I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a hundred times, Simon deserves better friends.
The “you can breathe now “ speech is always going to make me cry. Every single time.
It’s explained in the book but the name Jacques comes from the French version of Simon Says which is called Jacques a dit.
I absolutely love this movie, but it also breaks my heart because some of us won’t get to have that experience with supportive friends and family, so we stay in the closet and hiding who we are because we know what will happen, and we have to live vicariously through media like this.
This movie is so good. One of the best LGBTQ romance films by far.
The entire conversation between Simon and his mother was actually improvised by Jennifer Garner in the moment. It still makes me cry whenever I watch that scene. That is what every persons child should hear whenever they’re ready to come out. Hopefully one day needing to come out will become unnecessary.
The speech of Simon's mum is definitely my favorite moment of this movie. The image of him "holding his breath" combined with the fact that "he finally gets to exhale" is by far the most direct and beautiful metaphor of a gay guy before and after his coming out process. Regardless of the rest of the movie, that scene made me think this is one of the best movies i have ever seen on this topic!!!! 😛😇❤🧡💛💚💙💜
I watched this with one of my best friend's at the time the film came out in cinemas. As a closeted teenager that had discovered that I was gay, this film definitely helped me a lot. It made a lot of the struggles feel a lot more normal when you see it on a big screen film rather than just forums on the internet haha.
The idea that you feel like you don't fit into this new community that you're a part of in how you dress or act, the way you're guessing if people know or you've told the right people. Seeing it all unfold definitely makes you feel a little less alone.
All of these problems seem small and miles away looking through the backwards lens but I know how much it meant at the time so this film definitely holds importance for me. Just really nice to have a funny, charming film that has a happy ending and gave a lot of people hope!
Would definitely recommend the spin off Love, Victor if you have time because it shows the other side of a less (comparatively) straightforward journey that can't just be condensed into a romcom film.

I always thought Simon’s friends were a little selfish about the whole thing. Yes, Simon should not have lied and Abby definitely has the right to be angry the whole situation. But they never really considered the position Simon was put it. How he was absolutely terrified of being outed to everyone, and how the whole thing really is Martin’s fault. Instead they just abandon him and don’t even try to talk to him or understand his position until after he writes the public apology. Especially after those jerks embarrassed Simon in the cafeteria, I would’ve felt a little better if they had the others go to talk to Simon and maybe apologize sooner. Being outed is a really serious thing, especially at such a young age. The way it’s written, I worry it sends the message that Simon’s safety and comfort was not important enough for the others to understand why he did what felt he had to to protect his secret.
I just commented about this! haha Simon’s friends were definitely written poorly in this movie and that’s my only real gripe about it. otherwise, I loved it!
Abby definitely has a right to be angry. Especially since Simon already came out to her, and still didn't tell her the truth. But others were overreacting.
@@kavtoM I think Simon should've told her about the blackmailing when he came out so she could help him navigate the situation without all that drama, but it makes sense he didn't
the most relatable thing about this movie is how Simon thinks every guy is Blue. like, as a bi person, I’ve been in the situation where every person that’s nice to me I think is hitting on me lol btw, I was never upset with Simon about how he handled the blackmail situation. I think his friends overreacted and should have been more understanding about the situation he was put in. the dangers of being outed as a teen is one of the scariest things that can happen and I love Simon’s outburst to Martin about being outed. it makes the way his friends treated him after they found out about the blackmail that much more heartbreaking for me. anyway, thanks for the reaction Eric. love this movie! the feels 🥺. i dunno why i thought you'd already seen this. Bram and Simon are adorable. it's so funny watching this in a post Heart Stopper world because this movie got so much hate for being to cute and fluffy when that's what Heart Stopper is praised for. I hope you can eventually get around to reacting to the follow up series, Love Victor, at least the first season, it's set in the same universe and follows a Latino boy who is inspired by Simon's story.
One of my favorite films to revisit every now and then for it’s unique wit, heart and characters. Martin was a TOTAL a-hole and was THE very least he could do by paying for that final ride on the ferris wheel. I’m glad to have seen this multiple times in theaters and hearing murmurs of kids coming out to their parents and friends. Hollywood still has ways to go to further more queer leading films. My favorite bit was that what-if scenario of having the straight kids come out as straight to their parents 🤣. If only bigotry, bullying, homophobia/transphobia were a thing of the past.
Jennifer Garner’s speech about wanting Simon to breathe again gets me every time. It’s what queer people always want to hear from close people when they come out.
The book is a little better, as I don’t think the friends are as mean after Simon was outed.
I would recommend watching the movies But I'm A Cheerleader and Boy Erased. Both are about conversation therapy but come at it from different ways. But I'm A Cheerleader is more of a satirical take and Boy Erased is a much more serious and darker take. Boy Erased is based on a book written by the author's personal experience being put in one of those facilities.

