A-ha! I See What Harry Styles Is Doing...

  • Are the sounds of The 80s making a comeback?! "As It Was" is the new single by the world's current pop hero Harry Styles. Here, I'm reacting to it as I as go and I think I've realised exactly why this song is currently so popular. It reminds me of another song that might be one of the greatest pop hits ever made. What do you think? What makes that 80s classic great and this song just...good? Is there something missing? Or am I being too harsh on Harry? Or am I being too kind?! Tell me, please, tell me.

      It's probably best not to admit you were involved, no matter how distantly, in x factor.
      BTW, maybe you're too young to remember, way back in the 1960's there was a show called Opportunity Knocks, those cunts, cowell and lythgoe, 'borrowed' that idea, lock-stock-and-barrel, and made themselves very rich off an easliy pleased tv audience.

Still one of my fondest memories ever. Justin, if you’re reading this, I just wanted to say thank you so much. I still tell people that story often. pondering in the tub.. not surprisingly a bath man... so genius, it might have been scripted... we have also seen lingering thoughts on the train... maybe talk running is or will be in the mix (like the running reviewer he covered) .... when thoughts come.. very much a thinking, travelling, talking, bath man.... i am realizing that if Justin Hawkins created a narrative for bathtub spoken monologue... I'd by it ....(some of the existing tracks are more shower aligned) ... it is great that he understands that there is an audience for his conversation .. compelling commentary

    The first song I heard with that A-Ha drum beat and Synth melody was Blinding Lights then it seemed to be copied by Justin Bieber with Stay and then I heard Ed Sheeran do Shivers and Harry Styles releases As It Was, It surprises me that these pop stars could be so obvious with almost copying eachothers singles and it not worry them that it's seems really inauthentic, they all sound very similar to me.

    • @peterhillman8282
      @peterhillman8282 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yeah. It was "almost" artistically valid (factoring in a big slab of amnesia) when Blinding Lights came out, because it's a great tune. But when they all do an A-Ha track? Yawn. Why not just listen to Take On Me? It's better and will always be. Not many derivatives beat the original.

    A-ha have a ton of fantastic songs. Take on Me is but one of them: Manhattan Skyline, Summer Moved On, Angel in the Snow, Out of Blue Comes Green, Analogue, Sun Always Shines on TV, Under the Makeup, and just way to many to mention spanning a few different genes actually. They are magnitudes of brilliance above those that use them as an influence . . . And that's with acknowledging Style's is a decent effort, ditto the Weeknd's Blinding Lights too.

Harry's came first if anyone was wondering. There are also mashups of Taylor Swift's Style and One Direction's Perfect, some great and some not so great. Harry is known for his influences from the past and if he does borrow a portion or if the influence is really strong he does credit them as writers. He's not stealing he's paying homage and directing his fans to their music.

    Thank you for the incredible musical insights Justin. Nobody seems to be discussing the lyrics, which resonated with me after the last few years.
    I get the feeling that Harry Styles is following the Taylor Swift model of singer-songwriting: essentially writing a poem, and then finding top notch musicians and producers to make that poem as accessible to people as possible. I enjoy that kind of music as vehicle approach, maybe because I'm better at words than tunes myself. But you're right that the music itself won't last. Not sure if the lyrical ideas will, but they certainly connect with a lot of people in the moment.

    I never imagined that I'd end up liking Harry Styles' music, not really into boy bands....but I actually really like some of his solo stuff.....it'll be interesting to see what he's doing in 10 years' time...
    That opening to HS' song does sound just like Take On Me...it's OK but not a career high all time great for HS, IMO..
    But surely it was ever thus? Led Zep lifted stuff left, right and centre...doesn't stop them being one of the greatest rock bands ever...

      I really don’t think he’s copping too hard on the A-Ha song. He’s not the first.
      It’s just puffy pop, that sounds like many other recent pop acts. It’s not my thing to begin with, but I have nothing against Harry Styles.

    When I first heard the song, I immediately thought it sounded like The Strokes. A-ha didn't really come to me because Take On Me is definitely more nuanced.
    Whereas this song feels as though it's been taken straight out of The New Abnormal, the new album by The Strokes.

    Well, being that every single time that I've heard this song playing at a gas pump - approximately five hundred and twenty three times, give or take a hundred and ten - I thought that it was Coldplay all of this time.
    Listening to it now, I immediately looked at my gas tank gauge out of some form of Rasputin-like mental conditioning.
    So, this channel has once again proven its worth. (Ha)

    Saw another comment further down, but I agree with the idea that Harry Styles will be remembered first and foremost as a performer.
    The songs are fun and I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with a pop artist simply making fun catchy music you can dance to with your friends. Does he reference his influences a bit too clearly? Maybe. But I don't mind listening to a track like Grapejuice and feeling that early solo McCartney vibe, or Canyon Moon with the Joni feel, or Kiwi's classic guitar-driven rock sound. I do think he puts enough of himself and modern flavor into them to keep it more interesting and away from being simple pastiche.
    But really I think where he does set himself apart is on stage - watching the way he brings a crowd to life and the energy he gives a performance (not to mention the killer musicians he surrounds himself with on stage and the more dynamic live musical arrangements) - I think that'll be his true legacy.
    (also some of the comments on here are just rancid. Attacking and belittling people for liking a musician and sharing their feelings about them? How pretentious and sad must you be)

    U2's 'New Year's Day' had formed in a similar way, when they were having a jam of the Visage song 'Fade To Grey' and bassist Adam Clayton accidentally mixed up the chord sequence; Pretty awesome 'mistake', I reckon! 😄

    Great channel I watch every day. I am also a new The Darkness fan because of this channel. I find this kind of analysis borderlines on pretentiousness. In all of your albums I hear things that remind me of Queen or AC/DC , sometime just a little bit and sometimes like a sledgehammer. It's all still good , but not always great. I'm just trying to get a feel for where you're coming from with these critiques. You had similar things to say about one of Slash' s new songs a few weeks ago."Just not good enough", type of thing.

    I have loved As It Was this year. It has been one that I put on to cheer me up. Now, as you asked, will it be good 40 years from now? Only time will tell. There are pop songs that I loved 10 and 20 years ago and no longer do, and ones that I still love.

  • @lovecats64

    It’s a bit of a trend at the moment to use the A-Ha aesthetic and I think you hit the nail in the head when you said it’s like they mathematically extracted what makes a great pop melody. You see the same thing in Dua Lipas Physical and of course Blinding Lights by the Weeknd. I always thought the production of all of these is very reminiscent of Johnny and Mary by Robert Palmer. Either way I really like the song! (I have no musical talent, just ears 😊)

    • @ed8311
      @ed8311 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is actually been a «trend» ever since a-ha came out. Coldplay says they were one of their biggest inspirations. A-ha, massively underrated for the influence they have on music industry as a whole.
