I only saw them once live but they interacted with the audience. the opening act, the Liars, the singer threw the mic stand into the crowd and beaned a dude in the head with the bottom of it and cut his head open, blood flowing. didn't even stop the show. dude hit the floor and the show continued. out of control but rock and roll man! I'm glad it missed me, I was standing right next to him

Pretty valid description. You can tell Jon Spencer has watched all those old James Brown TAMI Show performances and was influenced by that. This performance might not be on a greatest hits playlist, but it's definitely on the greatest performances playlist. These guys don't hold back. They give every show 101% and that's really inspiring. In order to get the JSBX vibe, it's not enough to listen to their records, you really do have to go to one of their live shows.

This rules. I saw the Blues Explosion a bunch right around this time. At small shitty venues like Birdy's in Indianapolis. It was sweaty and riotous and righteous. I saw Judah Bauer come out and watch the opening act (The Apple Brothers?) with like 5 other people. We caught JSBX like two or three years in a row on New Year's Eve with RL Burnside and North Mississippi All Stars. There was sweat and youth and excess and people passing out on public transportation. Thanks for posting this. I didn't always have a mortgage, and this takes me back.

Saw them in Philly in 1994 or so at a bar called the Khyber Pass. It was almost more than the human mind could bear. Great days. Great band.

Weird to reply to an 8 yr old comment, especially just to be a dick. Call all the bullshit you want…Indy has public transportation, and there are lots of shitty little venues in the area (Chicago especially)

This was an Australian Saturday morning television show aimed at teenagers so not exactly peak performing time. I was lucky enough to be watching it and was totally blown away. One of the three performances I wish I could time travel to. The other being faithless at Glastonbury 2002? and Lynyrd Skynyrd at Oakland in the 70's

    • @fincarosa

Sunday morning. The show was called Recovery and was live so even more so not peak performance time.... Many bands played having coming straight thru from their sat night gig or maybe just sat night out. Was such an awesome show....Hosted by Dylan Lewis himself the singer of a punk band. Many great memories from Recovery.

Bantam Rooster was a Detroit 2 piece---no gimmicks....and runaway train of rock and roll. Drummer was so good, sounded like a 4 piece, as is Potters guitar playing and tone. they werent inbred husband and wife. Spencers first album is two versions, one on Crypt "Crypt Style" and the Caroline version with a slightly different track choice. The BLUES IS #1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Spencer has been around for awhile...he should be even bigger, but he's about the nicest guy in rock and roll/music today. extremely polite, humble off stage. great band. i wonder if Matador Records had an in with Stewart---Spencer on tv, GBV after Alien Lanes...this, is fantastic. Saw the Extra Width tour with Buffalo Tom. They mean business. Listen to Pussy Galore, any Honeymoon Killers hes on, basically anything he's involved in.
