  • I have been wanting to buy a metal working lathe for quite some time now as I would like to make my own rings and tools so when i got the chance to buy this Hobbymat MD65 even tough it needed repaires i jumpede at the chance to own it. After having to make repaires to the lead screw I now have a Quality machine to learn and make on.
    Made originally in what used to be "East Germany", by VEB Prazisionsdrehmaschinen (now, Unitech) the Hobbymat MD65 Universal (as it was known in the UK) and BFE vertical milling attachment and stand-alone miller were also marketed in the USA as part of the Prazimat range - and in parts of Europe as the Saupe & Sohn, Proxxon, Kober and Alko.
    If you have one of these or a myford lathe and need spare parts please head over and visit heritage-lathes on ebay

    The Hobbymat (originally made in East Germany in the Soviet era) was a well made little lathe, and much better than most of the current Chinese mini lathes.

      I have one and I'm quite happy using it but it's a bit on the light end for the work I would like to do with it. The chucking capacity is nice if you are dealing with fine mechanics but isn't when you want to make tools. Advantages is that it's simple and reliable and easy to move and small lathe = small tools which are cheaper. It' can't do knurling as it lacks the rigidity and mass and a good QCTP is almost impossible to find our you have to remove the top carriage. I already replaced the single phase motor with a 3 phase one driven by a VFD and that involved some modification of the motor. Apart from that I'm in progress of adding an Electronic Leadscrew as I do find the gear changes quite annoying and I would like to have a fast forward/reverse as there is no means to move the apron then by turning the leadscrew. But if you are on a budget, this is an excellent tool.

      @@Compasscard " a good QCTP is almost impossible to find our you have to remove the top carriage. " Not so. The OXA size from Banggood and the like work perfectly. See the link for my lathe build above to see how well they fit.

    That looks fab, I have just bought one myself but it came with a lack of tools. I don't suppose you have a link/name to the guy you used to get your bits from?? Many thanks.

    Congrats. They are great little lathes. I have the Hobbymat standalone milling machine too.
    Tooling and accessories is what will cost you money. Some accessories are difficult to find for this lathe.
    Quick change tool post makes using the lathe much less frustrating to use.

      Is there a common quick change tool post that could be modded to work with the lathe?

      @@WebbedToedWorkbenchI have been looking also into this matter but so far the only one that seems useable is the one home built by bazmonaut. He also created a steady for it as these accessories are unobtanium

    I have one of these I need to do a bit of a refurb on. It looks like someone's tried to make a variable speed mod and it needs a bit of wiring work as well as a general clean-up. Very cool little machine though! I also have the BF65 milling head. A four-jaw chuck and quick-change toolpost are the big things to find for it.

    Bought one of those second-hand years ago, when I knew sod all about lathes, and it was brilliant. Unfortunately, the centrifugal starter assembly in the motor destroyed itself, and knowing very little, was unable to find a replacement motor, so replaced the entire lathe with a similar sized Axminster, and gave the Hobbymat to a colleague. Big mistake, and regretted it ever since, until I recently bought a Proxxon PD400, which looks like a modern version of the Hobbymat, and could well be a source for replacement parts.

    • @TheBeardx16
      @TheBeardx16  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats really cool, There where a few companies like Proxxon that got hold of this model and renamed for their own customers. The only difference with the Proxxon SD300 is the colour.
