@F.R. F i can see both sides of this debate. Sean Penn won an Oscar for portraying Harvey Milk, bc Sean Penn seems like a surly guy irl. It's the reason why ppl loved Brokeback-two gay men, who weren't flamboyant. Not all gays are. If Porter played against type, say..a Malcolm X, *and pulled it off* , he, too, would have an Oscar by now. That's what acting is about.
ON THE OTHER HAND, his refusal* to accept straight roles, (which he said he did, as recently as a few days ago-so i'm not sure what he means here) allowed him to play Pray & represent gay, *Black, irl, flamboyant, ppl* , finally. Would you rather see an actor pretend to have Down's Syndrome, or an actress with Down's play a character with Down's??💗
Mr. Porter is an accomplished actor, it's but NOW the world's lense is capitalizing on Queer Culture and Mr. Porter in his successful show POSE is at the forefront.
He's been on Broadway, released at least one or two albums, he isn't new to any of this.

I’d like to see him play a sad widower with a child between the ages 8 and 11. I don’t want the gender of his character’s dead spouse specified but just the sorrow his character exudes from losing the person he loved. His kid keeps trying to get him to be hopeful. He won’t be hopeful. Also, he is a veterinarian. One day, he rescues the biggest parrot he’s ever seen. The parrot and his child give him hope.

Well GOD is just what society made to put downed people. Like how virginity puts down women or how men can’t be vulnerable without being called gay. Now you know what’s the worst religion than all the other religions is Christian because they can’t respect other people beliefs from their culture but the people from other cultures respect YOU’RE culture. I’ve said too much culture it probably doesn’t make sense to you or I’m talking to the wrong comment. Oh well. Sure believe in God but don’t take it so far that you threaten people and make life decisions choices for them just because you think it’s good for them when actually you’re just making them miserable. Furthermore, there is an interview on Vladtv with an actor/comedian (i think Godfrey) and he talks about how straight actors should turn down gay roles because they are befitting for people who are already gay. They don't have to be taught how act gay because it is who they are. I totally agree. There are plenty of talented gay men like BP, so why even try to find someone gay to play that.

That Hollywood Reporter roundtable was edited badly in general. Billy clearly didn't know about Rocketman just as I'm sure he didn't (and probably still doesn't) know that Richard's currently dating a guy anyways, but THR were the ones trying to scandalize it, not Billy.

Gays play straight roles in movies and TV shows all the time. Black straight men usually get talked down upon for playing gay or wearing a dress. An actors job is to act. Let them do it. What about all of the closeted gay actors (there’s a lot), that get straight roles. Just because they aren’t out publicly, should that still make a difference? An actor is cast because of the audition, it doesn’t state their sexuality on the form.

dru bru I don’t understand what black actors go through. But I am gay. Overtly, with feminine mannerisms much like him. But I’m realistic, an actors job is to act. Do you think he could convincingly portray a character with romantic or lustful feelings towards a woman? Or if only gay people can play gay roles, that completely goes against an actors job. Being gay isn’t always a “physical” thing, and is much less important than a role written for a black person. As long as a gay person is represented on screen in a respectful way, I don’t care in the slightest if that actor is gay or straight.

You’re absolutely missing the point. He’s saying that he can’t even be seen for roles that aren’t a flamboyant gay black man because people automatically assume he can’t play other roles. I think the point was that it doesn’t happen that way for other actors especially straight actors when it comes to gay roles. No one says “oh we don’t even see this actor because he’s straight and we can’t see him playing gay”

Exactly. Yeah, let's break down what roles he's really talking about wanting to play. He gonna play a physically disabled person? I wanna see him walk his walk IF he auditions for these roles. Last I heard most actors have to audition and are rarely "offered" or "handed" roles.

@@patriciorodriguez1020 He's not an A- lister, not even a B-lister...the VAST majority or actors don't get handed roles. We're talking the top 1% (if that) of actors who are CELEBRITIES...who are rich and can afford it if they aren't constantly hustling for roles...that is not common.
The man isn't even young, which the industry is obsessed with. Maybe if he was a few years younger and not as well known, but he basically screwed himself with these interviews.

The problem with what he is saying is that you need to be exactly like the character you're going to be playing already which isn't acting its emoting. If he was able to act he could get any role and change his demeanour, accent, mannerisms and posture to fit the character that he is going to be playing. But he wants to take all the black gay roles because he is a black gay man?
Heath Ledger was great in Brokeback mountain playing a gay cowboy while being a straight actor and Luke Evans was great playing the straight Gaston character in the remake of beauty and the beast while being an openly gay actor. It's got nothing to do with what you are as a person but how authentic you can portray a character which is literally called 'acting'.
You totally missed it. He's not saying that he wants all the black gay parts. What he is saying is that because he's not naturally masculine, there is this belief that he couldn't play anything but gay and flamboyant parts but it doesn't work the other way around. If you're straight, masculine, and white in the acting world, you get carte blanche when it comes to parts. There are more options because the directors have a limited sense of perspective. How many straight actors have played gay? Many, because to the directors if the man is naturally masculine, he's already assumed to be able to be a chameleon but it is not the same for an actor who may be deemed feminine. That's what he's talking about.

It's called letting go of BILLY PORTER, his ego, to inhabit the role. The character itself is what's more important. Something I don't think he's capable of doing. It's not all about emoting.
And that is like saying actors like Neil Patrick Harris, Jim Parsons, and Sarah Paulson should not be allowed to play straight characters because they are gay in real life.
He is not a spring chicken. Imma keep saying it. He needs to dust off his audition hat...remember what that is BP? Because that's about the only way you're gonna change the industry's perception of you, not by waiting to get offered roles.
