I like to think this entire plot was written because Jerry and Larry met this actor and went, "huh..."
More likely Larry thought it up and they found an actor that fit the bill.
@@johncasoni4379 Yeah, probably. This is just a "wouldn't it be funny" thought. But scenarios that ridiculous have happened in the entertainment industry. Niles in Frasier was literally invented as a character just because he looks like Kelsey Grammer.
I generally assume that every awkward social encounter on the show is something that really happened to Larry David. Even the ones not involving George. The AIDS ribbon? I’ll bet that happened to Larry David. The pony remark? DEFINITELY happened to Larry David.
Oh man. If they made a curb episode with this premise it would be even better. 😂
Bro, same as the episode where george say his co worker looks like Sugar Ray Leonard. Larry david remarked that Tom Wright, the actor looked like sugar ray. At least that's what Wikipedia says. You are more right than you would believe I think.
"I'll give you a couple minutes to decide." Best line of this episode!
Yeah, lol. I also thought them basically saying fuck it, let's just go to the GAP then to end it was hilarious.
Yeh the minor supporting characters rarely got the good lines but that waitress got the laugh line and she nailed it. Best minor supporting performance with only one line I saw in this series.
Clever waitress line. She did he job of taking the order, and being aware of the situation
“So...we’re just a...couple of white people?” Hahahaha the way he says that always cracks me up
"So we're just a couple of white people....."
"Want to go to the Gap?"
LOL
An American clothing store chain that was in indoor shopping malls, before being indoors was mostly banned. They sell middle of the road, kind of stylish, but not too trendy or flashy clothes. Kind of generic, slightly upscale, middle class to upper middle class, boring white people clothing
Thanks, I think I understand now. So there’s a difference between the clothes that whitefellas and blackfellas buy? That’s interesting.
Why is being indoors banned in America?
@@johnmoyle4195 Because we could spread a virus to someone. But, yes, there's stereotypical differences in clothing between racial and ethnic groups that don't hold true in all circumstances.
Lol I love the fact that Elaine never claims them as her friends infront of other people
She calls George her "good friend" to her coworker in the Little Kicks episode, but it was funny how here she just refers to them as "some people I know."
“Yo, yo, turn that down” 😂😂😂
Having a black boyfriend enables her to call the waitress "sister." LOL
And ethnicity apparently gives people a “right” to use family denotions as slang? Not black? Better not say “sister” 👌 Either all ok or none of it, anyone who disagrees can just go bitch and whine elsewhere as the rest of us could care less 👍 (though most self respecting people in intelligent conversations wouldn’t use pointless slang denotions anyways regardless of their race)
"Ill give you a couple minutes to decide"
Thats a bloody brilliant line lol
@Dander Spat Except "Hispanic" is not a race. And Spanish restaurants better be aptly named and serve food from Spain. Not from some Latin American country (I know many of these countries' cultures were influenced by Spain). But let's not confuse terms.
Seinfeld is the masterpiece of low key jokes. They were able to make lots of jokes about sensitive issues like race, religion, gender, mental illness, death, Nazis, animal cruelty, abuse, and many other things that wouldn't be acceptable today.
"Why would you take me to a Spanish restaurant because I'm black?"
LOLOL
...i'm black--hell take me to a spanish restaurant NOW. mango margarita please.
"YO YO TURN IT DOWN!"
I love how he tried to "bass" up his voice a tiny bit for that line. Awesome.
"its okay my boyfriend's black" i never cringed so hard. Seinfeld was way ahead of its time
Cringe so hard ? Way ahead of its time ? Can you be any more of a Millennial ?
You could never make that joke today. Millennials would get deeply offended and start a social media movement with a hashtag.
No, it wasn't. That joke/meme has existed since before Seinfeld was even born.
Gonna start introducing family & friends as “people I know”.
The guy's performance is perfect. Julia's, too, as always.
It's not much of a performance when you play the same character over and over again.
"these are...people I know..." LOL
"We got out years ago for obvious reasons, you know how it is" clever joke
@@strateeg32 lots of White South Africans left after apartheid ended in 1994
@@thepants1450 Hardly, Have you not seen the state of South Africa at the moment?
@@WrenchedAdvice It's a complicated issue. The blacks were repressed, but when the whites were kicked out, the blacks suffered more.
Larry and Jerry knew exactly how to skirt around an issue, make you think one way, then at the end, realize they are making fun of us all.
