I used to use a bunch of kicks and had trouble getting ones that work together, filtering/EQ is such a no-brainer. Resonances can also sound reeaaally nice, as long as they don't make the kick that's supposed to be strongest sound weaker in comparison. Amp and pitch ADSR too, just the simplest, quickest low-CPU-est things, no mixer required, will already do this job so well. I rarely have more than 2 unique kick samples to start with now, and usually just one. It's a great bonus that there's usually less work bogging down the creative flow. And if you do wanna get wacky, try resynthesis on the complimentary kick. Can also create a bass synth that just belongs with the kick this way, maybe try some rumbly noise thumps.
I agree with everything you've said here. I have to say ROUTING 1000%. For EDM, making smart bussing decisions makes a massive difference. You should also be gently clipping and limiting tracks and busses to 0 dB. It's a good move for tracks with prominent sounds or ones that you struggle with dynamically. For busses it's a must. You get the benefit of absolutely maximizing your headroom as well as knowing your channel faders represent the volume of your sounds PERFECTLY.
