- For his daughter's 16th birthday, Chris Lee bought a '99 Chevy and applied to Driveway Rescue to help get it ready to go and make sure it's safe and reliable. Mike and Pat hopped in the Nissan van full of RockAuto.com parts and headed out to see what they could do.
With Christin's help, they were able to get the brakes and shocks upgraded along with installing new belts, hoses and replacing fluids. This truck is good to go for lots of more safe miles!

Shiiit I work on my cars with my dad and he has to hold the flashlight and typically he gets it in my eyeball and I say dont fucking point it at me point it away and make it light a lamp. than I just take over on the light and holding 3 wrenches tightening down 20 bolts
I bought my dad a headlamp for fathers day so he wouldn't bother me about that. Best $30 I've spent.

@@huntersieling8011 could be the rear drumbrakes on european cars are a LOT smaller i have big hands and not a lot of feel for working blind , personally i dont like drukbrakes , diskbrakes are a lot eazier

Anytime I've bought a vehicle those are the first things that get replaced.
@Phil Mccrevasse never know what condition they are in. They could be carboned up and be original. It also gives you an idea if the engine is running rich or not
I always go ahead and replace my ball joints and wheel bearings along with the bushings and shocks so I don’t haft to worry about that for awhile
....Clutch fan , belt tensioner .
Could've done alot of things like a fuel filter oil change air filter and other tune up stuff

Probably best that there isn't one on there since she is a new driver and all. She can see behind the truck better when she's in reverse. Plus, better fuel mileage.

Distributor?
Distributor rotor?
Timing and timing chain?
Checking the ignition timing with a timing light?
I bet that truck is out in ignition timing after all those years.. save the poor girl some money is gas..
I really appreciate the whole idea that the mechanic actually teaches the owner of the vehicle how to do a proper repair job on their own vehicle
Had a 67 cougar that was given to me in high school by a friend, brother would guide me to fix, sold it to a local shop and had to watch it scream pass me as I walked to school. Worse is he totaled my dads 65 Catalina wagon. So many resentments over cars

Trust me it is. They are god damn near indestructible. I have had 2. First one i was t boned by a drunk driver and rolled the truck about 4 times. Walked away with cuts and bruises. 2nd i was rear ended by a smaller 4 door car at about 70 mph. They where on their phone. Car went under the truck and tore the rear axel completely off. I walked away fine and luckily the driver of the car survived. They are great trucks for sure

Shoulda done the intake gaskets as well when doing the cooling system and changed the Dexkill over to the green anifreeze.
i was thinking the something what about spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor, fresh oil and filter, new air filter
They should have done an EGR delete too
Flushed all the dexkill out when I changed my intake gaskets, ever had a problem again with gaskets

It's nice to see you guys helping someone in need of help get their truck back on the road. I was diagnosed with congestive heart failure 3 years ago and have been trying to get my '81 Silverado back on the road because the motor blew a year ago but haven't been financially capable but I'm determined I'll get it done by the end of the summer so I can finish the restoration . I'm not letting this disease stop me. Seeing this gave me the inspiration I've been needing

It looks alot like mi 1998 Silverado extend cab but mine is a 3/4 ton and is a long bed,when I first got it 6years ago I put new everything except for the a/c the a/c still works and haven't had a problem with,it's been an extremely reliable truck im never getting rid of it, soon it will become a classic and i can share it with mi grandkids 25, 30-40 years from now and keeping it about 98% original cus I still like little mods here and there as well like the one in the video nice wheels and tires tho
You forgot the most common failure on the vortec engine.. The dist cap, rotor, and coil wire. Girls going to be pissed the first time it rains and her badass Chevy wont start.....
I wish I could get help with my truck lol my dad is giving me a 2005 Chevy Colorado 2 we 4cyl it don’t have turn signals and needs tires and over head light doesn’t work and the brakes stick
I started helping my uncle when I was 4...30+ years ago. He worked on anything and everything and taught me along the way. I am now retired US Air Force where I was a mechanic and still work on the family vehicles. Good job!

Nice I am 16 years old and I am plan on getting a square body, my dad has an 84 k20 and it has a one ton rear end in it that came out of a tow truck that was also a square body that was around the year 86-87
You forgot to replace the thermostat while . New pump , new hose. Just forget one thing
Daniel Garcia yes thermostat & I would have got a replacement radiator just cause you changed everything else. No since get a leaking radiator down the road or a broken thermostat

You should change your attitude, and when you start collecting social security you are going to want everything handed to you. It’s human nature to want, the person in this show got lucky and received those parts and if you want the same to happen then start submitting yours in.

Yeah wtf. I love in Alaska and have to work my ass off in the mud lying on my back. Also why don’t they help kids who buy their own freaking cars. I hate seeing kids get cars from their parents. I have owned 4 cars all of which I’ve paid for (including insurance) and I’m not even 17 yet. I also have to work during the school year bc I pay everything down to buying my own clothes and paying my phone bill. They should help people who actually need it for sure

Should have coolant flushed out of the water pump after that rusty coolant!
It would have been smart to flush the cooling system really well before they replaced the water pump.
That truck needed tires more so than brakes and a water pump. 2:36 mark, that tire is shot.
Also, rock auto is cheap but the shipping....not so much.
Beats out Amazon Prime almost every time I check. My last order for front/rear brakes was $25 cheaper on Rockauto over Amazon Prime with shipping cost considered in.

Sam a ford mechanic said these trucks are reliable. And 15mpg isn’t bad for a truck. Mines and 86 f250 and I’m getting somewhere around 5mpg with a 351

They're just unsafe old junk at this point...she would have been better off in a car and borrowing her dad's truck when she needs it. Imo I would rather spend my money on something else than gas.

I deal strictly in Napa auto parts I’ve seen bad reviews on rock auto from several TH-cam videos and other online auto parts websites
rock auto might be a good place to buy parts unless your like me and own the most popular/sold el camino chevy ever made that being a 73 and you can't find shit for it anywere yet its suppose to be the most sold fucking one

I did the same thing to me. Bought a 2003 dodge Dakota 4x4 for my son and I......our adventure rig. Only had ot for a month and it broke down. My son and I were bummed out......more me because i feel like i goofed and let him down.

well, it needs a transmission, a dash since none of the gauges work, it needs upper a frames, and it has a small exhaust leak.
Such a memorable experience if only they taught basic maintenance when obtaining your drivers licence. So many times I’ve seen people put oil in there rad over flow or brake Fluid in there oil. Costly mistakes if taken to a stealership. Good job guys

I own a 94 chevy k1500 5.7L and I love how they look so when ever I see a truck like mine with a lift kit and rims I wanna do that to my truck. im hoping to put a 6inch lift kit and some rims and tires on it this summer.

Why do brake master fluid reservoirs have covers with snap latches ? Only seen this on American cars and nowhere else. Cars in the rest of the world always have a semi clear plastic reservoir for the brake fluid with a plastic screw cap.