This comment deserves a lot more attention here, you basically described Seinfeld in a nutshell. Love it 😄
This show was, is, and will continue to be great.
This aged so well!
Why would you take me to a Spanish restaurant because I'm black?
@@ky4864 well, on her defense, Hispanic is like in the middle of every race, black, white, Asian, etc, and as a Hispanic i am very happy that even in my own family we have a little bit of everything, I am light brown, 2 of my brothers and a sister are white, one of my sisters looks Asian, and others look black
@@alvilla701 isn’t Hispanic an ethnicity, not a race? Like you said, people who are white/black/Asian can all be Hispanic. That’s what confused me in the last scene
Every line of this is perfectly delivered, Seinfeld had such great acting.
Reading the comments I'm surprised no one mentioned the South Africa part, I think that was the funniest bit.
i just realized egypt is in africa. so it makes since he said south africa
What bothers me is....he made the remark about leaving South Africa vague. Were the whites leaving too from the apartheid?
Yes, a lot of whites fled South Africa after apartheid due to fear of revenge/reprisal by the new majority government, so it could go either way. Either he's Black and his family left due to apartheid, or he's white and they left as apartheid was ending
"Not that there's anything wrong that"
"Do you want to have sex right now, DO YOU WANT TO HAVE SEX RIGHT NOW??! *LET'S GO BABY!!* "
Daryl is the most late-1990s-looking dude ever
He looks like he could’ve been a stand-in or body double for Hayden Christensen.
Their disappointment when they reconcile the fact that they're simply a "couple of white people" 😂 😂 🤣
It was genius the way the writers used little clues that seemed to be spot on, but turned out to steer her in the wrong direction thus keeping the race of the boyfriend vague.
There is nothing vague about him he is white he looked white especially his hair. Its just like him mistaking Elaine for being hispanic, no one would think she is hispanic just because of her last name. They are making fun of stereotypes associated with race such as blacks into rap music & whites shopping at The Gap .
This bit is insanely clever, all the way from the top to bottom. This here is why this show is No1.
The way Elaine says “maybe” kills me lol
Elaine does in fact look Spanish in this season, whereas she looked white in the earlier seasons.
Elaine has features that enable her to pass as various ethnic races. hell, there was that one episode when they go to India, and Elaine in the cultural clothing, makeup, hair and accessories really made her look legit Indian.
"look Spanish"? If you think there is only one Spanish type and one Indian type, you need to educate yourself. Do you think you might attach too much value to the outside of a person? Handy for you to stick a label on them!
Okay, I should clarify that I meant she looked like the standard Spaniard and standard Indian, or at least had a close enough resemblance.
ethnicities having a general look isn't the same as the m all looking the same, champ
Yeah, I know what you're all saying, but still, ethnic groups tend to have an average appearance. This is why we can distinguish a Taiwanese from a Nigerian.
Iberians, for example, tend to have dark hair and brown/hazel eyes with olive complexion. They can certainly vary, but that's the average.
I love the writing in this episode. It goes from something like the music making elaine assume hes black, to the fact that he says he hates it. Then he bangs on the wall loudly saying YO YO turn it down, and then elaines like wait maybe he is black again lol. Then she asks about the cultural significance of the designs and he says African making her feel for sure he is black. Then finally he says South African which could imply hes just a regular South African white dude!! Thats fucking hilarious.
Late comment, but also if you see he said they "got out for obvious reasons" from SA referring to either apartheid racism if he was black, or... Not... If he was white 🤣
It's to show the audience how deep rooted racism is in the mind of white people. How elaine instead of going with the flow like one would in any dating relationship. Like a white guy doesn't go yo,yo...yo! In the f'n heart of New York? Thus it did matter and to pretend like it didn't. To make a long comment short. The writers (imho) were saying a certain class of people are not genuine.
Didn’t know they made an episode of Elaine dating Sean King
"These are ... people I know." LOL
How's this for weird ass coincidence? As I'm watching this video, I get a notification from Netflix telling me about their new Rachel Dolezal documentary!!
Funny when you hear of people afraid, the government is going to injecting a chip in them to track everything they do, not realizing that everything they do is already tracked.
give it to Seinfeld to make a story about that
This was the only thing that ever captured my life succinctly. Thanks, Jerry.
"So, you want to go the GAP?"
