- Professional Farrier, Darren Owen, ran into a false sole while out in the field. A false sole is the build-up of overgrown dead sole that is in the process of exfoliating. It is more common in the summer but can often happen in the winter. It is also a sign that the horse’s hooves have not been trimmed routinely. A false sole can affect hoof quality if not taken care of, leading to other hoof issues, such as abscesses.
It is important to maintain a regular farrier schedule year-round to help avoid hoof issues like this. Maintaining a regular farrier schedule also allows the farrier to address any issues before they become a big problem. If your horse develops a hoof-related issue, call your farrier or veterinarian as soon as possible.

I had to come back and say missed Darren at the Northwest Horse Expo in Albany, OR. this year! Was disappointed Life Data Labs wasn’t there. But maybe next year!
Hey Darren- I think you just solved my mystery! My boy gets regular trims, feet are healthy but he gets false soles and 2 weeks ago came up lame, bad enough he wouldn’t walk across the pasture, he hollered at me and I had to go get him. (He’s Arab and dramatic) Took him to the vet, because his symptoms were more like he did something to his leg. X-rays showed a large abscess. I did a combo of soaking and poulticing and it finally erupted. Still soaked after eruption because they can come back. So yes! False soles are a problem causer!
