  • Grief-stricken for years, Peter finally goes back behind the camera and ends up shooting one of his most popular films. But he sues the studio before the movie is released, further endangering his career. While trying to recover, Peter once again becomes a target of the press after he marries Dorothy’s sister.

I'm surprised that no one on Team TCM was able to notice and fix the error at 31:24. Ben mentions PB visiting Polly P. in 2001 right before she died of ALS - but she died in 2011. Kind of an undergrad goof to leave in there, but this is overall a fabulous piece of work. I'm looking forward to listening to the Lucy season next.

Great series. Ben, your emphasis on how the great films are made in your 20s and in your 70s and that we must treasure our elderly. I'm in my 60s. Can't say that I have any achievements at the level of PB. But, I do have hope for rhe future. Thanks for the series.

This is not the tell all it has been represented as. It is obvious that Peter and Louise only agreed to be interviewed so long as a certain very public scandal was never mentioned. Hugh Hefner held a press conference wherein he accused Bogdanovich of seducing then 13 year old Louise. He claimed to have 5 sources for the story, including Louise's step father. Police investigated but chose not to file charges. The family sued Hefner for slander but later dropped the suit. Not a word of that is mentioned in this interview, not even to debunk it.

I credit Mankiewicz for not mentioning all the salacious crap, because that's all it is. The interview and TCM is about films, filmmaking and filmmakers,
I only regret that there is not more information about Bogdonovich's early career, which was more interesting, although there are other interviews devoted to that period.

this extended profile is a wonderfully warm and revealing picture of a sadly underrated bogdanovich --
though hardly unacknowledged, his fascination with classic filmmakers seems to have removed him from
the circle of his peers - scorsese, spielberg, de palma, among others - and ignored a contribution as worthy as any
of his generation - eager to hear where this series goes next

I'm thinking because he called out MGM NBC for their detestable behavior. Snyder and Hefner hired a private detective named Goldstein to stalk Dorothy Strattens every movement up until she was murdered. He was literally outside the house when she was raped tortured and killed.
Afterwards, he ransacked the bedroom of Dorothy's items and sold her diary letters and other items to MGM/NBC who were producing a gossipy documentary. They also paid him $65,000 to act as a
"technical consultant" on the documentary about Dorothy's death. HOW SICK AND EVIL IS THAT?
Peter Brogdonavich was going to file a lawsuit against them and caused a very righteous hissy fit over this. He also very vocally called out Hugh Hefner and exposed many other high profile Celebrities who hung out at the mansion and made aggressive passes at Dorothy like James Caan. Hugh Hefner raped her too.
I'm guessing that's partially why he was snubbed by Hollywood.
He was one of the early people to call out that rotten town

I dont blame Brogdonavich in a weird way for eventually marrying her sister. It must have been an extremely traumatizing situation for everyone involved. I've always liked Bogdanovich if for no other reason than he has suffered enough, intentionally or otherwise to make him a figure of deep humility which makes him instantly relatable. He's been wounded, self-destructive, bitter and resentful and always eventually turns a corner, taking responsibility and tried to mend the mistakes he's made. There's no pretentiousness with this guy. It's all out in the open for good or for ill. I find it hard to judge him without judging myself. Oh and then there's the fact that he's directed some of the greatest movies of all time.

Polly talked about the affair so matter of factly, that it came off as a partnership but flat of romance. I wonder if Dorothy and Paul would have taken responsibility for their roles in this sordid saga. Peter and Hugh did not seem to take responsibility for their roles in this tragic, needless act of domestic violence. For worse, all four played roles (exploitation, ambition, adultery, materialism, opportunism, objectification, cuckolding, sexual and psychological domination, lust, greed, projection, idealism, and denial). All elements of a three-act Greek tragedy. “There but for grace goes God.” Thank you for that.

    • @yeetnama9094
      @yeetnama9094 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Peter spent the rest of his life flogging himself for his sins and his role in her death.
I've read death of a Unicorn. He was very vocal about taking responsibility and was haunted by grief until the day he died.
HEFNER on the other hand DID NOT.
HEFNER was the one who REALLY hired Goldstein to stalk Dorothy and report back everything she was doing.
HEFNER raped that poor girl and git her killed because he was so jealous and vindictive about losing Dorothy to Peter and a better future career...as her playboy modeling contract was thankfully almost up and she was going to sign with Ford or William Morris.
Hefner saw Dorothy as his forever meal ticket and a way to "legitimize" his brand by having a playmate finally cross over into being a movie star.
Flippen creep. I hope he's burning in hell

Peter can say what he wants about Cher's acting talent. But Robert Altman directed her on Broadway to acclaim in "Come to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean." And they filmed it together, and it jumpstarted their careers again. Mike Nichols directed Cher in "Silkwood," and Norman Jewison directed Cher to an Oscar in "Moonstruck." All loved working with Cher and had greater resumes than Peter, I might add.