I'm dead
I love how George is "should we be talking about this"?
My wife's friend briefly dated the actor who played the vague boyfriend. She never thought to ask him which he really was!
I though she was robbing the cradle
I'm sorry but this was hilarious. I'm brown, but my youngest brother is just like this guy and people always wonder.
crysjumar1 oh ok I just keep seeing weird comments people afraid to laugh “is this racist?”. Shits weird to me this wasn’t racist at all
@@VashTheStampFiend could be racist but i don't give a shit. I was more concerned about the joke structure. lol
@@VashTheStampFiend It's just a bit of insecurity. Many people think just talking about race is a form of racism, even if that isn't the case at all.
"That's not irish" Always cracks me up 😂😂
"Wanna go to the Gap?" Too funny.
Only old Seinfeld episodes can pull off this kind of subject. This would never have made it to screen nowadays!
When you’re honest it’s timeless, just like this show
No one addresses generalisations, simple day to day life's weird, surreal, and embarrassing situations like Seinfeld ‼️Absolutely brilliant 👍🏾 👍🏾 👍🏾 👍🏾 👍🏾 👍🏾
God I love her reaction at 1:01 Elaine kicks ass lol
I love that they were both disappointed. 😂
Interesting fact Darryl played by Samuel Bliss Cooper now goes by Sammy Bliss and is a DJ and events manager
I like how Elaine finally feels validated to say "I hear that, sister," but still sounds so uncomfortable actually using it. nice acting
To be honest I initially thought that Elaine was hispanic too.
“Why would you take me to Spanish restaurant if I’m black” best line!!
This entire episode is hilarious, they all are, but one of the best scenes is when she had him fill out the warranty to cleverly find out what his race actually is!!
"Wanna go to the gap?" 😂😂😂
I will say this was genuinely funny. Not a lot of laugh tracks and I was still laughing.
I knew I wasnt the only one thinking Logic ...😂
“You know how it is”
“Maaybe...”
"I'll give you a couple of minutes to decide"......layers.
This show can make any conversation comedy gold! I love this show!
Listening to a conversation in Seinfeld is like watching people pass a ball around.
This episode in 2019 would have gotten the show cancelled.

There's definitely something about his facial features, and he looks like many light-skinned Louisiana Creoles do. I like how well they cast him, because it makes the whole plotline believable.
@@andromedastar4900 It's like the actor from the show _Prison Break_ Wentworth Miller. I didn't notice it at first, but he is partly black.

This is pure Larry David! I don’t even know if he wrote the episode, but that whole awkward scene with the waitress at the end was priceless, haha! Certain people ARE like this, though, which is what makes it so funny. Little has changed since this first aired, either.

I was screaming at her: "Eeeeeelejn, Eeeelejn, he is white"
But she couldn't hear me.
YO YO, TURN IT DOWN
Elaine got the best plot lines and they usually meant more/were better commentary on the real world
George: _Should we be talking about this?_
...
Elaine: _I don't think we should be talking about this._
“you know how it is”
“...maybe”
Between the two, Elaine is the more ethnically ambiguous one.
When I was a kid, it made perfect sense to me why she would take him to a Spanish restaurant if he’s black. I wish I could go back in time and ask myself why that made sense
Erm...Spanish...the Moors lived there... The Moors were kinda considered African... Ha, no idea. And of course, I meant The Moops.
The name Nelson is an Irish baby name. In Irish the meaning of the name Nelson is: Son of the Champion. Famous Bearer: South African President Nelson Mandela (born 1918). George was right.
Im sitting here laughing at his vagueness for real 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Jerry plays mind games with Elaine all the time! much more with her boyfriends
Only Seinfeld would do something like this. The best sitcom of all time.
I love this show!
This is Gold! Pure Gold!
This is all Jerry's fault with the assumption he is a Black man. The disappointment with each other, to founding out they are both white is hilarious.
Darryl looks like he's 19
Elaine: Heres an interesting column, Race. Darryl: Isnt that optional? Elaine: It certainly should be! But they would really like know.........
He definitely doesn't look Irish.
@Henk de Tank Yeah I know all about that term, but just like you said it needs to be googled, it isn't common knowledge
If you play this on tv today you get called: racist, black face, xenophobic , white supremacist, elitist, etc...
This is what you call epic
His name is Sammy Bliss. I would say his father looks biracial. Hes probably around 10 % Black
