja forces side in the war, and she even could've had moments with Nagato's reanimated body instead of Naruto getting all those moments. Or even her own flashbacks and more backstory. Nagato and Yahiko both had their motives and we understood their purpose. They each shared Naruto's dream of finding peace, and all that they made Konan do was "support their dream". She also wasn't gaga for either of her teammates, even turning down Yahiko's interest in her because they were in war times. She was one of my favourites and it was really disappointing throwing her out the way they did.

As a firm Konan supporter, I couldn’t help but feel like her final battle with Tobi was really underwhelming. This woman faked an entire lake with paper, observed and noted Tobi’s weaknesses and limitations, only to be killed off by some izanagi bullshit. Sadly, in regular Kishimoto fashion, all her potential as a character was thrown away to aid the male characters in building the plot. It also irks me that she spent a large majority of her screentime playing nurse with Nagato. Imagine if she lived and ended up joining the allies in their plan to end Madara Uchiha. That would’ve been epic.

What I hated the most is that despite all the girls figthing over boys throughout the whole series, the guys never really gave a shit about the girls romantically, not counting silly crushes like Naruto liking Sakura. And thus, none of the couples that got together when they grew up makes sense (except Shikamaru and Temari, but I feel like that's only because this whole man vs woman thing was a part of Shikamaru's character). They had to give us a movie to make Naruto fall in love with Hinata because there was almost no evidence of him being interested in her romantically in the anime. Him getting super mad over her "death" in the Pain arc was such perfectly wasted potential, as it could've been a first step for him to realize he has some feelings but nothing was done about it after. Sasuke and Sakura seems even more stupid, because not only did Sasuke give zero fucks about Sakura, he even kept hurting her over and over again, and there's no way a girl keeps loving a guy that shits on them constantly unless they have serious mental issues... Ino and Sai never had a connection, other than Ino crushing over Sai's looks. And the list goes on. I get that this is a shounen anime, but if you're going to include romantic subplots, put some effort into them, at least for the main couples ffs.