Is a really really a good movie ❤ and the series later love victor also, Simon is sometimes in the serie and his Dad😊 and have you seen the first minutes of heartstopper season 2 episode 1...its so lovely 😁
This was a very emotional movie when it came out as it was the first big Hollywood film focused on gay romance. It was amazing seeing this level of representation in a mainstream movie and felt very relatable.
I hate how Martin was written for the movie. They made him a caricature. He wasn't this embarrassing or annoying in the book. He was charming to the point that Simon sometimes would forget the blackmail when they were hanging out. He even thought Martin might be Blue at one point. And they were civil to each other after everything.
Hated the ferris wheel scene too. It was a private moment in the book. Not a spectacle for the whole school.
It was a different experience for me, because I read the book. I knew they were probably tricking the audience with Bram being caught with that girl,but a part of me was wondering if it was meant to throw off the book readers as well. In which case that scene is a master stroke so as make everyone question the intentions of the film. I almost wondered if they were just gonna change who Blue was
Please don't take this the wrong way, but seeing a straight guy crying over a gay movie is so... beautiful!
I really recommend reading the book for this one, it's called "Simon vs the Homosapien's Agenda". As much as I love this movie, they took a lot of liberties and the book is amazing

I read the book so the movie was really sweet. I don't Love the movie but again its nice. Especially as a starter queer movie. For something more intense I'd always recommend The Handmaiden 😊
I dont get why holywood keep pushing lgbtq down our throats, it completly unessicary and its get annoying but what i find most disturbing is that putting in cartoons for childern, i think that talk about sexuality shouldnt be untill there old enough to understand
i have nothing wrong with someone who is gay or lesbain but just keep that to yourself, your family and close friends

I think when you compare how many people are not straight in real life to how many lgbt people are in movies, it's pretty underrepresented and not pushed down anyone's throat at all. You wouldn't call the Titanic "hollywood pushing straightness down our throats". This was literally just a romance movie but with 2 men. It wasn't even remotely sexual. They kissed at the end, that's is. You can't say "i have nothing wrong with someone who is gay or lesbain" and then call a movie like this pushy, annoying, inappropriate, indoctrinating to children etc, it doesn't make sense
@@brendangatenby8066 Children have never been allowed to just be children. I grew up in rural Florida 1k pop town with no internet. If you grew up gay you'd understand that everyone around you assumes and expects you to be straight. You can't relate to it and obviously have never tried to imagine being in someone else's shoes
1. It doesnt matter if they are "underepsented", "pride" shouldnt be media at all simple as
2.nobody "Pushing straightness", because alot of the world is straight and we dont go around every june shouting "im straight and proud"
3. Dosent matter if just a gay kiss , a gay couple in a childen show or movie eg buzz lightyear it shouldnt shown what so ever it still innapropiate because your still implanting stuff in there head thy shouldnt learn about till much later (im talking both sexualities)
4. to.clarify my point about i.dont anything against people who.are lesbain or gay judt keep it yourself and people you know eg parents friends etc and dont go parading at pride events, opening declaring your sexuality to everyone
